[25] The Other Pokereviews, Part 42

Featuring one of those “realistic” fics that spends ages explaining how the Australian military chose to genetically engineer an umbreon as an infiltrator because big cats are stealthy.

Also, “In the city of Rustboro, society is changing alarmingly. Humans and Pokémon walk in the same streets and drink at the same bars. Poké Ball sales are at an all-time low. Some Pokémon are even joining the city’s politicians. Matters are not helped, however, by the rise of a new terrorist Team, hell-bent on fully integrating Pokémon into human society…”

You should separate your author notes with a horizontal line; otherwise, they look like part of the story.

This is jarring; it’s better to use generalized scene transitions. Time and place should be clear from context or narration.

[“Well we’re on the coast of the mainland, we have to cross this water,” she made a gesture towards their left,” And then we’ll reach the island.”]

You’re generally writing dialogue correctly, but when you break up a sentence of dialogue with a non-speaking verbs, you need different punctuation than commas, as the narration is a separate sentence from the dialogue. Dashes or ellipses are often used, so a more accurate form here would be [“Well we’re on the coast of the mainland, we have to cross this water–” She made a gesture towards their left. “–and then we’ll reach the island.”]

[“There are three ways to get to Quake Island, the ferry, the normal overhead bridge and then the underground tunnel,” she pointed to the nearing entrance]

You also used a comma instead of a period for the dialogue here.

[and even flight the elite four and champion]

I can’t parse this. I think you lost track of this sentence somewhere.

[‘If these people get accepted, it’s because they deserve it. Dammit pops you’re making me feel inferior here.’]

Using quotes, even single quotes, for thoughts is confusing, because it makes it look like characters are talking out loud.

[Adelaide says]

The rest of the story is in past tense, so this should be as well.

You’re having quite a number of issues with commas, which makes the story hard to follow. I would recommend reading up on proper comma usage and/or getting a beta reader to help you.

I appreciate that you’re not capitalizing pokemon.

[Now this is where there are a lot of problems. There are many common pokemon that are overused. Those are:

Lucario and Rioulu

The entire Ralts line

Eevee and eeveelutions (you can select one, but it’s better if you don’t)

Starters (keep them to a minimum, one per person)

So I’ve seen many other writers use this method and I think it’s pretty good.]

It isn’t. There can be legitimate reasons for using overused pokemon, and even characters whose story depends on them in some way. You should judge on a case-by-case basis rather than locking off certain options outright. It’s also much, much more helpful to explain exactly what power level you want instead of just saying “no overpowered teams”, as that’s extremely vague and subjective.

You’re formatting dialogue incorrectly. Dialogue is written as [“Hello,” she said] or [“Hello!” she said], never [“Hello.” She said] or [“Hello”, she said] or [“Hello” she said]. This is because dialogue and speech tags are considered to be part of the same sentence, so they have to flow together. The only exception to this is if the next sentence doesn’t contain a speech verb. In that case, the second part <i>is</i> considered a separate sentence, so it’s written as [“Hello.” She grinned], never [“Hello,” she grinned]. Note that something isn’t a speech verb just because it’s a sound you make with your mouth, so generally stuff like “laughed” or “giggled” is in the second category. (“Speak” is also not a speech verb.) Furthermore, if you’re breaking up two complete sentences it’s [“Hi,” she said. “This is it.”] not [“Hi,” she said, “this is it.”] or [“Hi,” she said “this is it.”] And if you’re breaking up a sentence in the middle, it’s [“Hi. This,” she said, “is it.”] The same punctuation and capitalization rules apply to thoughts, except you don’t use quotation marks (or single quotes) with thoughts. This is because quotation marks for thoughts make it look like your characters are talking out loud, which is confusing to the reader.

[“We need a mind essentially, at the moment our methods cannot fabricate a consciousness. It still remains a mystery to us. The specimens we have created so far have been fully workable yet lifeless husks of flesh.]

That is nonsense. Consciousness is physical. We can take a knife and cut it out of people. If they can create brains they can create conscious beings. The only way this makes sense is if you’re mixing magic with this and there’s going to be a twist later that souls are important somehow, but it’s a really bad idea to mix magic with science after spending an entire chapter doing nothing but infodumping about the science.

[“We initially went for something like a panther or large cat. We figured that those animals are characteristically built for stealth, infiltration etcetera.]

Good lord they’re idiots. Big cats aren’t stealthy, they’re predators. Were there no biologists on their biology team?

