Last time,
Now, to actually enter…

Dammit!

Technically, still a type of force.

Even before you realize psychic is totally overpowered, how many people actually used fighting pokemon? There aren’t that many and they aren’t that good – sure, a lot of trainers carry normal-types, but they’re the easy ones.
I guess it’s there as advance warning to anyone who thought the pokemon they just got at the dojo might be helpful here. (Because really, how contrived would it be to have someone hand you exactly the pokemon you need for an upcoming battle?) But really, you’re already told as much in the dojo itself.
Do you have anything helpful for me? Like what types you think I should use, or a hint about strategy?
I must admit I was less than enthused by the teleport pads, what with having just done this puzzle in Silph. I also didn’t really grasp how maps worked, so I thought I had to check every possible route to be sure I’d seen everywhere and fought everyone. It’s actually nowhere near that difficult – it’s a simple three-by-three grid, so you can always identify the position of a room by the edges of the map.
I, instead, assumed I needed to go through every single route.

Huh, I didn’t remember that. Misty and Brock seem more like the young gym leaders. Maybe they put emphasis on it here because those two are weakest gym leaders but Sabrina’s one of the tougher ones.

This isn’t the first undertrainer to express this sort of investment, but the first to tie it to age like this. Are they saying that since they respect her, they won’t slack off?

It’s a surprisingly lackluster spite for such a good concept.
Also, so there’s now a third thing that’s just called “PSYCHIC” in this game.

Holy shit I’d forgotten what slowbro looked like. Teddybear and bone monster locked in a fight to the death.

So it seems the two coexisted peacefully for at least a decent amount of time. I wonder what triggered it.

It was stuff like this that made me panic and check every possible path. It looks like there’s some endless row of rooms despite the fact that actually, I’m seeing all the rooms in this row right now.

Yes, sometimes you need healing items too.

This one is putting it all on Sabrina. It’s possible the other trainer was using “we” in the same way fans of a sports team might, or perhaps they fought the undertrainers and Sabrina fought the leader alone.
It also means that this was a very recent thing.
One of the missed opportunities here is to take into account that due to the type advantage, the other gym could actually be significantly stronger levelwise and still lose. I like Sabrina, so I’m happy with this particular bit, but another game having a similar setup only for players to find out that challenging the defeated gym was practically impossible at their level unless they had a team of the same type as the victorious gym leader.

It might if you were using it in any meaningful way.
Well, actually, the floaty pokeball thing probably would unnerve opponents who were actually there. And if they can do the same silent command thing as anime Sabrina, that’d likely throw trainers off their game a bit too.

Now I have a woodblock bird too!

The very second episode of the anime I watched established magikarp were inedible, so I was confused by this.

I’m not sure why the game has psychic powers inarguably exist while at the same time giving all psychics mentioning it dialogue like they’re charlatans,

Can you also read what I’m thinking now?

Further confusing matters, there are channellers here too, with ghosts.

Pretty powerful ones, too.

Why are the pads here different? That always bugged me.

Really emphasizing the age thing.

Sure.

Anyway, now on to Sabrina.

I bet I can still win.

Sabrina has remarkably little consistency between incarnations. Her Special counterpart joined Team Rocket, another manga had her a scatterbrained older women, she’s batshit insane in the anime…

She really doesn’t look all that young, does she? Also, why does she have a whip? Come to think of it she looks sort of like Jesse. Just stick an R on the shirt.

Yeah, that’ll sure help you against fly.
And that was an even better use of your time.

This one at least tries, but the poisonpowder misses.
You can see here that the designers had trouble properly doing typed teams. Venomoth learns psychic moves, so here it is.

Isn’t that a weird message? I never knew exactly how that was different than just defense boosters.

Didn’t screencapture right, as you see, but you get the idea.

Arg, that’s such an annoying thing to say.

Yay!

Of which I have zero, and that likely won’t change between now and getting the earthbadge.

Yeah, but I already have psychic.
Apparently, this is basically a less predictable version of night shade.
Stuff like this may have contributed to the view of psychic as the underlying connective type to all others, or it may have had no impact at all.

…actually, no, that is clever. Normally people say lottery tickets, but as they’ve shown, psychics definitely have telekinesis but are crappy at predicting the future at best.
So yeah, go cheat at slots instead.

I never had a good grasp of the layout as a kid either and was terrified I might miss a trainer. Or never find Sabrina. Or get lost forever. None of these things ever happened, though.
Team Rocket invades, they mess with the communication system so there’s nothing to do, you have a young gym leader eager to prove herself… obviously the answer is to go beat up your next door neighbors.
It seems like she did this beforehand, since her gym is blocked off once they actually show up. I wonder if there’s meant to be any connection, though? Like, perhaps her beating them up and crippling the gym meant Saffron was left an easier target. Then again, since you can stop gym leaders from interfering by just having a guy outside the door, maybe not.
I always hated the layout of Sabrina’s gym. It made me want to stab myself with a butter knife.
It’s not too bad once you know what’s going on, though! But not a good followup after Silph.
The “gained armor” message is just Reflect, right? The main difference between Reflect/Light Screen and regular defensive boosts is that they reduce the damage on your side with physical/special attacks for five turns rather than actually modifying the stats of this particular Pokémon; you can switch out and the replacement will still have the protection. But yeah, the message doesn’t indicate that at all.
It doesn’t just not indicate it, it sounds like the opposite. You can figure out there’s something different about light screen because it can’t be stacked like the other moves. But then you have the armor message that sounds like it’s only on that particular pokemon. I knew there was something going on with the move and how it messed with defense, but I never figured out what. Back in the RBY days I didn’t even realize reflect and light screen were meant to be the same sort of move.
I always hated Sabrina’s gym in Yellow version. The other gym leaders had higher levels as well in Yellow compared to Red/Blue, along with somewhat different teams, but since Psychic is so overpowering in Gen 1, Sabrina is especially difficult. The big problem is that the Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam combo all have high special and speed, andd they’re also all level 50 in a part of the game that without dedicated level grinding, you’re lucky to have level 40 pokemon. Combine all this and prepare for a difficult battle.
I never had too much trouble, but then I always fight everything in my path so I tend to end up overleveled.
