Tuesday Carapaces Part 21 (9 reviews, 7 stories)

Finishing November at last!

What Friends are For (SS (DD))

I write too much bromance.

It’s an obnoxious term and it’s not a synonym for moirails either, which in turn isn’t a synonym for friends, close or otherwise.

Slick might have made some tasteless wise-crack about Trolls and their strange bucket aversion

Pretty sure it’s wisecrack and trolls shouldn’t be capitalized.

“Alright then,” Slick barred his fangs and cracked his knuckles, “looks like we’re gonna have to do this the hard way.”

If it’s not followed by a speech verb, the dialogue shouldn’t end in a comma. It should be “Alright then-” Slick barred his fangs and cracked his knuckles. “-looks like we’re gonna have to do this the hard way.”

It’s nice to see some low-key drunkenness in fic and cute to see Slick attempting helpfulness.

Fade Away (DD (SS, PI))

As you stumble down the street, trying in vain to hold the last of your blood in, you make the mistake of looking at the sky.

Fuck. Goddammit, Slick, you idiot.

Change of plans. Fuck Slick, bastards who end the universe don’t deserve your encouragement. Pickle Inspector’s apartment is closer anyway.

You do a great job explaining the whole of the setup quickly and plausibly, and this bit also manages amusingly. Your Droog’s voice is generally good as well.

Long Night (PI (DD))

This is neither canon PI and DD, nor Mobsterswitched. It’s really just a study of PI.

I really don’t see how it can be a study of the character when you first say it’s not the character and then not even the fanon alt version.

And…really this is barely about him. There’s a guy who’s weak, timid, likes tea and is cold, and another guy who’s stronger, irritable, immune to everything physical and mental, apparently radiates heat, and for some reason is in a relationship with the first. You do a good job of writing about those two people, but it’s not telling anything about PI and DD.

The Consequences of Arthur Wilde (DD (SS, HB, CD, PI))

Droog really isn’t lonely and ignored by the Crew, and likely not the sort of person who’d utterly misjudge a situation like this. This is a creepy story but you’ve replaced Droog with someone else in the process.

The Old Ball and Chain Ch1 (PS (SS))

I like the text about how doubling works, it’s interesting to consider the purpose and development and this explains the inconsistent way things worked in PS quite well.

Also, Slick is hilariously awful.

The Old Ball and Chain Ch2 (PS (SS, DD, HB, CD))

Sleuth rolled his eyes and sank back into the couch. It was old, and maybe once it was black and leather, but now a significant portion of the arms and sides seemed to be various kinds of tape, in equally varied colours (though more on the dull and dark end of the scale). The cushions were covered by some dark fabric, presumably Droog’s last attempt at salvaging the poor thing. A scratching noise drew Sleuth’s attention to Slick scraping the tip of a knife against the seams of the tape on the arm, destroying what was probably his or Boxcars’ contribution to the couch restoration project.

All the little details in this are wonderful.

Also, the MC are all just perfect, and PS is shaping up to be an amusing narrator.

The Old Ball and Chain Ch3 (SS (PS, DD, HB, CD, HD))

And it was just like that for the next minute or so: Deuce and Boxcars discussed something that Slick didn’t care to pay attention to – probably bets or something, heh – and Sleuth stubbornly clung to consciousness. Or, Slick was bad at choking people out with his arm but that probably wasn’t it since Slick was amazing at everything.

Slick is the best character.

And huh, so monarchs running around. Seems weird they’d actually want these rings, though, wouldn’t that just make it very obvious and public (and inconvenient) if one of them was ever mad at the other? Do they realize what they’re getting into? Or is there some sort of benefit to the things when it’s done properly

Halloween Throwdown (PS (AD, PI, SS, DD, CD, HB))

“This is adorable,” Droog says. “I almost don’t want to beat your face in.”

Yes Droog speaks the truth.

Terrified Fury (DD (PI))

This is really, really far down the fanon rabbit hole. There’s no reason shadow magic would work like that and it certainly doesn’t seem to during the glimpse of it in canon, PI already has his own skills and weapons instead of being easy prey, Droog’s own reasoning doesn’t seem at all like him… It is a pretty good concept and execution, though.

SS (DD)
DD (SS, PI)

Oh, I already found everyone, it just takes me a while to buckle down and review the fics. Sorry for being so slow!

sorry hon, it’s just part of my parlance

              2. Farla says:

See, that’s totally different because it’s her doing it to me, not me doing it to her.

It’s like I’m a minor character in one of the books I read!

Well, to be fair, the two actions in consideration aren’t really all that comparable.  It would probably be possible to devise an ethical system in which keeping tabs on all of the fanfic posted about your favorite characters is creepy and being overly familiar with people you don’t know to express disdain isn’t.  It probably wouldn’t be a particularly *viable* ethical system, but it might at least be internally consistent.

True, but you just know if I did it, within a minute there’d be shouting about what a condescending puppy-eater I am.

              5. Ember says:

                 Yeah, probably.

On the other hand, no one’s gotten on your case yet specifically for addressing people as “hatefriend,” though I have seen people shaking their heads about the Vriska schtick in general.

              6. Farla says:

I think I mostly hatefriend at FFN people, don’t I? So probably they haven’t encountered it while I vriskaface in general.

                (How can anyone dislike vriskafacing????????)

              7. Ember says:

IDEK, I guess they’re all just loooooooosers!
