Matched Ch1

Now that I’ve found the way to fly, which direction should I go into the night? My wings aren’t white or feathered; they’re green, made of green silk, which shudders in the wind and bends when I move—first in a circle, then in a line, finally in a shape of my own invention. The black behind me doesn’t worry me; neither do the stars ahead.

Most of the opening lines I’ve seen so far have been good. This marks a stark departure from that.

Matched Coffee Break

From everything I heard about this book, I assumed the matching plot was the basic story that everything else was added to. I’m starting to suspect it wasn’t. The original seems to be some sort of Giver/Fahrenheit 451 mashup, and then the author was told to stick Ky in there.

One of the things fiction can do is hold up a mirror to society. There doesn’t seem to be any sign of that here. Nor is it just a look at another society for the sake of it – everything about this society invites comparison to our own, but only to congratulate us for being better than them.
