December 2011! Nearly done with that year.
Thank you for the comment!
I admit, I realized after I wrote it that they could’ve just prototyped with the robotic worm heads in the first place and never done a second prototyping (like the trolls didn’t). They did bring dwellings, though, the egg/cork/apple/etc. bases, which counted as “houses” for the game.
WV started a revolution once and it got everyone slaughtered. The Prospitians had already long accepted their initial defeat; “Black always wins,” and all. I’d like to think that as beings initiated as fully-grown game constructs, they simply lack the willpower needed to overcome their basic “instincts” to comply with the inevitable. Sburb and paradox space seem overly concerned with fate. In the same line of thought, I figure being prototyped overrides parts of one’s personality to make you comply with your new NPC-ish role, like how Nanna is aggravatingly coy, Davesprite says he’s programmed/compelled to package info in riddles, and Jaspers is sort of dumbly confused, etc.
Although how different the ___sprites REALLY are, I never really said; maybe AR didn’t really do much in the fight against BQ/BK, or maybe prototyping him a second time was necessary to make him function as needed. Serenitysprite only temporarily upset WV before he accepted her again.
As for creating the new battlefield and exiles… it is possible or even probable their own exiles already existed and that not playing the game would just doom them to a non-alpha timeline. It’s another, “it’s basically inevitable” sort of thing to them. And hopefully their own future exiles would rebuild civilization (like Spades on Alternia’s moon) as they themselves had failed to do.
I mean, playing the game for anyone means exiling and killing unknown numbers of people to create a paradise for themselves only, whether the players are human or whatever. But these exiles transcended being mere game constructs to become the players; like if your chess pieces suddenly jumped off the board and started playing chess too. They could’ve refused to play, but that would instead doom the unknown numbers of people to never existing in the first place, anyway. Is it better to cause death, or to prevent life?
I just stuck with giving them their own duplicates as exiles because… that’s what Sburb uses: carapacians. They could’ve gotten Midnight Crew variants, sure, and that would have been interesting as well, but I didn’t want to focus as much on their relationship with their alternate selves (who are both doomed to exile, and blessed with the chance to rebuild), more on their struggles with their ascendance into the roles of players. They’re given a smidgen more power over fate, but any free will for them is just a sham. Anyone inside a universe Sburb touches is doomed to whatever Sburb has decided for them anyway. They just made the best of the hand paradox space dealt to them.
Anyway, that’s my reasoning for the points you brought up. Thanks again for the thoughtful comment, it actually makes me happy to have anyone engage something I wrote with a critical mind!
thank you for the crit haha!!
youre right i did go a bit j.j abrams on the formatting and exclamation points, so ill try to restrain myself in future.
admittedly this fic was aimed at explaining- maybe not explaining, just establishing? perhaps? how shadow works in my head in the ms universe rather than focusing on character, but youre right again i shouldnt have sacrificed character work for pyrotechnics haha.

Could you be a little more specific? What do you feel contradicts Problem Sleuth canon?

Flamia on On Slick’s Taste in Cars
I agree on the Droog part, Slick wouldn’t really fancy stylish suits (at least not as much as Droog, those are more his cup of tea). But I know that apartments are an investment, even if they’re not used – stock quotes and all that shit, I’m going to assume Droog takes care of that on his behalf. And yes, he does have his hideout in a tiny little manhole, but what gangster doesn’t have alternative hideouts/places to stay at just in case his hideout is found out or he gets a limb busted (AHEM) and the headquarters are too far?

I do enjoy a purely fluffy or purely sad story, but I think my favorite stories—the ones that really stick with me—are the ones where the protagonists go through hell, persevere, and then get the happy ending that they deserve. Hearing that someone else thinks I managed to pull that off here makes me very glad.

That’s pretty much because it is. The thought went like this “Wow, there isn’t really any fic where the crew play music. Hey, I could write that!”.
I do kind of think it needs more to it, but hell if I know what.