[“Not exactly, see these abilities were embedded into sort of, tissue emitters in the skin of the creature, placed evenly along the body it allowed for a 360 degree ‘psychic’ 6th sense of sorts. It worked, at least from what we can tell, the problem is this tissue glows a hot yellow-white while stimulated.”]

But all their test subjects were mindless, remember? How does a mindless being activate psychic powers?

[“The problem is only while the tissue is stimulated as I said, and this is a side-effect we simply cannot mask up.]

Why can’t they cover it with a layer of non-psychic skin?

[So we started thinking.” Gould again turned to Carpenter. He looked at him briefly, then returned to my gaze. “We started looking into creatures of myth and fiction, stealthy creatures with ‘glowing tissue and telekinetic abilities.’ There was a pretty clear winner.” Carpenter cleared his throat and took over.

“Pokémon national dex entry number one-hundred and ninety seven, also known as Umbreon.” Carpenter’s face was satisfied.

“Umbreon” I responded with amusement. This couldn’t be serious.

“It worked out quite well actually, the special tissue likes to cycle electro-chemical signals around itself to continue working, like a ring. Umbreon literally has glowing, yellow rings. Perfect”]

This is nonsensical on so many levels. If the trait is a problem why are they looking for designs that emphasize that trait? Even if they did, why would they think a stylized fictional design that doesn’t have to adhere to real physical constraints would be a good idea? Even if they did, why would they pick the glass cannon melee fighter with no opposable thumbs from a video game where everything has to be arbitrarily balanced? This is absolutely ridiculous. Try harder.

(Also for Heaven’s sake AN INSECT. YOU WANT AN INSECT. Insects are incredibly strong for their size, can get into small crannies, can fly, and nobody will pay them a second glance even if they glow because real insects do that and even weirder stuff. How did they miss such an obvious solution.)

Also, from where I’m standing this doesn’t look like Pokemon fanfic, it looks like original fiction with references to Pokemon; a crossover at best. This should be posted on Archive of Our Own. And in general, you shouldn’t be spending so much time on exposition in the first place. This chapter is incredibly dry and dull because you spend all your time giving nonsensical explanations for things that don’t need to be explained rather than getting straight to the plot. Focus on what’s actually important and what story you actually want to tell.

I appreciate this, but it doesn’t address the greater problem, which is that pokemon just aren’t suited to high school slice-of-life stories to begin with. And, honestly, saying they’re quadrupeds (and are therefore unable to use tools) just makes it all the stranger why they have culture and architecture just like ours.

You want “over time”, two words.

[There are two groups in the world. The first is the “regular” or “good” Pokémon. They go to work, get paid and live relatively good lives. They make up most of the world. But there is a region filled with Pokémon that have been treated harshly for generations. The are known as the “Hidiums”; called this because they were dubbed hideous by those in power.

Many decades, possibly centuries ago all Pokémon species were equal. But soon everyone became obsessed with beauty. A war broke out between the species deemed ugly and those that were not. This is where the term “Hidium” was coined to represent those seen as too physical unappealing to be in society. Sadly, the unattractive Pokémon were severely outnumbered and had no choice but to surrender. At first, they were enslaved. They were forced into hard labor and were beaten and sometimes even raped. But soon the “beautiful” Pokémon grew tired of looked at the horrendous faces of their slaves. Instead, they were all exiled to a region with abandoned towns and few resources. You really, really shouldn’t combine multiple POVs with first-person perspective. It’s extremely hard to keep track of characters that way.

Likewise, it’s really confusing to feature multiple POVs in the same chapter. I have no clue what’s going on, what the overall plot is supposed to be, or why I should care about all these characters who have only appeared for like one page each.

Overall, this doesn’t read like Pokemon fanfic at all. You’ve designed a very detailed world it looks like, but it’s one that has nothing to do with any canon setting, and your pokemon characters are all acting like humans with magic powers rather than anything like the pokemon in PMD, especially given that they’re acting in very human ways with all the slavery and feudalism stuff. I think you’d be better off publishing this as original fiction.

I appreciate that you’re not capitalizing pokemon.

[the fair-skinned lady’s hair flew in the sea breeze as she looked down at her infant, now on his way to leave the region and pursue a dream of his.]

This doesn’t quite work – “infant” isn’t generalizeable in the same way “child” is. When people say “infant”, they mean a literal baby.

[“You know why I’m leaving, mom!”]

When a title (such as “mom” or “dad”) is used in place of a name, it’s capitalized like one.

