Pokeauthor Responses, Part 8

I’m a cyberbully! It’s like regular bullying, only more futuristic.

Thank you for all of your input i didn’t know that about the attacks. However until a time when asked for it to be gone i will keep it up there. As with the second chapter a prologue like what i did can be classed. I may extend it so that it can be classed as a chapter. I am glad that you have read my story and can feedback. Its always appreciated for my readers.

If you also look into other stories then you will notice other people have done the same thing i have done. Thanks for reading and your review.

I’m just kinda going along with how it’s put in the game by what to capitalise (a wild Deerling appeared! etc.) and pretty much every Pokémon and move is capitalised in there so… yeah… ^^;

Thanks anyways though.

Thank you for the constructive criticism. It’s nice to get some feedback from an experienced person on fanfiction (I see you have written many stories for many fandoms), plus the way you broke down your points based on the lines I had written was very helpful.

I had written this about two years ago and I was deathly afraid of publishing it because I kind of have a fear of negative criticism. However I’ve tried overcoming it of late (if you’re scared of negative reviews, how are you going to improve?) and decided to publish it and see the reaction I got. Clearly, my story does need work and when I read through the first chapter again I realized that I was heading in a mary-sue esque direction. I also made some alterations to my second story (which I personally think is a lot better), in response to your reviews. Have you read the second chapter of that story as well?

Again, thanks for the helpful feedback, hope I can hear from you again.

alright, but this is the first time I’ve been here, I’m getting use to it…

Subject: Bullying

First off, I read the whole “click here if you were hurt”.
And frankly, it only made me feel worse.
Telling me I can’t write is probably the worst thing anyone could say to me.
Like most people on FF, writing is what I love to do. And when someone says I
can’t, it really hurts.
I don’t care if you were only trying to give constructive critisism.
I came here to enjoy my experience.
And now I’m quitting.
Why? Because this IS technically cyberbullying.
And if I’m going to be bullied, then I am out.
So thanks for ruining an already bad day.
And making me cry.
And destroying my reams.
And for making me quit.

According to their profile, they mean “quit” in the rarely used alternate meaning, “posting on deviantart instead”. Apparently their story was that awful Dimension Thief one.

Helios the Divine Dragon | Well?

Thank for you review :) As you can tell, I am bad with grammar xD

Fluitare has also been chatty, explaining that you capitalize bird species because according to her sister’s cousin’s friend Darwin did it and everyone has to do what he says, and therefore to be consistent you must capitalize everything forever because that’s how consistency works. Also, professors say “discover new species of pokemon” and that proves pokemon is a genus so it should be capitalized because there is no other word that could go in that sentence. Luckily the butchering of biology seems to have ended and we’ve moved to the games did it therefore they’re proper nouns, which is only my second least favorite argument.

You destroyed her reams, Farla. Her reams.

YOU MONSTER.For serious, though, it seems to me like the only reason why this girl should probably not be posting her work in public has nothing to do with her skill level and everything to do with her reaction to negative criticism. I’ve read your review, and honestly? You didn’t say she wasn’t good enough to post on FFNet. You said that if she couldn’t integrate details into a story, then she was dealing with some serious problems with her narration. That’s actually pretty mild compared to other reviews that’ve come out of you. Everyone gets negative crit now and then, and some are harsher than others. It’s fine if you get pissed off at it. Perfectly normal, in fact. But if your first instinct is to run crying from it and then complain about it to your friends for sympathy pats, then that’s not going to make you a good writer.(I’m pretty sure some part of that paragraph just made me a hypocrite, but I give no fucks at this hour. I’ve been completely sober and non-sleep-deprived for a week, Farla. A week. My ability to take anything that comes out of my own mouth seriously is gone.)But hey. It’s dA. Should we really expect anything less from that side of fandom? Pfft, no. In fact, I’m pretty sure the drama there would make a very nice drinking game. (Vodka and Pokémon go hand-in-hand, let me tell you.)

    1. Jax says:

Wow. What the crap happened to this comment.

      Well then.

      1. Farla says:

You said sober. Internet law demands your post collapse into itself.

        1. Go says:

lol DESTROYER OF REAMS. You’ve leved up!
Farla should totally add that to her resume :D

        2. Jax says:

Welp, there’s only one clear solution to that. Pardonnez-moi while I go make friends with a bottle of Svedka by way of turning fanfics into drinking games. If you don’t hear from me tomorrow night, it’s because I did something stupid like read Pokemon MASTER and take a shot every time Ash and Misty express their undying love for each other with physical violence and forced dialogue.

          1. Farla says:

It’s funny you should say that because the next batch of stories involves superhumans with swords.

Oh god, remember when everyone was reccing that story? I should reread it sometime.

            1. Negrek says:

You say “remember” like the recs ever stopped coming for that ‘fic. :P

I’m pretty sure I never even made it all the way through the first chapter… all I remember was Pikachu doing some move where it turned itself into pure energy and vibrated really fast and made a golem explode. After that point I really just couldn’t take it anymore.

              1. Farla says:

Really? I thought it had slowly disappeared as time passed and it grew more out of date.

