Okay dude, take a second and calm the hell down. I appreciate the editorial advise, but c’mon bro, it’s a FANFICTION for crying out loud! Of course there’s going to be mistakes!! |

Thank you for the review, but I don’t plan on changing the way I write anytime soon. I gave Miranda’s Houndoom the name “Sparky” because it is a common name for a pet dog, and the character had recieved and named these Pokemon at a young age. The official Pokemon websites and books capitalize the first letter of every Pokemon’s name, no matter if it belonged to somebody or not. I only described Swinub and Houndoom because 1) I was bored and 2) There could be readers who aren’t familiar with the Pokemon from Johto. The misuse of “it’s” was just a grammar mistake that I missed while revising, and I will fix later. I always describe my characters throughly so readers can get a good picture. I may take these things into suggestion later, but for now, my writing will stay the way it is. Thank you for the advice. |

Hey, I’d just like to thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and constructive review of my story. Honestly, a vast majority of the reviews I get are generic praise and “Good job, I love it” type stuff, so finding a rough in the diamonds, so to speak, is seriously refreshing. Thank you. To be honest, I actually wrote this a long time ago and felt like posting it after going through some of my old stuff, thinking everyone would love it like they do with everything else I write. In retrospect, this story does kinda suck. Someday I may actually take this down at some point and rewrite it with fewer plotholes and more relevant exposition, but for now I’ll leave it up while I continue with my main project. tl;dr Thanks for the constructive criticism. I may end up redoing this because I acknowledge how bad it |

Hello! Thank you for your critique, I really appreciate it. I did intend for it to be that they’re keeping people in as well as out, but looking through it again I can see I didn’t do a good job of implying it. I was really only theorizing as to why the gym is under renovations yet has not changed between D/P and Platinum…anyway, it might have been a good idea but wasn’t executed very well. Again, I very much appreciate your critique and will keep it in mind for next time. -Crowbar. |

Hi, I’m sorry if you didn’t like my story. The problem is that I was working on Microsoft word so it didn’t understand unless you put capital letters down. I will try and look at your comment and improve the next part but anyway thanks for leaving a comment. P.P.S OMG you so remind me of my English teacher, nah just kidding |

I really appreciate the constructive criticism, but some of the stuff you said doesn’t really make sense to me. First, you said that dialogue should be written as “Hello,” she said, but then you said that it shouldn’t be written as “Hello,” she said. It also would’ve been a bit more helpful if you told me where I made these mistakes in my story. Also, I’m aware about the whole using the same punctuation in thoughts. I’m not bad at English, I just make mistakes like every other human on the planet. I also fail to see how I *abused* epithets, so you if you could explain, I’d appreciate it. Otherwise, I’ll take what you said into consideration and ignore the hidden insult. thank you :) |

Is that so? Oops. Sorry, I haven’t read Pokémon fics in quite a while, and was somehow under the impression their names were always capitalised. I’ll keep that in mind from now on. Thanks for the review! I’ll try to cut down on the colons. :D |

Thank you for your critisizm. Just like the anime always was, the police are no where to be found. The character trusts her pokemon and if her pokemon trusts Ingo and Emmet, she will too. Pokemon sence emotions. I forget to put those parts in since I’m always writing this at school. I have some funky program for my laptop which always corrects my “its” “it’s.” I decided to have it so she has to pay for the pokecenters since it helped my write the story easier. Who in the right mind gives away food and places to stay for the night for FREE without it getting over crouded? I guess it was very lazy on my part that she basically forgot about what happened the night before on the train. I should of mentioned about the character being too proud to call the police and decides to brush the incident off. This is my first time ever making a story out of my free will and I appreciate it very much that you took time to review my story. I can tell you are quite experienced from the way you wrote your review, and again, I thank you. I shall be more careful with writing the story and I find out how to, I’ll try and fix the other chapters’ transitions, I just made my account 3 days ago, same with my story. |

Well i’m sorry if you don’t like my story. and ouch, harsh much. I’m not the greatest writter ever so this is all still very new to me. so don’t go bitting people’s heads off. i am happy to recieve advice but i don’t like being told that my names are bad or that certain things are not to your liking. Don’t like it, then don’t read it. it’s that simple. Trainer out!! :( |
| TheLegendaryKitty19 | Are you alright? |

You see like you have issues with bossing people around and thinking that everyone just loves you’re opinion. I don’t. You are very rude. If you don’t like my story, then get off it. You don’t belong here if you don’t like what’s here. I’m only in 8th grade English, so I couldn’t know any better. My teacher is not a grammar nazi like you. She does have a better adititude and vocabulary than you. And you do realize since I don’t have a laptop, I use my iPod’s note section to type all this…? So my iPod sometimes does stuff without me knowing, alright? So calm down. Nobody REALLY wants you’re opinion. If you’re just gonna nit-pick about the negative stuff in people’s stories, then get off of here. Reviews are NOT to mock or ridicule people, it’s to complement someone’s hard work and POLITELY give them advice to make a better story. If you’re insane enough, you will nazi this. |