You’re overusing unusual speech verbs. Don’t be afraid to use said; lovely word, won’t bite, usually more fitting than whatever trendy verb you’re using in its place. You may have heard to avoid said because it’s so bland and boring, but that’s actually its greatest strength. Nonstandard speech verbs stick out; they’re used for emphasis, when how something is said is important to the story and you want the reader to stop and take notice. If you use that emphasis for every single line, the reader will become oversaturated, lessening the impact when you actually do want emphasis on a speech tag.

Because when your cause is doing very well and continually making progress, committing terrorist acts in support of it makes perfect sense, as evidenced by all the pro-same-sex-marriage bombings recently committed in the USA.

There can be many legitimate reasons for using overused pokemon

With that in mind, personally, I do like that the author is at least least aware of the fact that there is very little team variety in pokemon fanfiction, and doing something to avoid it in his own. I think it’s better to have this rule and break it when appropriate (just look at Red’s party list in Gen 2- pikachu, lapras, snorlax, charizard, blastoise, and venusaur- which somehow manages to remain impressive looking despite the fact you’ve probably got a lugia or ho-oh and one of the three legendary beasts in your party when fighting him) than to put another yet another drop in the ocean of trainers who start with a ralts and a end up with a garchomp, lucario, gardevoir, and one of the eevee evolutions introduced after gen 1 by chapter 3.

But on that note, I have a question that I can only ask someone who has read all the pokemon fanfiction: How common is it to see raichu in the hands of pokemon fanfiction protagonists? Pikachu sounds like it’d be an obvious common choice (or at least that it was, long ago before things like ralts and lucario), but I’ve always preferred raichu and even as a kid thought that the way Ash beat Lt. Surge was bullshit. In fact, it’s probably one of my favourite pokemon, but it’s always seemed to get the short end of the stick in the pokemon fandom. Normal type moves are not that huge a deal on a raichu, and even if it was, a smart person would avoid the problem by merely evolving it immediately after it gets the last normal-type move you want it to have. You don’t have to evolve it immediately like Lt. Surge did.

Incidentally, while writing this, I looked up Lt. Surge’s raichu in the games. In R/B, at level 24, it only has thundershock, thunderbolt, and growl. In yellow, where it’s his only pokemon because its based on the anime version of the fight, at level 28, Lt. Surge’s raichu has… thunderbolt, mega punch, mega kick, and growl. And in G/S, at level 44, Lt. Surge’s raichu has thunderbolt, thunder wave, thunder, and quick attack (which it also has in FR/LG and HG/SS)!

But, according to bulbapedia, raichu has both an attack and special attack of 90 (except Alolan ones, which have Atk 85 and Sp.Atk 95), but gets STAB with only its electric moves, and not its normal ones. The speed of quick attack can be useful, but please, once you have every normal move you want on it (plus any TMs pikachu can use but raichu can’t) evolve your pikachu.

    Your characters deserve actual names.

What kind of names do you suggest? It’d seem even weirder to have a shinx named Rebecca than a shinx named Shinx.

With what, the opposable thumbs they don’t have?

That doesn’t stop raccoons. While I don’t know what species of pokemon is being specifically referred to in this quote, most animals that can use their hands/front paws for grasping lack any sort of opposable thumbs. The human hand is a unique thing in the animal kingdom. Just compare them to the far less dexterous hands of other primates. So the next time someone tells you to worry about chimp with guns, just remind them that the gun is so incredibly specific to the ergonomics of a human’s hand that the chimp would probably have an easier time ripping you apart bare-handed.

This is nonsense. Consciousness is physical.

Maybe they meant it to mean that, while they’re capable of creating life that lives, they’re unable to make it any more aware of its surroundings than something in a persistent vegetative state? That’s what the “fully workable yet lifeless husks” line seems to imply (though it was a pretty terrible wordchoice to say “lifeless” when they’re biologically alive but unaware of self or surroundings).

Why can’t they cover it with a layer of non-psychic skin?

While I’m sure the author has a plausible reason like “the psychic-nodes would pick up the second skin” (ecolocation isn’t very useful when you do it from inside a box, after all!), I’m equally sure the reason is because the author thought having a bunch of nodes glowing white hot all over a psychic thing’s body is cool imagery. He could’ve tried to make it a bit less tailor made for umbreon, though.

    also known as Umbreon

Do you think this line is supposed to sound like “Ursus americanus, also known as the black bear”? It just doesn’t sound like something even a pokemon researcher would say. Pokemon already have unified names so there’s no need for scientific nomenclature like what real biologists use.

You really don’t need to literally start at the beginning of the planet

And here I thought I had the problem of a lot of unneeded chaff at the beginning of my narratives. While it can be hard to find where to start a mostly slice of life story (when does the “plot” start?), I don’t think I’ve ever started this far before the part where things happen.

