Pretty Cure Season One Part 3

Last time, didn’t the plot just resolve? I thought the plot just resolved.

Ep 27: Okay, something weird’s happened causing the flowers to die and then something scary grows in the blighted area. And the queen explains that the dark king sent off seeds of evil and they landed in the human world, so we’re finally going to see a threat directly at the humans rather than the two fighting because of some other place.

Also, the teeny prince has some sort of power that’ll turn out to be really important. Kinda blah to have the plot be about him but whatever, he’s the cutest of the mascots. Also at least he’s actually a kid and not that weird mix of adult and baby the other two are.

Today’s episode is also about some salaryman, who turns out to be the seed and screams crazily before jumping out a window. I like everyone’s expression – it’s sort of surprised, but also like, yeah, we were sort of expecting that from him. Then everything resets and he’s even missing from the company picture. I am really confused about the timeline here. Was he a real person who got possessed by evil and then retconned out? Or did the seed hatch into a person-shape, retcon itself into the company during its growth, and this is reality going back to normal?

Ep 28: The OCMs are running around playing games and shouting their various nonsense endings to each sentence. Then Sporty starts to have a breakdown about the futility of everything because sooner or later they’ll fail and the darkness will win, and Science, who’s been pretty tough, says it’s only because she has Sporty to help that she isn’t a sobbing mess all the time too. Moodswings!

Science’s grandmother comes by to see that they’re looking pretty down. She says she knows how they feel and Science asks if there’s really ever been a time like this for her where she felt there was nothing she could do.

Well, that’ll teach the younger generation to think they have problems! Anyway, she’s talking about the city getting bombed, but she was carrying one of the OCMs in cellphone form that told her not to lose hope, so that was the solution.

This episode’s villain is pretty disappointing. It’s a woman who spends the episode looking panicked and scared and defended by mannequiny bodyguards. When she finally transforms, last episode’s villian grabs her and drags her off saying she’s got other stuff to do. Also her hair is dumb.

Ep 29 Waterfall! Nature! Another blight plant! The two previous blight-people, back in their human shapes, pause and look up.

Cut to Sporty’s little brother going to the hospital because he’s got a tummy ache after a watermelon eating contest with Sporty. When his mom chastises him he whines that she ate just as much, and she reminds him that his sister is a black hole wearing human skin and not subject to mortal limitations.

There’s also some weird looking director guy who I guess is the next blight guy. You know, I guess what it really is seems more like the evil blight takes over someone else and erases them from memory.

Also there’s a festival. Science gets a new yukata every year, so her grandmother modifies last year’s for Sporty, and everyone’s happy. Then they do Japanese stuff at the festival, and then there’s some haunted shrine and they decide to split into pairs to each go and prove they aren’t scared and Sporty gets her crush. Meanwhile, the prince-thing is wandering around and as usual no one notices. Maybe they’re all thinking Did I just see an animal? Nah, it’s Japan, we’ve killed all the animals off! Must be hallucinating. Only Sporty’s brother seems to notice anything, and he does the am-I-hallucinating eye rub of disbelief.

Anyway, it starts raining, she slips, Crush-chan slips catching her and hurts his leg. And their cellphones don’t work! But someone’s driving along and it’s director guy, who take them to the hospital. And now I guess it’s time to turn into a weird monster. And summon another weird monster. The dark monster thingy has electric cord tentacles and grabs them both, which come to think of it is actually the easy win button – all their attacks require them to hold hands, so holding them apart should make you unbeatable. But then it throws them into a wall together instead. Then rams into the wall itself.

This lets the third evil guy escape. In human form, he passes another guy, and then a nurse runs over to talk to the “director” as he’s walking away, but behind her the other guy answers, so I guess it really is some reality retcon. I really hope they eventually explain what’s up with all this.

And cut to his mansion with the other two and also a parrot, where he says that’s everyone. Also, the woman looks uncomfortable, so she’s either dying first or turning into an ally.

Ep30: The decide to grill the guardian guy about what’s up with the blight guys. God bless you, initiate-taking heroes. Also, Sporty’s done none of her homework and school starts tomorrow.

New evil cabal discusses bringing back the dark king, so I guess they’re not able to turn into one like I was expecting. Meanwhile hijinks with the dumbest of the OCMs. The girls end up having to weed the grass, which appears to involve pulling up grass from the grass. Then evil guys show up and the vice principal thinks third guy is the principal, so I guess they appear, everyone slots them into their lives, then bloom into freaky monster form and everyone forgets again. Memory cuckoos!

They fight well as a group. Nice to see coordinated evil people.

Meanwhile, guardian guy ends up transferring the light power to the dumbest of the OCMs for safekeeping, and then when he gets upset the power activates and gives an upgrade to the girls. The battle plotting of this show is just terrible. Anyway, now they have a new attack to yell.

At least they’re all genre savvy.

And so, the day is won, thanks to deus ex machina!

Ep31: THE EVIL DIRECTOR IS SHAKING THE PARROT’S BIRDCAGE BECAUSE HE’S MAD ABOUT THE PLOT DEVICE NOT WORKING WHY IS HE SO MEAN

Also guardian guy is just chilling in the cage.

Somehow evil director guy can make the bird attack him without so much as a word of command, and the guardian immediately folds and says that he’ll help them regain the power if he doesn’t get his head cracked like a peanut first.

Still no explanation about what the parrot is. Also, apparently the plan is to resurrect dark king first, and worry about the power second? That seems poorly reasoned, since last time they were under a time limit to get the power because the dark power devours itself. Otherwise this the Porun episode. Again. You can’t make me like him, show, just accept it.

As always, the battle makes no sense. They’re “trapped” in an area with walls that are barely taller than they are. Also huh, seems they need Porun to power them up every time. So he’ll be featuring even more from now on out. Then it ends with them actually reviving the dark king. That’s nowhere near as interesting as one of them turning into the new one. For some reason the chains don’t seem to be reconnecting.

Ep32:

Evil Director says this will be interesting. We did this already!

Then Porun, now that he’s got plot important stuff in him, wants to go back. As Sporty is chastizing him for being so noisy, her mom observes that Sporty’s been talking to herself more and more.

Back at Evil HQ, they still haven’t figured out the light powers are in Porun.

Meanwhile, Team Good takes Porun to an amusement park, where all the OCMs run free and somehow no one notices. Then the darkness suddenly depopulates the area.

Evil Lady is pretty hilarious when she’s in human form.
