Day 6 Reviews (8)

Getting a Green Butler (Lord English, Dave)

The difference between Lord English’s idle whims and Dave’s misery gives this a really creepy feel, but Lord English doesn’t have any real connection to canon here, he’s just a collection of traits to make the story work.

Perfected Empty Equality (Snowman (Droog))

This is decent, but it’s got that same unpleasant undertone running through it.

At home, she takes faint joy in forcing Crowbar to strike a match and hold it for her. But he’s weak, and the strength he thinks he has just makes him weaker.

I really don’t see Snowman as someone that pleased with the mess of gender politics. Most of this stuff is a matter of getting guys to do things because a weak, fragile lady like you couldn’t possibly… Sure, better some power than none at all, but for someone who canonically is perfectly capable on her own, it’s an enormous step down.

And while I think they’re supposed to be enjoying themselves together, it really doesn’t come off that way to me. It’s more like Slick’s two dumped lovers passing the time together. There’s no real sense of enjoyment at all here.

And then Path told me to shut up if all I have to say is putting stuff down because it’s just for fun! Ranting will be confined to here from now on.

Give and Take (PM (WV))

They spend the next three minutes attempting to out-apologize each other.

At least they’re being cute while crippled by dysfunction and trauma.

A sweet fic, and a nice contrast between the two. It’s bad to be a killer, but it’s not good to let people die or die yourself. It’s best, though, if their new world doesn’t require making that kind of choice.

(The rings are terrible if you’re trying to make a stable society, aren’t they? It’s sort of like having nukes in peacetime if nukes could be slipped into your pocket, keyed to make you immune to harm, and reused indefinitely. I’ll vote for chucking them into the Forge.)

Taking your enemies out on walks (PS (SS))

Already reviewed this on FFN.

The only entry in Clubs Deuce’s diary (CD (MC, Felt))

Think I reviewed this too. If not, no real loss, it’s pretty much one step away from Mesprit’s wacky teen adventures pranking the other legendaries.

Three Exiles, Slightly Broken (PM (WV, AR))

I said this elsewhere, but this is a wonderful fic and deserves to have that said again.

Tea or Death (Death, Vriska, Female OC)

Ugh, I feel unclean just reading this. Extended torture for Vriska with the constant refrain that she deserves it, plus you made up a female OC to be similarly tortured to death, plus

She shivered as his cold breath seeped out his boney jaw and teased her neck with and lips a dreary kiss.

Just why would you even do this.

Technically falls within the broadest confines of this, since carapaces is including the Problem Sleuth crew is including side characters is including Death. Also, I just tend to click Vriska fic.

Midnight City Chapter 1: WV – The Way You Say Goodnight (WV (PM, SS))

Hello unending depression. Well, at least PM seems okay and happy enough… for now.

Slick leans against WV’s desk, showing his utter disrespect for everything related to the mayor. Visionary hates when Slick leans against his desk

Slick learned from the best.

Chapter 2: PM – Brand New Colony (PM, (Slick, MC))

…and whiplash! Highly appreciated whiplash, I need a break from misery. I’d compliment Slick’s failnuendo, but really it’s a team effort – Droog’s effortless better-than-youness, Boxcars’ friendliness and attempts to keep the peace, Deuce’s casual assumption she’s Droog’s girlfriend all elevate it from merely amusing into something sublime.

PM never fails. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night, nor gunfire or nasty desert creatures or weird creatures with supernatural powers could stay her from the swift completion of her appointed rounds. The best the post office could promise was “maybe sometime this week, and only if it’s a good neighbourhood”.

<33333 It’s sort of funny to see how easily she deals with them after how terrified WV is. I wonder who has the better grasp of the Crew’s real capabilities – I fear PM’s underestimating them, but I’d like to hope WV’s terror isn’t completely justified either.

Chapter 3: AR – Upholding the Law (AR (MP, DR))

And depressing again, but a lot more hopeful. All of this is terribly sweet. Nice people talking to other nice people nicely while they eat nice things in a nice place. I really, really hope it does work out, and do so with a minimum of collateral damage, and AR and MP get married and live happily ever after.

8 reviews and 8 stories, although there’s still five chapters to go on that last one. Tomorrow.

Lord English, Dave
Snowman (Droog)
PM (WV)
PS (SS)
CD (MC, Felt)
PM (WV, AR)
Death, Vriska, Female OC
WV, PM, AR (SS, MC, MP, DR)

Five of eight. We continue to do well. Splitting Midnight City Stories lowers that a bit, since there’s three viewpoint characters and it’s two to one, but even that only shifts it to five of ten.

You may be interested to know that Path asked his tumblr followers what to do when someone criticizes your work and while most of them gave reasonable answers one girl calling herself JessicaSephiroth told him to stab you.

    1. Farla says:

Well, I have to admit stabbing is in theme for us.

      And for Sephiroth.

  2. Tessanon says:

Why are you including Problem Sleuth characters as carapaces? Even if you’re counting PS!Midnight Crew as the same as Homestuck!Midnight Crew*, everyone else is human.

*Which I’d really rather believe they aren’t, because the idea of Jack Noir suddenly revealing that by the way, he has superior shadow-based magic on top of everything else terrifies me.

    1. Farla says:

Because overlap. The MC crosses over with PS, so people sometimes cross them over in the other direction. So Homestuck-only characters show up in the PSverse where everyone’s human, or Problem Sleuth gets turned into a Prospitian, or it’s a fic that only includes the MC and makes no references that’d let you tell if it’s the carapace or shadow magic version.

Since PS fic is pretty thin on the ground and it’s almost all connected to the MC who I am reviewing, I figured I’d just include the couple extra fics.
