Pokemon Author Replies, Part 3

In which we have what is possibly the best explanation for there being mistakes, literally being blind and unable to see them. I generally think of being a nonnative speaker as the best excuse given how horrible any nonEnglish anything I wrote would be, but that one definitely wins.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it.
Alrighty, first things first, I wrote this wanting to keep it as close to the original game as possible, however, I had a few ideas for things later on that would venture off from the original story a bit. So, yes, waking up was necessary to my story. I agree, it is overdone, but I’m not really looking to stand out or publish this. I just wrote it for fun.
Secondly, yes, I intend to capitalize every Pokemon. That’s how I roll. Most Pokemon merch, books and other media, capitalize the name of a Pokemon. I haven’t seen “charmander” without capitalization. I understand your concept. I would never capitalize “Deer”, it be stupid, but this is fiction. And frankly, to me, it looks nicer. But it’s whatever floats your boat.
Oh yay! Grammar! My worst enemy! I honestly do appreciate this one. I freaking suck at all that. I barely proofread this chapter myself, but I sure didn’t have anyone else proofread it.
Thank ya! I’ll apply this to my future writings!
Thanks, Farla, for your input, but as I said before, I’m staying true to the story, and you better bet I’ll even write in when they go to the Pokemon Center. Every. Time. :)

In all seriousness, I’m not interested in finishing this story right now. I have no motivation for it, nor the time to work on it. It was just a one shot I wrote 5 years ago, and I had hoped it would develop into something more. Maybe one day.
Thanks for reading!

What a great start…

(Hiding a little disappointment here…) Thanks for the advice! I’ll just tweak my stories to how you said and it should be better

Thanks!
Jan 8Virgil’s InfernoI’d like to thank you for your very well composed review. It’s quite embarrassing really, letting such sloppy capitalization mistakes escape my admittedly poor editorial technique. Your remark upon what turned you off of the story in question is a little troubling. The rambling was noted and done on purpose because it was meant to be a story that would often switch narrator and perspective. Thus I needed to distinguish the titular character’s. way of narrating. Nonetheless I’m beginning to wonder if this alienates some readers who don’t enjoy this particular style, as I’d hate to write page long foot notes dissecting jokes about Freudian psychology and historical figures.
In closing, thank you for your invaluable feedback. And best of luck in whatever endeavors you may find yourself currently working towards.

Thank you, I rushed this out, so it isn’t perfect. (or near my normal standards) Also, this is the PMD universe where 1 apple fills half of your stomach. 1 apple every day would keep you alive in that universe but not much more.

Again this is my first story, so I’m not that good at writing or plotting. But I agree that the first chapter doesn’t make any senses. I’ll fix it so it makes more sense. Thanks for the review!

re: Your review to No Place Like Hoenn Ch1 (Pokemon Fan Fiction)

Thank you for reviewing my story, first of all.

Secondly, the addition of Ch. 1 was not intentional and you are completely correct about that, though I had thought about possibly dividing the story up into three different parts so there would be some time passage between each one of the chapters instead of doing a bunch of filler chapters. It was originally a force of habit and I respect you informing me of that.

Thirdly, I apologize for my atrocious grammar and spelling. I haven’t really done a story on here before aside for one my girlfriend had repeatedly requested me to put up. I appreciate the input about proper capitalization especially because I was never quite sure of how to go about it with these stories. I find myself capitalizing things like the names of Pokemon because I am so used to them being that way in the games and shows because it was the name of the certain species, the same goes with Professor and Pokemon Master, because I thought of them as the name of certain titles and all of that.

Additionally, to reply to your comment about the last part of your review, you are completely correct. I had not thought of it in that way and after reading what you had said, I looked back at the story and have decided to revise the story and replace the story I had originally posted with my redrafted version.

Thank you for your feedback on my story. I will definitely remember it and I feel like this can help me moving forward with my future attempts at writing.

First of all, thanks for your opinion and constructive criticism.

To address the concern with the dialogue, if you didn’t know, I’m a blind person and I use a screen reader to read and write. Another thing is that when I was writing this story, my PC broke down and I had to use my cousin’s PC which didn’t have MS Word which usually spell checks everything. Though I know that it isn’t an excuse, I’m ashamed to admit it that in the flow of writing, I didn’t notice those mistakes and English isn’t my first language. But I assure you that I’ll try my best to remedy that in the future.

The second thing, I know that I could have just used the names of Ash, Brock and Misty but as it was just the introduction, I didn’t think it would be prudant to rush into the story without any description. Trust me, I received a lot of complaints about my lakh of description and “my rushing into things” in the original story. Moreover it added some variety in the story. It gets a bit boring to always read Ash, Misty and Brock.

The lakh of capitalization for Pokémon here and there – The same reason as before; the flow of writing and lakh of spellcheck. It’s the same with “Professor Elm”. But I promise that I’ll proofread the chapter many more times before posting it.

The accessive description of Pokémon – As I received many complaints about my lakh of description, I thought that a little description wouldn’t hurt anyone. Though I understand how you feel; I myself often skip the descriptions if I’m annoyed. It’s probably better that I followed your suggestion. But what do you think about my description of Larvitar? Was it better if I described some of its features spread out in different paragraphs and interactions? Sorry but I think I can’t avoid all of the descriptions but I’ll try to tone it down. Hope you’ll not get upset and stop reading the story.

