Thanks for your review! And a special thanks for pointing out those typos. I’ll get them fixed.
I’ll let everything else that has been written stand as it is, but there was one detail in your review that really confused me. Was there something besides Jen’s aunt living there that gave you the impression Jen had been to Cinnabar before? If there was, that’s my bad and something I need to fix. If it was just her aunt, I’m guessing some kinda cultural difference might be at play (i.e. I haven’t visited all my aunts and uncles, but maybe you have), in which case it’s probably fine as it is.

Thank you so much for leaving such a long comment! No-one else seems to have liked this story, so I’m glad you did (I think?)
I can’t actually say much else at the moment, because these drabbles are actually a prequel to a new story I’m writing now. It’s going to be a lot longer and from Artemis’ point of view. I hope you read that too when it’s done. :)

Thank you so much for leaving a review!
Oh yes, its weird. Get used to saying that a lot with this story!
Yes, its weird to have regular animals alongside Pokemon, and I went back and forth on it during the pre-production stage of this story, but I ultimately decided to go ahead and have both coexisting. There’s a precedence for it in the anime and in Pokedex descriptions, so its not really out of nowhere. Seagulls are just seagulls. Pokemon are considered “Monsters” in this world, not the exact same as animals. They’re almost like a middle-way between Humans and Animals. A Wingull is of higher intelligence and power than a normal Seagull, even though Wingulls are based off of them.
The Bidoof and Mudsdale situation is something I admittedly could’ve shown better now that I think about it- but my reasoning is that the Bidoof is there not only as his business partner, but as a guard of sorts against any would-be thieves. The Mudsdale would have a heck of a time trying to pull a cart all by himself while guarding his cargo at the same time. They’re supposed to be a team, not master and slave, if that makes any sense.
I know you get a bad rap from some certain people, but I appreciate you taking time out of your day to review my story and give me your thoughts. I’m always striving to improve, and I’ll keep your words in mind while I continue writing. Thank you once again!
The issue is more about if the wingull are smarter and stronger, where do seagulls fit in? This isn’t wholly unsolvable – perhaps pokemon reproduce very or can’t survive on the same food or… But the first thought when you bring up an animal that appears to fit an identical niche as a pokemon is going to be why pokemon aren’t filling it. Humans still have more distant relatives like chimpanzees around, but we’re the only remaining member of our genus.
Unless your story plans to get into detail on how the ecosystem works, bringing something up that doesn’t make much sense and raises a great deal of questions is a huge distraction from the rest of your plot.
[ but as a guard of sorts against any would-be thieves. The Mudsdale would have a heck of a time trying to pull a cart all by himself while guarding his cargo at the same time. They’re supposed to be a team, not master and slave, if that makes any sense.]
So a way to get that across would be to say it was the “lookout’s seat”, not “driver’s seat”, which would serve to reinforce that they’re a team rather than undermine it. We actually do have a similar concept already, actually – the reason the non-driving front seat is called “shotgun” is that the other person was supposed to be in charge of a shotgun while the driver handled the horses. If the driver is the horse, than the seat above him would be shotgun.
I agree- I could’t really figure out a term for what he was sitting on, thank you!

Hey Farla, how are you doing? Happy New Year, and may you find safety ad happiness in the upcoming decade.
I had hoped that the spam that comes in the wake of your review had stopped, but sadly it hasn’t. Nothing I can’t handle, just annoying. So I will probably do some editing when I’m in the proper headspace for it. Thank you for the suggestions.
I feel that in the case of Giratina, a legendary Pokemon, capitalization is needed. A lot of legendary Pokemon are worshiped as god’s by particular groups of people, according to the anime. There really is only one Giratina in the universe, so I feel that it serves as both a name and species title here, and should be capitalized. Of course, that’s a personal oppinion on my part.
Anyway, it was nice to hear from you again,
Take care of yourself.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/13468318/
Do me a favor and keep yourself and your goons off my shit. I really couldn’t care about what you think I should and shouldn’t capitalize. Either you or the dumbass St Elmo Fire have already said it before, and I don’t care to hear it again. A Pokémon’s name, as in the proper name of the Species will always be capitalized, especially in reference to an unnamed member of the species. Pokémon is capitalized because it’s a name. I’d capitalize the make or model of a car, so I’m gonna capitalize the umbrella term for all of the magick animals.
If you don’t like my story starting off like a story does, by introducing and describing the MC and stuff about him, then please, go pick a random chapter instead of the first chapter, you twit. Of course a story is gonna start with the main character doing random stuff. You have to build up to the crazy bullshit, nonce.
It’s has an apostrophe because it refers to the huge eyes belonging to it. I say ‘it’s huge eyes’ just like I’d say ‘John’s huge eyes.’ Just because the character looking at ‘it’ doesn’t have a name or gender to call it doesn’t mean I’m gonna use it without the ‘. Don’t like it? Don’t care.
I’m not finna have your bum ass grammar Nazi wannabe ass beefing wit niggas in my reviews. I KNOW that’s whatchu tryna do cuz that Warhammer nigga who lives on yo profile rent free reviewed first warning me that you was a hoe ass nigga. You and yo goon squad got one more time, Nigga.