One more thing with you’re nit-picking. My English teacher told me to do dialoge like that. “Hello,” she said with a grin. “How are you doing?” Because if you take out what’s not dialoge… Hello, how are you doing?” I saw this Japanese song title that had it that way. Are you gonna nazi them? 22 minutes ago I’m saying if you are not gonna give me POSITIVE constructive criticism, get off my account and leave me alone. Yeah, you may have better writing skills than me, but you obviously do not know you absolutely do not have the right cram the English language down my throat. I don’t like someone other than my English teacher to tell me what I should do in my writing and what I should not. Like I said, I’m in English 8A. I am not on here to show off my “fantastic writing skills” like you seem to be. I’m here to give people something to read in their bored times, and they don’t nessisarly (go all nazi on my iPod for not knowing what word that is) have to LIKE it. I happen to have a talent in the Fine Arts. I am a good artist, writing is my SECOND thing (if you wouldn’t stop nit-picking about every little thing that makes you explode and get mad). I’m on here to give people something to read and relate to. NOT to rub it in people’s faces that I’m a better writer than all of FanFiction and shove them grammar mistakes down their throats, just for my satisfaction. This is a place to write things, GOOD OR NOT. This is not some professional writing website where you get paid and all that goodie stuff, this is a way for people to express themselves and others will relate and not mock you for you’re likes, points of views on things, and opinions. And if you think you’re so good, why don’t you write a book and send it to a publisher? That would save us two a whole LOT of trouble. I don’t want you’re “opinion” and “constructive criticism”. Get off of my profile and stories or I’ll get you off myself. I hate people who find the negatives in life. Find the positive in every bad situation instead of complaining how bad you have it. You’d feel sorry if you heard mine. Let me drill this in your head. Write a darn book if you are SO good at the English language. I bet you’ll get you’re book back with proof reading marks, no matter how well you wrote it. And don’t tell me you’re too young because my friend set in a book to a publisher and they liked her story. So, if you like writing so much, then start making some money so you can make your own perfect writing website. “Where I drill grammar through your ignorant, thick skulls.” I have an A- in English, so back off. I’m an 8th grader. For all I know, you could be in college, still wasting your life on silly websites like these. I’m only on here in my spare time. Now, leave me alone. |

Thanks for the help! I’m not being sarcastic or anything either. Grammar has never been my strong point so I’ll try and fix up those mistakes in the future. I’m sorry my story doesn’t appeal to you and it’s random, but I’ve seen much worse. There are people who like my story so I’m going to continue with it, you just don’t have to read so if I have any more horrible mistakes it won’t bother you! Thanks again! :) |

I just have one question. Is it wrong to have four guys in the main group? I would think of it more as a preference issue rather than something that I would consider a problem. I haven’t done anything with them as of right now, but if I really do come off as someone who is just casting off the girls as one-dimensional characters, then I would be happy to take some constructive criticism. |
| FlatFive | re: Your review to Mind Poison |

Hi, thanks for your review! Your critique is very helpful, and I’ll get to correcting the grammar errors. I’ll get to fixing the quotes around the thought. What happened was I originally wrote this in third person, but then rewrote it to be in first person. I didn’t catch that the quotes around the thought is effectively useless. As for capitalizing Pokemon names, I’d say that is a more of a stylistic preference, because in the games, Pokemon names are always capitalized regardless if they are used as a proper noun or just referring to the species. I prefer the names to be capitalized since I’ve never seen it otherwise. Thanks again for the comments! |

