One author chose to respond to me with a review to their own story for some reason.

You could not just reply to my review like a normal person because…?
I responded just fine. A normal probably would of said the same.
I mean you chose to review your own story instead of using the reply feature. That’s a little weird.Jun 30N1ghtstrike the Umbreon

Thanks. No, you’re not missing anything. I only call it I because it is the first one! Thanks for the advice.

Thank you for the tips, I appreciate it. I will be working on my grins and laughter and whatnot within the story. I’ll look into this beta reader as well. Though, I’m not an expert. So thank you for pointing this out to me. .
It’s not really a chapter either. It’s a prologue, thus the reason it says “Prologue.” It’s a mystery. A mystery to the readers like, why is this pokémon going after that pokémon? I usually call them mystery shorts. It also gives the reader a way to explore with their own ideas such as, “okay. He went after he because of such and such reason.” That’s the way I look at it. It’s not a chapter. More of a mystery short and prologue. Trust me. I know how to write chapters. :p But thank you.
Prologues are often longer than regular chapters, actually. They’re self-contained stories that set up the main story. In a published novel, maybe a prologue of that length would be fine… but in fanfiction, you have stiff competition for your readers’ attention. It’s best to give them a meaty introduction right out of the gate; otherwise, they might just move on and forget your story.

Hi there! Thank you for the review, I really appreciate it. I’ve gone ahead and made some changes to errors you pointed out and switched Phil’s reaction to the cold around so he notices that first (you’re right, it’s more realistic). As for the lack of Pokemon? Yeah, that’ll be addressed in the story and there will be some Pokemon soon! :)
DarkMoonZoroarkYou may have been trying to “help” him but that is his first story so cut him some slack Mr. Abandoned my first story. You definitely seem to know your grammar and proper writing but not everyone has to follow that to perfection. You went as far as to tell him to use tricks that would depend on writing style from what I’ve seen on this site so if you are trying to help him, give him suggestions rather than telling him how to write.
I don’t even know who you’re talking about. Whoever they are, they’re perfectly capable of talking to me themselves.
That slightly mentioned it in their story in the author note of the next chapter but I felt I should tell you since if you do this a lot then maybe you should think about changing it to suggesting and not forcing “how you are supposed to write” on them.Jul 2
Don’t be so melodramatic. You make it sound like I’m demanding changes at gunpoint.
Allow me to let you in on a little secret: I have no power over authors. Absolutely none. Whether they follow my advice or not is totally, 100% up to them. I can’t do anything about this. You want to stick it to the mean reviewer? Ignore me. Don’t like, don’t read. If you block me you’ll never have to see me again. There are far too many fics out there for me to waste time harassing one person. But I’m not going to stop helping people just because a few people choose to take that option.
I know you are trying to help and I was saying I think it would get across better making it sound more like suggesting. They may not take some of the info due to it sounding forceful so if you changed the format a bit I think it would help people more. I myself was harsh earlier because I took the feeling of what reading your reply on a story I made would have felt like. Maybe it needs encouragement to make it positive to balance pointing out the errors. You know how to write great and I’m not nearly at the level so keep up the reviewing but consider balancing out the overall feel of the reviewJul 2
[I think it would get across better making it sound more like suggesting.]
That is always what I do. Softballing it any further risks people thinking I’m not serious and nothing I say is a big deal so everyone can ignore me.
Look, if you have an opinion on how reviewing should be done, try it yourself and show me your results. Almost no one reviews anymore; more often than not mine is the only review on a story. Maybe if there was a healthier culture of criticism I wouldn’t have to be so negative.
No response, sadly. I really do hope someone takes me up on this eventually.

Thanks for your review :) thanks for the minor corrections in grammar and stuff, verb tenses are awful and no matter how many GCSEs I have they’ll always be a weak point. I’ve just updated the document and I’ll put up the revised version soon.
I’m going to have to disagree with the whole capitalising thing, because in the games they definitely capitalise Pokémon and also names of them, for wild Pokémon and such. And I know they’re not entirely grammatically perfect (a move hitting ‘2 time(s)’ being my biggest nitpick), but I’m going to take their word on this one even though you make a very good point.
I’ll also have to disagree with it not being anything to do with Pokémon. It is an AU, so technically anything is possible. I understand that N seems out of character, but it’s a different circumstance and a vastly different upbringing for him. Personally I never found N to be a particularly diplomatic character and he wasn’t entirely a pacifist either, he’s more curious and very, very passionate about the treatment of Pokémon.
As it’s an AU, it can happen honestly, but I’ve thought a little on how to make it fit. And I don’t know about you, but all the myths and legends and stuff with Pokémon seem pretty fantasy to me!

[in the games]
The games also capitalize lots of other things that definitely shouldn’t be capitalized by conventional grammar rules. This is because, in a video game, it’s helpful to highlight important items and information by capitalizing it, because capitalization makes words stand out. (Note that, in the earlier games, pokemon and items were written in ALL CAPS, and sometimes colored, to make them even more distinctive.) For more information, I would advise you read this thread: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread
[It is an AU, so technically anything is possible.]
Not exactly. If an AU changes so many things that you could publish the story as original fiction if you filed off the serial numbers, it’s original fiction inspired by something else, not fanfiction. And it’s really annoying to have to sift through original fiction when you are searching for fanfiction on a site exclusively devoted to hosting fanfiction. Archive of Our Own and FictionPress have places to host original fiction, but FFN is very strict about this.
Jul 7I understand where you’re coming from with capitalisation, but we’ll have to agree to disagree because I’m not intending changing it to something I know many people would consider outright wrong. I’m not asking you to change your view either. This is fanfiction. It will become clearer in later chapters once the setting involves moving around and there are a few more characters, but this definitely takes place in Unova and will later have more Pokémon in it and more characters who exist in Unova, specifically Touya, Cheren and Bianca. Probably some Professor(s) Juniper, too. This is a piece of fiction inspired by Pokémon, using ideas from European mythology as a basis for an AU.

hey i’m new. dont judge and i do stuff the way i like. and i have other stories that will come and idk what ppl think. think what you want. that’s all i have to say.
The first bunch of responses are in white. The message outside the boxes is also white.
Regarding contents, I have no idea why people have no idea what a prologue is. What it isn’t is an excuse to publish a chunk of text that has no meaning and leads nowhere.
Okay, I think I’ve figured out what’s going on. For some reason, the first paragraph break in PMs tends to get deleted, and because WordPress doesn’t let HTML span multiple paragraphs, this screws up the text color formatting. Nothing I do can make the line breaks reliably stick. I doubt I’ll be able to fix this short of manually adding br tags, which I am not doing. Farla, help?