Ooooh- you raise an interesting point! I guess it’s true my time lapses can come across as a little wonky. However, I guess I was picturing the whole saving the world thing occurring somewhere isolated and far away- up in a mountain, or on an island, etc.- and then he gets hurt doing his thing to make all the fighting stop.
This is just me exploring what could happen if he got hurt *worse* and there was no magical tears or healing to save him. I guess I kind of imagined the legendary/Ash’s current traveling partners going forth and dropping him off at the hospital, and thus that’s there first interactions with him, and thus trying to get this gosh darn stubborn protective Pikachu off of this kid IS a problem.
As for keeping Pikachu in a pokeball for two days… well… Lackluster and human focused, yes, but also while pokemon are in pokeballs they’re in a stasis. They don’t get worse, they don’t get better. And hospitals are busy. They’re so busy, especially after a major event like Ash’s adventures so often cause. They prioritize, they make things work, and they do the best with what they got. Is it the right thing? Probably not. Is it what I went with come this story? Yup.
[Also, I’m just a big angsty boi inside. That’s probably the biggest reason it’s included – because I feel like the time period when our characters ache makes the bit where they find healing all the more satisfying, especially for me as a writer!! :) ]
I appreciate you taking the time to write this all out. It must have taken some work! (I didn’t really ask for it, or need it, and possibly it could have been done in a slightly softer way. You graded my fanfiction on a show made for ten years old like it was an essay! XD) I will make sure to change the ‘admitted’ eventually- I’m too lazy right now and I’ve got other things to do. But thanks for pointing that out!
But yeah, either way, this was just me having some fun and writing soft hurt/comfort Pokemon fanfiction. It’s not exactly high profile, my friend. It’s just me enjoying myself, and if other people enjoy themselves over it, awesome! I hope that *you* enjoyed it, despite the perceived timing issues.
Thanks for reading my story! I hope you have a great day!
Nobody appreciates your rude and toxic reviews. It would be mighty nice if you could stop.

