So turns out I’m just under two years behind now. Damn.

Glitch FAQ Patch Notes
Just nice to see some sburb stuff.
Feeling Human Ch1 (Roxy (FOC))
The sun was bright, different from how it always looked when it spilled through the windows of your room. There, it was simply a gentle white glow, waking you up at appropriate times, alerting you of what time of the year it was. Outside… Outside you could touch it. In some places it filled you much like it filled your window panes and made every cell in your oh-so-pink body tingle and jump with warmth.
This is odd – are the windows tinted? Because the sun is always pretty painful white if you get it in your eyes otherwise, and sunlight is still warm through regular glass.
eighth year old
Eight, not eighth. And she sounds like she’s a lot younger than eight if she never even bothered going outside before.
Your toes hit the side of the building where your waist was recently leveled
Also, your wording is just strange. I think you’re saying here that she’s pulled herself up high enough that her toes are as high now as her waist was on the ground, but it’s a really bizarre way of putting it and really weird detail to focus on. And the language seems particularly odd given her current age is too young for it and the older Roxy we meet in canon doesn’t describe things like this either.
When they didn’t know how to care for something so small, you started to read. When you started to read
You also seem to be skipping around a lot. They don’t know how to deal with her injuries, therefore she learns to read? From who? How? Did they teach her? Why does she do this in response to being injured when the carapaces can read and would’ve tried that to deal with her first?
Feeling Human Ch2 (Roxy)
I like your writing a lot more here. It’s clear, well-described, she sounds more like her age, and I loved your explanation of how she finds the lab and stumbles on cat creation by sheer chance.
Fragile (WV (Roxy, PM))
The theme of this is good and I like how you write WV. The letter/prophesy addressed to him by name seems unnecessary, though – there doesn’t seem to be any particular reason Rose would think it just has to be him that raises her, especially when you have the others be friendly to her and AR be the only one to actually teach her combat without needing a letter saying they’ve been specifically chosen to do it too.
This makes me think of one of the things that nags me about canon – if you’re dealing with the characters based on their official roles, it’s so much less gender equal. Rose has no reason to pick PM for this, she’s just a mail lady who stumbles into importance in one timeline, and on the opposite side of the scale, the queens are ill-defined except for dying a lot.
The Disasters of Dating Dietary Dispensers (WV)
This is strangely dull for crackfic.
Homestuck’s plodding execution of weird ideas is not really any better than the LOLZRANDOM!!! that plagues pokemon, it just looks more mature.
Sound- Misc. Information [Sburb Glitch FAQ Guest Chapter]
More sburb stuff.
The Impossible Project (Dave (Terezi, WV))
The whole darkroom business really doesn’t seem like it fits with Dave at all. He lived in a cramped apartment with Bro constantly messing with him and unable to even buy food for himself, it’s really hard to believe he bought all the chemicals himself and managed a sealed closet. And it doesn’t align well with any of his existing interests or the fact his alchemized crap-photomaker was a polaroid, nor with how high tech everything else is so if anything, it’d be digital cameras.
…and then the resolution is him discovering polaroids are also an option?
The Mayor says his own thing in his weird purr-clack language.
They’re perfectly understandable. Their purpose is to be quest-giving NPCs for the game and they can’t possibly do that if they can’t communicate.
This is a good example of why I don’t like Dave/Terezi or the whole Cantown buddies! bit, it tends toward being coolronic Dave and wacky sidekicks.
Saviour Of The Waking World: A Guide For The Infected
Hm. It’s an interesting setup for game replays, but I’m not sure what’s added by making it be about players who are infected/possessed into the choice rather than the game just shunting them where it wants or them actually feeling this way.
Omniscience (FOC (Doc Scratch))
This is self-insert OC/Doc Scratch I missed the first time around, which has a sequel:
Fraternize with the Enemy (Slick (MC, FOC))
and whatever it is, it is NOT one of the Felt, despite the disgusting green coat it’s wearing.
Why would Slick assume this? Snowman and Scratch don’t have green skin either, but they’re still members of the Felt. If she’s dressed in their colors while hanging out in their mansion, she’s probably a member too.
“You grabbed a BYSTANDER.”
No, they didn’t. They grabbed someone hanging out in the Felt’s house. At most, she’s not an actual gang member, but she’s still involved enough to maybe be worth something to the Felt. Even if she’s just some minor person to the point none of the Felt care, she’s still someone who might have useful info for them, and they can always kill her to make a point about what happens to people who deal with the Felt.
Fraternize with the Enemy (DD, FOC (MC))
The dame on the sofa sure as hell LOOKS like she might belong to the Felt, so you can’t fault Deuce or Boxcars for making the mistake. Despite being some strange species unrelated to you or them, she just looks the part, the way she’s dressed absolutely screams of being something that Snowman had gotten her paws on.
…so why is it definitely a mistake? Why does the fact they don’t recognize her matter either? Why does wearing green mean Snowman in particular’s involved in the outfit?
…and now they’re still stuck on her being some uninvolved woman they need to apologize and treat nicely, because that’s how murderers are.
“Ughhhh… Goddamnit, Scratch, I blame you for this. If you didn’t fuck me so good I’d quit this stupid gang and I know you know it.”
No one would actually be saying this, let alone in a room full of violent rival mobsters.
At least they’re finally clued in to the obvious fact she is in fact a Felt member. All it took was her telling them outright in a way that made no sense..
the pet of their boss.”
Lord English is the boss, not Scratch.