The battle being pointless – I beg your pardon. I think that it was a great way to show Ash’s battling skills and that of Misty. More importantly, it showed that Misty had gotten stronger than she was in the anime by travelling with this fic’s Ash Ketchum. And it was a training session for the Silver Conference. I also needed a way to show Dragonite’s power as it’s going to be the only training session that I’m going to write before the Silver Conference. Another reason is that Dragonite is going to face stronger opponents in the future and so that people doesn’t say “Hey, how did Dragonite suddenly become super strong all of a sudden?” Besides, many battles in the anime are pointless and don’t have any reason. I’m sorry that you found it disappointing.

I hope I covered all of your concerns and you won’t stop reading this story. Thanks again for your review and voicing your concerns. I really appreciate it.

?? uh, I might have messed up one quotation, but that’s it lol. I get that you’re trying to help, but you come off as a dick with nothing to contribute. I’ve gone through the story and I capitalized everything. Next time, try to comment on the actual story and give one like of “correction”. I get that you’ve written stuff on this site for like ten years, but no one wants to hear you spout off on a well formatted/written story. thank you :)

Hi there!
Jan 9Kindness and ExuberanceI just wanted to say thanks for reviewing my story! Your feedback is really useful and constructive.

So here’s today’s weird note to end on – thanks to the magic of stats pages, I know that over on tumblr they’ve mourning their inability to delete the review and also seem to be under the delusion I thought their fic was okay but choose to only mention the tiny things I could complain about, which is particularly funny given they did get one of those reviews about their actual story content that everyone whines I don’t give.

But … what’s frustrating is, I feel like the writer of the review didn’t actually hate it, but had a few issues. The review, though, doesn’t actually mention any positives in particular, and goes into great detail on the negatives.

    I’m confused.

“Fair enough,” I thought. “I’ll take the advice on board and –

What I wanted to do was delete the review. I feel like it could put readers off reading it, and also, the reviewer has a reputation for being incredibly harsh and negative. So I don’t feel it’s a fair review either way.

    Now I’m even more confused!

    1. Farla says:

I will say that they seem to have started under the impression you MUST OBEY any non-flame AND BE GRATEFUL PEON, so this may be them struggling with the resulting dissonance.

  2. actonthat says:

Oh no! Not leaving more reviews! How will you survive??

TBH I wonder if a good amount of these people don’t actually attempt to leave “nice” crit, only to discover that niceness wasn’t the issue before quietly disappearing. On the right day, one review for the wrong person may be all it takes for them to realize.

    Also:

Just swung by their profile to look at their own fics and yep, they’re a joke. Troll account.

I think someone needs to explain to this person what a troll is, because it’s definitely not 10 years of on-site experience and hundreds of fics. It’s literally the exact opposite.

    1. Farla says:

      How will you survive??

I won’t! I’ll shrivel up and die and they will have saved the entire world from me! Unless they don’t review, in which case my continued existence and every single author I make cry (ie, every one I review) should be blamed entirely on them.

I think someone needs to explain to this person what a troll is, because it’s definitely not 10 years of on-site experience and hundreds of fics. It’s literally the exact opposite.

So that threw me but then I wondered, what if they just saw the part where I have a ton of fics and assumed only someone spamming trollfic could churn out so many? Maybe having 100+ works wraps back around to people assuming you haven’t actually written anything. They seem to also be assuming I don’t know anything about Pokemon either and just picked them because I cast kitten entrails to determine which fandom I harass.

  3. Cappii says:

I really don’t get why the fandom over on Tumblr thinks you’re a troll. I mean, yes, you don’t sugarcoat when you think someone’s fic is terrible, and I get why people would get upset for that, but you’re still giving decent/correct advice!

There is a ridiculous crowd mentality surrounding some of the more popular blogs. The big names are all “lol she’s just trolling how can my fic be bad I’m an ENGLISH TEACHER I MUST BE RIGHT”, and no one wants to openly disagree. All of my anon messages saying hey maybe actually listen to critique have been ignored, too.

Also part of the whole “plan” to “get back” at you apparently involves politely asking you to review one of the big names’ popular fics? Because they think you won’t find anything wrong with it?? But even if you do they’re just going to mock your trolling anyway??? I’m really confused as to what they’re trying to accomplish.

    1. Farla says:

The same reason as always: we disagree. Since disagreement doesn’t really exist, I must agree with all their positions and beliefs, it’s just that I’m evil so I’m doing the opposite on purpose.

Don’t bug them with messages, though. If they don’t want to listen they don’t want to listen, and trying to make people just causes them to dig in their heels harder. They’ll calm down eventually and maybe look at the review with fresh eyes then.

I’m really confused as to what they’re trying to accomplish.

They’re hurt I didn’t like their story, and if they can all agree everything I said is always wrong and I’m just pretending not to like things, they’ll feel better. They’ll keep doing this while totally oblivious to the fact I’m doing a review month precisely so people don’t feel singled out and like their story is uniquely horrible.

  4. Oliver says:

I want to remark on the blind writers comment.
I use a text to speech program to listen to most things online, I can speedread something serious with paper and its unbearably boring that I can’t online. Listening to stuff being read is really slow, but I can play grindy games and knit. I set it bellow normal talking speed just so the roboty quality doesn’t get as confusing,
Anyway they’re awesome, but pronunciation is so stiff that it turns really wacky with spelling errors. Its not a reason not to notice them, but it must be so slow to edit that way so they have some of my sympathy just as someone else who loves the crap out of reading programs.

He’s got a ton of reviews. His description is too boring for me to get through, but it actually reads like the anime or the kids first chapter book adaptions of it. Kinda really impressed.
