WWZ – ARMAGH, IRELAND

[While not a Catholic himself, Philip Adler has joined the throngs of visitors to the pope’s wartime refuge. “My wife is Bavarian,” he explains in the bar of our hotel. “She had to make the pilgrimage to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.”

But we don’t get an interview with the wife, because she is a female and being interviewed is for men!!!

The guy is actually German and our narrator explains it’s pure chance they met.

Hamburg was heavily infested. They were in the streets, in the buildings, pouring out of the Neuer Elbtunnel. We’d tried to blockade it with civilian vehicles, but they were squirming through any open space like bloated, bloody worms. Refugees were also all over. They’d come from as far away as Saxony, thinking they could escape by sea. The ships were long gone, the port was a mess. We had over a thousand trapped at the Reynolds Aluminiumwerk and at least triple that at the Eurokai terminal. No food, no clean water, just waiting to be rescued with the dead swarming outside, and I don’t know how many infected inside.
The harbor was choked with corpses, but corpses that were still moving. We’d blasted them into the harbor with antiriot water cannons; it saved ammo and it helped to keep the streets clear. It was a good idea, until the pressure in the hydrants died.

Once again, the book delivers quality scenes. This sounds like it’d fit well into Left4Dead or something – massive numbers of people turning too fast and ending up overwhelming everything by sheer numbers.

How this happened with the whole bite and wait several days to turn business in this book is far less clear. (more…)

Beauty Queens

This is a book about a bunch of beauty queens whose plane crashes on an island that was supposedly good. It is by the “gypsies speak Romanian right?” author.

It is actually a cute book that said a bunch of nice, thoughtful things about race and gender and family and a bunch of very mean things about corporations.

I am confused too but it’s a thing I didn’t hate so I thought I should share. (more…)

Dresden File Fool Moon Ch15

So there I was being strangled by a ranting, half-naked madman in the middle of the woods, with a she-werewolf dangling from a rope snare somewhere nearby.

So yeah, today Harry’s back to making a big point of the fact the nonhuman monster has tits. We actually don’t even have any evidence this is a “she” at all given he’s just worked out Tera is a shapeshifter, but Tera has a female human body and the part where the brain in that is some monster from the Nevernever doesn’t matter, thus “she-werewolf”. UnWholly Ch4 Parents

Well, our three new characters introduced, we reach Part 2: Whollies

Then we do the thing where the writer puts in some actual news that either inspired him or just fits with the thing he wants to hammer in, and it’s the thing about how a state’s law about abandoning babies at hospitals made some people drop off older kids, haha parents suck right?

Well, no. (more…)

Dresden Files Fool Moon Ch18

I tried to make my stunned body respond, to get to my feet, to unleash every ounce of magic at my command to protect Murphy, and to hell with the consequences.

That’s not right.

It’s wholly understandable for someone to care more about people they know than people they don’t but to act upon that is a moral failing of ours. Everyone should matter. And the closer you get to being a superhero, the more important that becomes.

The man who was just murdered has better claim to heroism here – he went toward the people screaming for help, he fought back against the monster that then came after him, and he hit the alarm as teeth tore through him. Harry just stood and watched. (more…)

Unwholly Ch5 Connor

And now, Connor. Fucking Connor.

The best part of these missions is the look on the parents’ faces when they realize that the tables have been turned. How their eyes dart down toward the tranq gun aimed at them, suddenly realizing that their unwind order is now nothing but a piece of paper.

And we see how we have now officially left any hope of decent characterization behind. It is Connor. They are adults. (more…)