Flamia on Tools
You know, not to cause any drama or anything, really…but I’ve seen all of your comments on Path’s work, and a vast majority are nothing but negative. If you don’t like the way she writes fine, but why do you keep hanging around this section of the archive then? Move on, I’m sure there are authors that you’ll esteem better than this in your personal taste.
So sorry for the rather late reply — my job irl has been eating me alive. x.x
Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for the critique. <3
It means a lot to me that you’d take the time to analyze my work like that and give me points to help me improve. (And I’ll definitely keep them in mind when writing further installments.)
Once again, thank you. :)
Thank you! and she definitely got worst post-exile. pre-exile, there was at least some fond feelings on her end, even if there weren’t on Slick’s, whereas now her entire goal is to humiliate Slick and hurt her for betraying Snowman, since I think she never gets over the fact that be betrayed her.
Hahah whoops, thank you!
Yes, exactly! They never really catch on to how they’re surviving and just assume that the time-shit also somehow translates into there being an infinite amount of them (Eggs and Biscuits also help with that impression).
There’s no threat in the world that would keep that baby alive for long. As soon as Jac gets a chance, that baby either ends up thrown out a window, or drown in the sink. The only way it will stay alive is if the Queen is constantly there to prevent Jac from killing it.
I’m very fond of the fact that happy endings depend entirely on what side you’re on.
In this case, there’s a bit of my headcanon showing. I figure that there’s a bit of programming in BQ’s head that encourages her to stay out of BK’s final battle unless it goes really badly, partly to still give the players an advantage in case they don’t manage to exile/kill her before they face him down. She’s bothered by his injury, but since it’s a mild and non-lethal one, she never pushed through that programming and headed for the Battlefield, which is what she would do if the injury was a lot more than just mild.
Ah, you’re starting to get into some of the earlier fics! I uploaded things backwards, so you’re about to start going back in time, figuratively speaking.
Anything that causes severe hallucinations (LDS for example) usually ends pretty badly and he needs someone to monitor him or else he’ll self-harm. And when he’s drunk, he’s usually just a depressed TMIing mess (drunk Die usually makes Poor Life Choices), but no matter his state of mind, whenever anyone brings his mother up, he gets very, very violent. She’s his berserk button.
Thank you! I’m still really fond of the constant mood-whiplash in this one. Ensemble fics are so hard to write, but I have so much fun doing them that it’s worth the pain.
Thank you! :D this fic is basically all the reasons I love them summed up.
Yeah, SST looks like it fits into canon, but there’s no way she would have only mutilated Slick and left the others alive if this had taken place.
And whoops, thanks for the correction! This is one of the pre-beta fics, and anytime I look at it, I end up spotting new typos and errors.
*grin* Thank you!
If you don’t like it… you don’t have to read it.
Seriously, no reason to be rude.
seriously man on The Felt.
jesus christ this was entirely uncalled for, nice job apparently ending the author’s updates. there’s concrit and then there’s your comment and the primary difference is the total lack of con in your crit
Change made, thanks! And I will be honest, I kind of prefer to write Scratchporn on the weird side, since he’s always got some sort of purpose behind his actions and it feels strange to ignore that when it comes to his sex life.
It’s a Russian nesting doll of horror! As for his actions, it’s about half and half. There’s some of him coping the Queen, since she was the ruler and what he knows about abusing power he learned from her, but there’s also enough of him finding new abuses and new ways to justify what he’s doing by filtering it through his own incredibly convoluted moral code.
Also thank you! this AU in particular was interesting to write because Ember laid all the groundwork for it, so I just had to pick up her concepts and take them to their depressing conclusions.
Kitty prototyping was amazing and I wish we’d gotten more with it.
She’s mostly on top of the desk because Jack won’t come out, but also because no matter her mental state, she understands that desks are the perfect height for her to sit on and the perfect way to piss Jack off. As for remembering, which she does, she just decides to pretend the whole thing never happened, though sometimes she vaguely suggests she might know something, just to see Jack get scared.
In this case, their horror is directly tied to the flipping into kismessitude since they’re more comfortable as moirails and the sudden physical sexual component is enough to make them feel shaken and distressed.
Crowbar’s reasoning for participating is that Slick already wants to kill him and will do so the second he gets a chance, so there’s no real harm in giving him a reason to want to do it besides “Because you and Snowman are on the same team”. As for Snowman, she’s likely aware that Slick will eventually succeed in murdering everyone anyway, so at least they’re messing with him while the Felt’s still alive to do so, since they’re destined to die whether they do or don’t mess with Slick.
Hello! Thanks for leaving me your opinion. Thanks also for pointing out the spelling error, I’ll be sure to fix it as soon as I get online (I’m on my phone at the moment). I probably should have mentioned that a friend of mine asked me to write these, though I warned her they’d be awful and sure enough, they came out badly. Sorry if you didn’t enjoy them because of the poor quality, but they were mostly meant for her in the first place! Thanks for reading regardless.
Thank you again for reading, however again I feel I should point out these weren’t necessarily made for quality reading! I’m glad you enjoyed this one a bit more and I apologise for any characterisation you feel was out of line. Personally I agree with you wholeheartedly, haha. Really though, thanks very much for reading, and I hope you didn’t feel like you wasted too much of your time!
ah hello again!
i did this with rose and him because I ship it! its my homestuck otp, to be blunt. though i do appreciate the criticism i felt like they would have maybe a soft cutesy relationship with a studio apartment and weird pets like hedgehogs. i don’t know! however i will practice writing them more before my next Great Big Homestuck writing with them.
