Pokemon Omega Ruby Day 20

So – wingull horde! Silver murders them in a single blow and levels yet again. He’s way too high level, but I have no one else who can surf… If only this was Sapphire and lotad were an option oh right I can hack in anything.

Shiny lotad friend!

 (Regular is)

Lotad live in ponds and lakes, where they float on the surface. It grows weak if its broad leaf dies. On rare occasions, this Pokémon travels on land in search of clean water.

I exchange Silver for my grovyle and set off again. She’s only L28. Tryke’s a measly L27, but I want cut and nothing else I’m raising right now learns that. Really, giving a HM move to my starter was kind of inevitable. I always get annoyed and end up doing that – even taught my precious probably hacked gen1 mew fly.

My, hordes are more annoying when you can’t surf your way to an instant victory, but it’s worth it to see how electrike hordes trip over each other thanks to lightningrod preventing their attacks from hitting my pokemon.

Lotad’s evolving!

Regular one is:

Lombre is nocturnal—it will get active after dusk. It is also a mischief maker. When this Pokémon spots anglers, it tugs on their fishing lines from beneath the surface and enjoys their consternation.

Also it occurs to me that lombre then evolves by stone. Ah well, I’ve never raised one so I’ll keep it around.

And…oh my that’s a L36 vileplume. I have stumbled into difficulty.

Well. Paralysis lets me get in about as much damage as it recovers through mega drain, thanks to it forgetting it has aromatherapy most of the battle, then it remembers just as Numel is killing it and it’s burned.

I then discover the land of far-apart berry patches. The person there says they like growing them, but the trees themselves only give me their minimums as if they’re not being cared for. I really wish there was an area where an NPC would do this for you, in all seriousness. You could even pay.

Now to slink away with my battered team. Grovyle’s actually still doing pretty well, because with no good moves I decided to keep her as a last resort against the vileplume of doom.

Linoone!

Linoone always runs full speed and only in straight lines. If facing an obstacle, it makes a right-angle turn to evade it. This Pokemon is very challenged by gently curving roads.

This must be hilariously awesome to watch.

Why is one of the trainers staring away from me as if they have no interest in forcing me into a battle?

Thanks to that Aarune dude, I’ve been awakened to the adventure that is building a Secret Base. He said he would be waiting for me with the Secret Base Guild, but Fortree City is far away.

Uh…sort of? If you’re lazy.

Kecleon!

…finishes off my nearly dead team. Ah well.

Already, back to the grind.

And now magnemite’s evolving. Thanks, Magnemite, it’s not like I’m struggling along with otherwise low level pokemon or anything.

Magneton emits a powerful magnetic force that is fatal to mechanical devices. As a result, large cities sound sirens to warn citizens of large-scale outbreaks of this Pokémon.

So here’s a pokemon that doesn’t seem to be disadvantaged by the expansion of human society. Instead the conflict is because humans have begun to rely more and more on a particular crutch that coincidentally magneton have horrible effects on. That’s still not likely to end well for the pokemon – are the warnings simply warnings, or do they attempt to drive out/capture/kill the magneton to deal with it?

Well, I do still have my loudred to raise.

Current team:

L31 grovyle
L21 lombre
L23 swablu
L31 loudred
L25 numel
“It looks as thought this Egg will take a long time yet to hatch.” egg

Gloom! I need two of you.

And now I have zero stupid pokemon fainting on you.

The trainers around mention being all mimicy, which rings a faint bell. They move when you do. Shame they weren’t given a bunch of pokemon with mirror move and mimic. (Did you know that back in the first gen, mimic was a TM, and one meowth could learn! So you could make a meowth who knew mimic, double team, and substitute. If you traded it to GSC, you could then teach it psych up, for a perfect themed moveset.)

Gloom at last!

Gloom releases a foul fragrance from the pistil of its flower. When faced with danger, the stench worsens. If this Pokemon is feeling calm and secure, it does not release its usual stinky aroma.

Then I get locked into an endless battle with an illumise. It knows both moonlight and wish. I manage to seed it with my lotad, then start fighting with my swablu who’s finally learned a decent move in take down. So, Swablu uses take down, takes damage, is full healed due to leech seed, then the illumise heals herself.

Ah, there’s a house you can rest at just beyond.

TROPIUS FINALLY

And it’s apparently perpetually flying. Not how I pictured it at all.

I catch it in a premierball.

The bunches of fruit around Tropius’s neck are very popular with children. This Pokemon loves fruit, and eats it continuously. Apparently, its love for fruit resulted in its own outgrowth of fruit.

The pokemonverse makes Lamarckian evolution seem reasonable.

But then again, “apparently” sounds like it means this is just something a random person said as if it were a fact with no actual studies done to verify it. So, I’m going to guess it’s nonsense. More likely, tropius feast on other fruit to gain the components to produce their own fruit.

“He’s way too high level, but I have no one else who can surf…” Didn’t you catch a tentacool recently or did I imagine that?

With the Magneton thing, I’m imaging some pokemon adapting to basically be anti-human machines, evolving specifically to fight off the squishy apex predators and their technology.

I was planning not to raise anyone I can catch later, so no to tentacool, but I’ve changed my mind given how fast they’re evolving.

The thing is, evidence is that adapting to fight us off is like the anti-adaption, it just makes us target the new threat. There’s a hell of a lot more housecats than tigers these days.

Which suggests magneton need us to exist, because it’s a really bad idea to fight with us over resources if there’s any better option. They may not be able to survive on “natural” sources of electricity.

There is no shortage of water-types where you’re at in the game. With a good rod you could have gotten Corphish, Carvahna, Barboach, and Wailmer by now.

    1. Farla says:

I initially gave up because I kept hitting magikarp instead of anything new and figured I needed to wait for the great rod.

  3. nahte says:

You know you can turn off the EXP share right?

    1. Farla says:

Yeah, but I really resent a system that only works if I deliberately hobble myself. Plus this is working out pretty well with the raising of lots of other pokemon without tedious switching.