And you missed so much! The first chapter doesn’t have Pikachu turning into a sword, or the pileup of characters for no reason, and then suddenly all the pokemon turn evil on like the last chapter and Misty is two people because magic I think and there are these magic cloaks that don’t seem to do anything but just look cool.

              2. Negrek says:

It’s still up there on TVTropes and I usually expect to see at least one mention of it whenever people do  a rec thread on Serebii etc… I think it’s still fairly popular, at leastin some places.

              3. Farla says:

Well yeah, but that’s TvTropes. I assumed it was there because it was old.

          2. starlingnight says:

Oh, ‘Pokemon Master’! Pretty sure that was the first fanfic I ever read, I would have been about nine? I was pretty awed by the concept of writing such scary stuff about this show I adored…

Clearly I have nostalgia, but I do remember Pikachu turning into a shadow energy katana which Ash would use to have swordfights with Misty’s evil sister, and Brock being a scumbag rapist (and extend that to everyone being OOC), and the characters blowing their hair out of their face every two seconds, so my educated guess is that it is actually ridiculous.

            1. Farla says:

Wow, I don’t even remember Brock. I only ever read it all the way through once, which I think is true for most people for all they praise it. It just kept going, you know? And going.

Was that the one with the giant Machamp that implied it was going to rape Misty? I think that’s where I stopped reading.

Now I’m wondering whether to be glad that by the time I had that recced to me I was experienced enough with fandom to take one look at it and decide “probably not worth the wordcount,” or sad because it means I can’t complain about it with you guys.

It’s actually relatively…okay, I can’t say good, but interesting. Not like pure grade crack, but still with a lot of weirdness. My favorite part is how they resolved the love triangle! I didn’t see it coming, but looking back it’s inevitable from the moment you learn there’s a special snowflake element made up for Ash and Pikachu turns into his katana.

    2. Farla says:

I get the impression they didn’t read very closely before deleting and throwing their fit, and so took “you shouldn’t post a story that doesn’t work” as “you should never write again you worthless failure of a human being”.

  2. Legalist217 says:

[What about a series that invents words like Capitol or Regigigas?
So if something has a name you deem ridiculous their grammar because
    automatically invalid?]

This Fluitare does have a knack for choosing books you already hold in contempt as examples for defending his/her point.

On a separate, somewhat unrelated note: I understand your reasoning, but I’m a touch sad that you tend to skip over romance fic nowadays. I know it’s generally going to fall on deaf ears in that category, but not always. Back in the hazy mists of December 2009, you reviewed a romance oneshot that I wrote. I took everything you said to heart (well, kind of?) and wound up discovering your stories, your forum, and your archive of reviews on LiveJournal.

Reading all of that taught me a lot about writing, both the mechanics side and the plotting/characterization side. I think I’m a much better writer as a result. I’m certainly more serious about improving myself and my work. It’s just that I don’t reckon I would necessarily be at this point if you hadn’t told me that you don’t need to put “[Name] said” after every bit of dialogue.

I guess my ultimate point in telling you this is twofold. Firstly, I’d like to say thank you. I may have already, but being at a college level for writing makes me reflect on the lessons I’ve learned in various places more often. Secondly, I just wanted to give a visible example of this crusade having lasting results, because it has. I’m forever grateful, Farla.

    1. XStrawberryDuckFeathersX says:

Yeah, same here, Legalist ! I only came across Farla after I got one of her reviews. Finding this blog has really helped me out too. Thanks, Farla! :3

    2. Farla says:

Well, I’m glad to hear that.

I’m intermittently skipping this time, part of why I’m so very slow. With most of them there just isn’t anything much to say beyond the capitalization/dialogue paragraphs. I’m really just trying to avoid most of the canon character shippy stuff, because it’s mostly original fiction about especially boring people.

  3. Guest says:

I don’t think yiranY is Fluitare. The voices of their stories are pretty different, and Fluitare’s argument seemed to be less about empathy (!?) (although yiranY was possibly not thinking through his examples and didn’t specifically mean that) and more about aesthetics or consistency. And someone who thinks that Darwin capitalising bird names means that everyone must capitalise bird names forevermore is probably not going to argue that “grammar doesn’t have to be completely correct in fiction” … probably.

    1. Dragonfree says:

I know who yiranY is, and yeah, he’s almost definitely not Fluitare.

    2. Farla says:

Yeah, they’re a whole different flavor of crazy annoying.

  4. starlingnight says:

I love the word cyber, it’s so dorky…

    1. Farla says:

      Cyber makes everything sound sillier.

  5. Niesse says:

Well, I think these people should be more considerate. You clearly have a difficult cyber-home life. Not everyone has a perfect cyber-family! :C

    1. Farla says:

It’s true! I just lash out and take their internet lunch cybermoney because I want to be friends with them!

      1. sliz225 says:

Deep down, you’re only mean because you’re cyber-insecure and you have a low cyber-esteem.

  6. sliz225 says:

    Not to be cruel.  But.
If a few strongly worded critiques make you want to quit writing forever . . . maybe you should.
