Last time, more Silph!
Today, Silph!
Every time I see this sprite, it gets a little more ridiculous, and the fact it’s popping up in an office building taken over by the mob is not helping matters.
Also, it always bothers me when the number of pokemon is fewer than the number of pokeballs you see the sprite juggling. They should have given all the jugglers a minimum of four pokemon. I could accept the idea they might not be juggling all their pokeballs, so higher numbers are okay, but two? Two isn’t even that hard to juggle.

Well, it depends how long it took Gary to find his current spot. But probably, Gary never bothers dealing with the plot. He’s a good, non-killstealer rival
Interesting fact: I entered the same way, through that narrow corridor. It seems like I was able to dodge the guy going down because he only pops up on the screen when you reach the point you turn, but on the way back he’s already loaded and ready to see you.
The four brothers are an okay touch. I never much cared, but it’s something different. Also, they all say the same thing about their brothers avenging them, even if you’ve beaten the rest.

But the real question is, are you the sole manufacturer or one of many? Do you own the patents?

That sounds like it’s very relevant to my interests.

What, beating every criminal between you and the exit isn’t good enough?

I suppose, but honestly, you’re all sitting around instead of trying to escape. Or I assume, anyway, maybe you’re just glad the meeting was interrupted. Most boring thing imaginable.

What? But that’s what I want to do! Oh, it’s on now!

It’s still unclear what the actual plan is. I guess get the blueprints so Team Rocket can make the stuff instead of relying on buying it? I would assume that a lot of it requires specialized factories for the parts, though. So maybe it’s just take them over and use them to produce what Team Rocket wants.

Really? It sounds nice. Hawaiian, maybe.

NIDORINA’S FINALLY LEARNING HALFWAY DECENT MOVES!

…oh. Well, in that case joining up with the mob in order to help them take over the company and oust your boss seems reasonable.
I wonde how many workplace shootings and bomb scares Silph has on a daily basis. They seem to have angered almost all of their scientists.

Uh, I guess?

They’re over the top, but it’s a so of classy over-the-top, you know?

It’d be interesting if there were a lot of kids just wandering around and it just didn occur to anyone to give more of a description than that the intruder was a child.

What, he’s not already? I guess he isn’t paying attention. Maybe I should go find more of you to beat up.

And speaking of other child intruders, here’s Gary! How he got there is a mystery, since the doors to the teleport pad you need are shut and require a card key. He must have gotten one, then found this area, then relocked the doors behind him.
And that’s what a rival should be. None of this helping me fight business.

I don’t believe they ever give a specific reason for this, it’s just ha such a device would be useful in general. I”m not sure Giovanni even knows about Mewtwo’s existence, or, for that matter, the other legendaries.

Wait, you have pokemon? And you’re just sitting around?
Also, taking over your pokemon is some weird phrasing. I bet you work in marketing.

No, disgruntled scientists are kind of the rule here, not the exception,

Always bugged me that you couldn’t mess with climate using dragonair.

I have no idea. You’ve definitely been taken over, bu I’m more than halfway done beating them all up.

Decent stats. I didn’t realize dragonair evolve at thirty, for some reason I was sure it was thirty-two or thirty-three.

I’m tearing my way ever upward…

He has the standard scientist pokemon, which are basically the same as a super nerd only with more emphasis on the voltorb. Point is, he’s in no position to type match. What an idiot.

Take your own advice!

There’s something funny about their tiny black boots.

Nope. You’re kind of a wimp.

I wonder if kids normally wander in to demand battles from whatever scientist is around, so my presence isn’t actually that strange.

Well, now that I’ve cleared the building, time to fight the boss…

And there’s the only computer left in the building.
No way in from over here, either.
Now to go find the secret entrance.

God, Silph was the best. Just frustrating enough to be hard, with an obvious but unintuitive puzzle, and so much area you could explore but didn’t have to. Every time I go in there I go methodically up each floor without warping, them get the key, then sweep each floor again with the key… it’s great.
Compare this to, say, Chargestone cave, which was a straight line that had a character midway through to explain to you how to complete the non-puzzle.
With the efforts to pander to new gamers, I think Nintendo forgets sometimes that the way they got us in the first place was with these types of games. Think of Mario 64, which had easter eggs and tons of shit to do, but you could still clear easily if you felt like it.
I don’t understand why they took out the built-in difficulty levels. Obviously it was more work for the developers and game the game more replay value (which is bad for them, I guess), but… then again, they’re raking it in, so what do I know.
So much fun. I remember how much I loved going through every inch of it. I used a fusion of Silph and Lavender Tower in a gaming module a little while ago and it went over so well.
Wow, I’d never noticed Gary was there before! What happens if you go up and talk to him?
I kind of want a fic with Silph and POKEMON LAB having a Black Mesa/Aperture thing going on. Or just Silph as Aperture, or even Viridian Dynamics.
You can’t have Viridian Dynamics based in Saffron. That would just be silly.
One of my favorite parts of the original generation of Pokemon was the frozen status. It was difficult to get since the moves that had a chance to only had a 10% chance, but when they were frozen, they were done unless an item was used or you for some dumb reason attack them with a fire attack.
Sure, it was fun when it worked out in your favor, but it could make fighting Lorelei hell on earth.
