Pokemon Yellow Part 12

Nidorina has really, really improved.

It’s funny how this was probably meant critically when it was first written, yet already it’s become the party line. Probably the only reason you’re able to evolve your squirtle and bulbasaur is it’d have been extra coding to prevent it.

Cute no longer, but an okay fight.

Well, I’ve made it through the trainer gauntlet, but my parasect is doomed if I head for Celadon.

Or it could be doomed either way. Normally this doesn’t happen much because normally I don’t bother trying to get to the pokecenter in time in the first place.

Well, we’re healed and ready for Celadon and their organized crime that definitely doesn’t exist.

I guess the real question becomes, why didn’t they just spring for a couple more custom sprites?

Yup.

There are some other things to do, though.

So now I’ve got a backup electrocuter and one of the best moves in the game.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

I’m thinking of raising a flareon to see how it does against Gary’s. Plus, they’re objectively terrible and that’s always something to experience for yourself.
In the meantime, though, I have other pokemon to raise.

And gyms with laughably poor security. Of course, why avoid them?

Oh, cruel irony! Oh, broken mechanics!

Also, wrap. I’m usually much higher level, so I get the first move and just crush them all. The weepinbell keeps sleeping/wrapping my pokemon.

There’s actually a lot of nuance put into the battles and movesets, but you can easily miss it all by being just slightly too high level.

When I do it, it’s being clever. When they do it, it’s unfair and cheating!

Another bit of battles you can miss when you just crush everyone in a single hit.

Shame the AI is so terrible.

Also, look, Pikachu climbed a tree while the others fought! Aw.

Yeah, that battle did not go well for my lower-level pokemon.

As you can see here, even a shared-type move that’s super effective isn’t good enough for an instant knockout.

But, we muddle through and my precious drowzee finally gets a good physical move…I think, not sure if mega punch is better or what. The flinch potential should be pretty useless given drowzee’s speed stats, but it’ll be able to make an existing advantage that much greater.

Her sprite’s been modified very slightly to now have long sleeves.
The battle is meh. I struggle with her initial pokemon, but once they’ve demolished my weaker pokemon, the strong ones come out and they pound her final one into the ground before it can do anything.

It’s at this point I screw up my save file somehow and end up back at Cerulean. So, we’ll end here and I’ll work/cheat my way back to this point next week. Remember what I was saying about how great and stable the games were? They were so great and stable and this never happened to me, while it’s now happened both times I’ve used emulators. Next time I try this, lots of backup save files.

I’m going to hazard a guess that at this point the Pokemon Yellow run is probably done. Hard to justify continuing to post when nobody is paying attention…

NEVER. It’s stalled because I need to replay a big chunk and the game is on a different computer, but I will be getting back to it.

There’s actually decent numbers of people clicking on this, but even if they weren’t, I’d do it because it’s fun. Kind of like how I’m going to inflict the next Exalted book on everyone no matter how little they want it!

Good to hear :) I’ve always enjoyed your Pokemon play throughs and I’m looking forward to when you can start up again. I do read some of your other stuff on here, but there’s no doubt that these are my favorites, and the only ones I really bother to comment on. I also like how active a commenter you are on the site. Definitely gives it a fun, interactive feel :)