This is a visual art convention that doesn’t work in prose

… Do you consider the use of ellipses such as the one at the beginning of this sentence, used to indicate hesitation in speech, a valid prose convention? Or, in that same vein, using tildes at the end of a sentence to indicate a sing-song quality to the speaker’s voice~? Is it just wrong to use a tilde like that in formal writing, acceptable in fanfiction but you draw the line at doing it in published works, or something like that?

    What.

What, you wouldn’t want gross grimer or golbat getting in the way of all of them sexy lucario and gardevoir, do you?

Ash and friends find a strange Pikachu called Liam who claims to be from another universe where Pokemon is only a video game

Then why does that universe have pikachu running around? Seriously, is this an important plot point and I’m super clever for immediately spotting the obvious contradiction in the story, or did the author invalidate his entire premise in the summary? Are we going to find out that Liam is actually a pikachu that used to be a piece of data inside a video game and then somehow escaped and became a real pikachu by coming to the Pokemon World? How can there be a pikachu from another universe where pikachu are fictional?

No, this is literature, not a TV show.

You’ve often said that most fanfiction seems to be written by people who watch far more TV than they read books but I’ve never seen something this egregious in storytelling, possibly ever. This implies that a person, who has presumably read at least one book in school, hasn’t realized that the narration of a story can just float in between dialogue, and that it doesn’t need to be dialogue in its own right. Even in the novelizations of pokemon meant for young readers, the regular literary narration takes over the role of the narrator of an episode of pokemon. This fanfiction is written more like it was describing a TV show than a novelization of a TV show.

I believe it was an eeveelution. So even if they can grasp something, they couldn’t hold it since they need all four legs to walk.

… Do you consider the use of ellipses such as the one at the beginning of this sentence, used to indicate hesitation in speech, a valid prose convention?

Yes. Whenever I use that copypasta, it’s in response to stuff like characters literally saying “…” and nothing else.

      1. CrazyEd says:

I believe it was an eeveelution

If that’s the specific case, fair enough, but in general, a lack of truly opposable thumbs doesn’t mean its impossible to carry things. Of course a flareon shouldn’t be able to carry things in its paws (I suppose it might be able to carry things in its mouth but I highly doubt that’s what was being presented in the fanfiction), but a polywrath shouldn’t have much trouble carrying a bag or opening a door despite its handicap (hah) in the fingers department. I can’t recall off the top of my head, but I seem to recall its thumb being a rudimentary nub at best (but a lot of animals that can grasp things basically do just have a little nub they can press things against with their other fingers instead of a true thumb) and lacking any other fingers entirely. I’m not sure if you’re actually looking at it on a pokemon-by-pokemon basis and I just misread or didn’t have enough info or something, but this seems like it could be one of those things where a defensive author could totally go “X has such-and-such paws and those should totally be capable of carrying a backpack even if they can’t do fine manipulations like writing, ergo, your entire review is invalid” if you’re not careful at which pokemon you level the thumbs copypasta at. Especially since I imagine you already get a lot of “I bet you didn’t even really read it because your entire review is just a bunch of pre-written copypasta” responses already.

        that copypasta

Yeah, I get you, that’s totally not something that should happen in a purely textual medium. It just made me wonder what you had to say about the hesitating ellipsis and tildes as punctuation because, so far as I know, neither of them are generally allowed in published books. I might’ve seen elipses used like that before but I’m certain I’ve never seen a tilde used no matter how songlike a character’s voice was described. I didn’t have a question about the specific example you used that copypasta to proofread, it just made me think of a somwhat related issue, that’s all.

        1. Mini-Farla says:

          1. CrazyEd says:

Probably. Honestly, I was just trying my best to not make my response sound condescending towards you. I kinda felt like I was reviewing your review when making my last response, but at that point, I couldn’t just not respond and leave it at that. That probably would’ve felt worse than actually writing up that reply did.

This is for SYOC, though, so there’s no breaking it when appropriate, just a blanket ban on any character concept that relates to those pokemon. On the other hand, it’s SYOC, so we can be reasonably sure no one actually has any connection between their character and their character’s team.

      1. CrazyEd says:

Hm, is it really, now? Well, if that’s the case… hopefully, the author will at least keep these things in mind when filling out the teams for the characters he creates for the story himself? Or maybe he knows how bad SYOC characters can get and doesn’t want to go through the awkwardness of having to reject someone’s character whose personality can be summed up with “owns a shiny lucario”?