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. I’m glad to get some constructive criticism; it really means a lot. I have plans to change all of the errors you’ve pointed out. However, I wasn’t sure what you meant by [So their pre-contact oral history is gone then.] in response to [The single most famous of these stories surprisingly does not detail hostilities between the Sinnohans and natives, but rather one friendly relationship that changed the lives of many.] Could you explain that to me? I’m sorry… I know I’m a bad author and I’m glad you gave me the critism. I really like writing and I feel I shouldn’t if I don’t know how… you’d probably agree. Again, I’m really sorry. If the story is really that bad I’ll just delete it. I’m in sixth grade so please don’t be so harsh with the grammer and things… this is only the second story I’ve ever tried writing (I’m telling the truth). If you want, just reply and you can ask Kayla to finish writing it… |
| maddogjean1 | re: Your review to The Guardians Rise |
|
I read some of your things on your page… I’m not saying I’ll delete my story but I appreciate you stating my mistakes. I was thinking about deleting any ways because I know I have bad grammer and I’m not exactly an A student when it comes that stuff. I’m better at poetry but I wanted to try something new. Not everyone likes the same things and again, I’m really sorry for not doing these things right. |
Also:
Since Pokemon first came out as a game, the capitalization does indeed come from there. Yes, they copyrighted things, but that doesn’t change that they did capitalize the terms. Just because we’re talking in-universe doesn’t mean those capitalizations go away. Would you also argue that the Force in Star Wars and Sands of Time from Prince of Persia are also incorrect spelling and anyone who writes them so are wrong? You’ve got many large canons, including the Pokemon’s, arguing against you here. |
You illustrate exactly why I’m so insistent about this point by your staggering ignorance in selecting your supposed counterexamples. You have absolutely no idea why anyone capitalizes or doesn’t, do you? What’s really going on here is you have no clue how it works and assume the same must be true for me, so how dare I act as if there’s some sort of rule involved and not just preference or blind following of authority. |
But yes, trademark is a different issue. Was the word ‘pokémon’ already taken? Were they, for some reason, prevented from using lower-case letters? If not, it’s such a different issue that it has absolutely no bearing on this. From what I’m seeing, the games were released in ’96 and the name “Pokemon, Ltd” was trademarked in 2000. How these are related at all is something you’ve yet to explain, since the games came out first and established these naming techniques (which the fanbase promptly ignored and started using their own for the sake of legibility) and the trademark is simply the legal ownership etc etc, not something that defines the grammar that was already laid down. Pokemon is a brand name created out of the Japanese brand Pocket Monsters. Both of these are capitalized, so I don’t see how bringing this up is a point on your side, and you haven’t explained how things being capitalized due to trademark makes it alright to uncapitalize them in fanfiction. |
Thank fuck this month is almost over. It’s not like people will stop desperately clinging to their own stupidity, but at least I won’t have to hear it.
“When people click on the link to my story, I want them to read it for the joy of reading it”
Ah so readers are the ones supposed to make an effort to be blind to mistakes and sueish characterisation. How did the idea that we all have a mistake/coherency-filter that can be turned on and off become so popular? Or is this the author’s way of saying that if we’re more picky than them on these things, the story wasn’t made for us?
“I only described Swinub and Houndoom because 1) I was bored”
Then why were they writing? And they seriously overestimate a reader’s memory if they think a description paragraph will allow the reader to visualise their character properly for the whole story. They also don’t get we really couldn’t care less what the MC looks like past skeleton details but that would mean the writer leaves it possible for the reader not to see their beloved characters exactly as they do…
Is it me or did the word ‘teacher’ and ‘nazi’ appear an insane amount of times here.
And still the belief the reviewer has a duty to the writer. There’s basic respect, and then there is excessive sugarcoating of reviews. Why should the reviewer put in more effort in their reviews than the writer did for his readers?
Wow, I’m actually getting angry at those budding writers after reading through your blog and I’m not even the one doing NaRe.
There seems to be the idea that there’s no issue of competing for readers. If the story is there and a reader clicks on it, of course the reader will get to the end and also return for any further chapters.
I’m thinking the teacher/nazi thing might mean I stumbled on a group of friends, that’s often behind people with very similar ways of talking about me.
One more thing with you’re nit-picking. My English teacher told me to do dialoge like that.
-faints-
Those messages over there…ugh, it’s literally three negative factors in one bundle. Age excuse, typical ‘people should only like my stories and I should hate those who want it to be something better’ concept and the fact that she uses other stuff (like ‘using an iPod or having a friend that has a good story) in attempt to prove you wrong. What is wrong with people these days…
At least there’s some sophisticated people up there. Perhaps there’s still hope!
Then again, maybe not.
(Oh and Farla, do I have to post at the Review Exchange as a placeholder or some sort? I don’t think we’re supposed to post something over there, but I did see a couple of posts within the thread. :) )
It’s really depressing, isn’t it? I understand that English teachers don’t necessarily teach grammar due to budget and stuff, but to be also teaching the kids that they should ignore all corrections because they’re already right…
I don’t think you’ll need to. I think everyone mentioned it was for the exchange, so I’ll just go over the reviews of the stories that are open and get everyone that way.
Thanks ^^
[Just like the anime always was, the police are no where to be found.]
…wat. No seriously, what. I mean, this guy did prove to be an idiot, but still.
I’m starting to wonder if maybe there’s some streamlined upload features with the mobile version of FFN. That would at least help explain why so much gets published from iWhatevers. Although, now I think on it, maybe these are kids writing in the car on the way to school or other things like that. The ones who cite that as part of their problem do sound a bit younger than the average, so possibly young enough to be unable to drive.
I am oddly pleased by the amount of effort Envy Her put into her PM. Pity she spelled psycho incorrectly. (Pretty sure autocorrect would pick that up, though. Bizarre.)