Fraternize with the Enemy (FOC (MC))
And now we descend into the straightforward sueishness of the gang not harming her in the least while she corrects them about facts and explains to them they suck and she could walk out any time because, as a sue, she knows nothing bad can actually happen to her.
The final posted chapter takes this and multiplies it a few hundred times. Stop doing such shitty self-inserts, fandom.
Her Incompetent Condensation (Condesce (Dualscar, Handmaid, Signless, Summoner))
A behind the scenes / parallel work to Homestuck. Reimagines the Troll Empress not as a diabolical Queen but as a pawn in Lord English’s games. The intent is to follow the life of Meenah from her wriggling day all the way until her ruling days on Alpha Earth, with the assumption that her attitude was entirely petulant and impulsive, kept forever young (and immature) by her Life powers (and most importantly her primary source of competence was The Handmaid and Lord English).
Or “Hey, what if none of the women had any agency?” It’s trollcentric so I’m just going to avoid it completely.
Roxy (FOC)
WV (Roxy, PM)
Dave (Terezi, WV)
FOC (Doc Scratch)
SS, DD, FOC (HB, CD)
Condesce (Dualscar, Handmaid, Signless, Summoner)
Actually managed four of six today.
Finishing on page 941. So much to do.
“Stop doing such shitty self-inserts, fandom.”
Aw, but shitty self-inserts are the best kind of badfic! They’re just so earnest. I’d take them over fics that make the canonical female characters horrendously OOC for the sake of wish fulfillment any day.
I’m so glad to see you get back these finally~
This wasn’t the good kind, she’s a personality eater who makes everyone sound the same: obsessed with how great she is.
Plus there’s a chance if the story continued we would get Snowman bashing given the story takes a weird sideswipe at her.
But the story didn’t continue, so obviously Slick kills her at the end! I mean, he was just saying how they can’t kill her, and he just found her lounging on HIS PIANO, so clearly now is the time for him to make a hypocrite of himself! If she were a bit smarter she could escape with her time powers, but her cockiness is going to be the literal death of her.
That would actually work! Slick initially hesitates to straight up murder her because he knows old timey gangsters aren’t supposed to murder non-gangster women
and also hostages only work if they’re alive, so he tries to be friendly. She thinks it’s a sign he can’t bear to hurt her and tries to order them around. Slick stabs everything. On an unrelated note, when I went through that section of the archive to see what would be coming up, I started noticing a lot of works tagged “Mildly Dubious Consent”. Clicking on that revealed that is in fact a canon tag with over 2300 works in it.
Somehow this feels like an appropriate thing to note on the return of Chemical Garden readings.
That’s irritating. So is it overwarning for having half an ounce of beer and devaluing the whole idea, or “people kept complaining about all the coercion so I’ll throw the most noncommittal tag possible on there”?
Well, the stuff I found on the Homestuck tag was mostly Bro/Dave, so I’m guessing it’s largely “there cannot possibly be consent in this situation but the character in a position of lesser power REALLY wants it so it’s okay” stuff. Maybe it’s also a kind of creep, with obvious non-con being labeled dub-con so people who write the sort of stuff the “dub-con” label was invented for feel they need to categorize it differently.
But we already have a word and tag for that! INCEST!
Maybe it’s also a kind of creep, with obvious non-con being labeled dub-con so people who write the sort of stuff the “dub-con” label was invented for feel they need to categorize it differently.
I blame the “trigger warning” thing combined with AOOOOOOO’s botching everything about tagging they can. There’s a difference between porn and a regular fic with a passing reference to rape being very terrible . As soon as noncon’s supposed to cover both, of course everyone wants new words for their porn. And if the inevitable result means authors do backflips to try to justify how this isn’t really rape-rape and plays into exactly what it’s supposed to avoid…well, we can’t tell people how to tag stuff! o/
I’m pretty sure the creep, at least, can’t be pinned on AO3. I remember going through the Homestuck kinkmeme and boggling at the stuff that got tagged dub-con. There was one person who requested “dub-con” involving Eridan forcing Aradia at gunpoint, and then the actual fic also threw in him beating her up when she fought back anyway, and then the requester said it was exactly what they wanted.
Oh jesus fandom. Maybe because she had the option of being shot to death instead?
That may have been what was going through the requester’s mind, if it wasn’t just a straight-up unexamined aversion to calling things non-con. From the way it was written I kind of felt like the author’s rationale was something along the lines of “fighting back means she wants it because blackrom”.
It’s sad rape got confirmed in canon. I really liked the idea of dodging the whole thing by saying the whole strong emotions = stronger genes insanity meant it was mutual or nothing.
Well, maybe only a very specific kind of rape is possible? Mindfang is such a talented telepath that her victims have difficulty telling to what extent they’re really being controlled, so maybe the emotions *were* mutual because she put them there. I’m not sure how much that helps anything, but it’s a thought.
Unfortunately we’ve got that bit with Mindfang saying that right now, her slave is doing it because she expects to be beaten if she doesn’t. So at the least, some sort of sexual abuse can happen and it’s common enough that the average troll wouldn’t need the idea explained.
Oh, that’s right. Sigh.
Wow. Don’t criticize this book. The book is amazing and the writer is exceptional. Don’t spread your nasty thought only because you don’t know how to appreciate a good book.
Antecedents are your friends.
I’d just like to say that what I do appreciate is that you managed to say this on one of the few posts not about a book. Not everyone goes above and beyond like that, but you did!