I’ll take your criticisms in that first paragraph to heart. Thank you for that. The second and third paragraphs are just retarded and incomprehensible though.
Thank you for the review! I’m glad to see my story contribute to NaRe, for better or for worse.
Previously, I’ve never figured out exactly how I’m writing dialogue wrong, but comparing your dialogue paragraph with my own work helped me realize that I’m writing sentences without speech verbs incorrectly. Thank you for that, I believe that I’ve made the necessary corrections.
In retrospect, I have to agree that making the Elite Four a bunch of idiots wasn’t necessary. My thought process behind that scene was to establish a threat with Team Plasma, while reinforcing the idea that the Pokemon League is either unable or too incompetent to help, as the games tend to present. That said, I could’ve done that without giving Marshal his outburst.
You are correct in assuming that most of the characters were intentionally made into assholes. I’ve got most of the story planned out already, and my ultimate goal is for Juan to learn that his preparation and overconfidence often amounts to nothing when he runs into a bit of bad luck. Whether or not that idea is interesting or entertaining is subjective, but I do think that I could ham up some of the unlikable characters in order to grab readers’ attention before the plot resolves. I plan on completing the story by the end of January, at which point I’d like to go back to make Juan and company more “entertainingly selfish,” as you aptly put it.
Again, I appreciate the review, especially the story-specific criticism. Have a Happy New Year.
Aww, Farla, you sweetheart. Thanks for taking the time to read — and for the fave! I’m super flattered.
Haha, yeah I know how you feel about adult trainers. I’ve read your writing guide, and I think you’ve got *a lot* of very smart things to say. Aged up trainers is probably one of the few areas where we diverge. This is probably an agree-to-disagree, but I’ll lay out my reasoning anyway:
1) First and foremost, I’m simply not as interested in writing about ten-year-olds. I teach kids age 5-18, and the littler ones by far take more effort for me to engage with. I do know some smart elementary school kids, but the teens are way more savvy and complicated. Still definitely babies in my book, all the more so because they think they know what they’re doing. But still kids. If I’m gonna write fan fiction, I’m gonna pursue what’s interesting to me, done and done.
2) I know that pokemon is a product of Japan, where little kids *are* more independent and where things are generally safer. But growing up in the US, with all our Amber Alerts, etc, I cannot fathom a world that lets children trek around the woods by themselves. Just doesn’t make sense to me. Especially because the wild pokemon would be only one of many dangers. I’m not trying to write Poke-pocalyse dark, but I like the wilderness and the cities both to feel genuinely threatening. I like fussing over camping equipment and trail conditions. I like a world where trainers who don’t pay attention get eaten or fall off a cliff (the most common type of hiking related death in our world) or just plain lost. If there’s a fair chance you could die doing it, you should have to be a legal adult to choose it.
3) One could argue that maybe kids in this world are taught more camping and survival skills at a young age and therefore younger kids *would* be savvy enough to go camping alone… BUT. I imagine life as a trainer as more of a side hustle and a grind, like being an artist or a youtuber. Like, there are costs that go into it. (I mentioned a hostel in the first sentence — no free pokecenter lodging. No handouts.) Lots of people try it and run out of money and have to quit. Meaning schools still cover STE(A)M and push students toward regular jobs. This world still needs doctors and lawyers and — as we’ll see — cops. I think that, as much as trainers are a celebrated and a legitimate part of the economy, they’re also seen as an optional luxury, or like a hobby. Again, like the arts. It’s hard for me to imagine they’d be able to cram in that much more wilderness training for kids if they’re still trying to teach English and geometry and all that too. Maybe some, but not a ton. Like, just because I had phys ed does not mean I’m qualified to become a body builder without lots of extra help. I imagine getting licensed to train requires an extra class after school or on weekends plus an exam, kinda like driver’s ed.
4) I imagine that most trainers go off at 18 almost like a gap year, instead of doing it at 10. See the world a little, come back and get a “real job” and/or go to college. Chapter two will touch on that a little. So there are definitely older, established trainers, and they’re in their early 20’s. (Mark is probably 22, 23 or so. And I think we can already see in this chapter alone how he’s better traveled than Natalie is, has more pokemon and of a better cut.) I imagine there are few trainers older than 30 though — gets too hard on the body, income is too irregular if you’re trying to start a family.
5) That said, I do think a lot of trainers cheat a little and start early, though unofficially. The family pet is low-key their starter, getting trained and bonding with their human every time they go for a walk. So in that sense, yeah I imagine a lot of kids do get their introduction around age 10 or 12, and “come back to it” in a real way at 18 — but this time on their own, away from home.
ALLLLLL that said… I’m glad you like the dialogue and how they’re both characterized! I think that’s what I was most anxious about back in October, so it’s great to hear it’s working so far. Hopefully I can keep it up.
ORAS — I remember you talking about it a little! I definitely think it’ll be for the best if I go off-roading with Aqua and Magma. I’m reworking them pretty heavily. Aqua especially is a real head-scratcher to try to justify when we’ve got islands in the Pacific sinking because of climate change. No, Archie–no more water. I’m taking lots of inspiration instead from The Earth Liberation Front, Earth First, The Sea Shepherds, Antifa, and other activists I’ve encountered. Geoengineering, industrial mining, tricky politicky messes ported over from our world. And also low key from my favorite professor from undergrad. Aqua and Magma are definitely equally noble — or at least, one is no more villainous than the other.
Glad you’re along for the ride! Very curious to see what you’ll think of the entire mini arc once I get the whole thing up. Especially since I only have the basic shape of what comes next. It’s a good time for speculation and brainstorming, because I’m not married to an end yet.
Cheers, friend!

Oh! And one more thing about ages:
[“I’ve seen you around the gym a lot lately. Most trainers are in and out with a badge in a day or two, you know.”
“Well, I’m not most trainers. I don’t just want a badge — I want to actually get better.”]
My intent with that line was that it’s bravado. She wants to be liked, and it *sounds* good to say. The next chapter really digs into why she hasn’t gotten her badge yet, and it’s really not because she’s a dedicated trainer.
First and foremost, I’m simply not as interested in writing about ten-year-olds. I teach kids age 5-18, and the littler ones by far take more effort for me to engage with.
This is kinda a fair point. Not even the anime writes its ten year old characters like they’re ten.
Oh, Farla, what if you scared this poor person off with your mean reviews? However will the fandom survive their loss.
