Pokeauthors Special Spotlight: On Not-Fanfiction, Take Two

Time to do this dance again. This author is more amenable than the last one, and mostly comes around by the end.

(This was about the high school fic with the misery sue boy and the rapey gardevoir, if you need context.)

Thanks

I appreciate the review, despite not really going into it. I write in my own style, what I’m comfortable with. I am going to read into your review to take notes, but grammatical errors are beyond me. I do everything I can to make sure everything is straight to the point. I tell the point of view because I want to be sure everyone knows.

Numbers, that’s just me being a bit lazy, I’ll admit, but I can change that. As for the then… I missed that completely, and I literally died laughing, so thank for that.As for borderlines, I write on my phone, so borderlines can sometimes not work, but maybe they fixed that, thanks for that.English should be capitalized… huh… you’d think a phone’s spellcheck would know that.

My descriptions suck, I get it, I’very been writing for years and still can’t get description well, at least I’m trying. I could have just been like some other readers who go, “Hey, use your imagination, I don’t care.” Yeah… thanks wattpad…

As for pokemon, I don’t believe humans would logically be able to capture pokemon in tiny balls, in a realistic viewpoint. In my stories, I use harsh reality, and the reality is, pokemon, would not, in any sense, be able, to be captured. If they can read minds, see the future, warp apace, and be god, I’m pretty sure, they wouldn’t let humans develop pokeballs. That’s just me. Plus, I like the society’s daily struggles between humans and pokemon. It’s far more exciting than the political struggles our world is faced today. Not to memtion, the pokemon are meant to be depicted as cruel, overconfident monsters in many regards.

As for my dialogue, I grow tired of this notion that dialogue is strictly meant for he said, she said, that’s why I like saying what the person is doing before they speak. I still use said, yelled, cried, but I like variety and using said over and over and over just annoys me honestly, sorry. :(

The mutism is merely for Rui’s character development, something that’s there to show Rui’s growth as he finally starts coming out of his shell. I’ve never written myself like this, but it’s a very good example of myself when I have no friends or family. Also, Rui doesn’t like to cause anyone trouble, he prefers to suffer than to cause anyone discomfort. He gets it from the abuse he’s received and just doesn’t want to stoop to their level. Yes, he’s a weak character, but… seeing him turn into a strong character makes it worthwhile to me.

Silvia’s description… I get it, my description is equivalent to the smell of a Garbodor caught in a grease fire… I get it. Lol.

All in all, I get it. You most likely didn’t like the story at all so far, I understand it probably does count as my own work, he’ll all my stories cout as that to me, but… http://www.fanfiction.net is my home to me. I started out on here, my friends are on here. I don’t want to both them by saying, go on fiction press to all 178 of my followers to read my stuff. That’s just not me. I want to be that one author everyone thinks of when it comes to unique pokemon stories. I’m thankfully every time I get a review, even yours. Hopefully, with this, I can better evolve my skills and make it better but it’s just not for you it seems. Thank you for reading it so thoroughly and have a great day.

Sincerely,

Murloc_Rampage :D

secs agoFor future reference, this is easier if you quote the sections you’re referring to.

If you have trouble with grammar, you can get a beta reader to handle it for you. That’s what they’re for. Several have offered their services here: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/42724996/1/Beta-Signup

[I tell the point of view because I want to be sure everyone knows.]

Everyone should already know; as I said, it’s obvious from context. If it isn’t, that’s a bigger problem that needs fixing.

[My descriptions suck]

Not what I said. I said your specific choice of what to describe and when was a bad idea. It’s specifically overlong physical description so early in the story that is the problem here. You’ve heard of conservation of detail, right? You shouldn’t mention things that aren’t relevant. Unless his physical description is relevant to the story, it is perfectly valid to skip over it and get on with the plot.

[As for pokemon, I don’t believe humans would logically be able to capture pokemon in tiny balls, in a realistic viewpoint.]

…Because sapient ice cream cones that can shoot magic beams are so realistic? Pokemon is a fantasy story, dude. Pokeballs are the least unrealistic thing about the setting.

[If they can read minds, see the future, warp apace, and be god, I’m pretty sure, they wouldn’t let humans develop pokeballs.]

But they wouldn’t hunt humans to extinction because…?

I think you’re really overstating the power level of the average pokemon here, too. Only the strongest, top-tier evolutions can do things like that, most of which do not exist in the wild. (The god pokemon have also repeatedly shown that they are strictly hands-off.) Most pokemon are not much more deadly than real-world animals, and those couldn’t stop us from developing spears, cages, and guns.

[Plus, I like the society’s daily struggles between humans and pokemon. It’s far more exciting than the political struggles our world is faced today. Not to memtion, the pokemon are meant to be depicted as cruel, overconfident monsters in many regards.]

Except your portrayal is completely divorced from canon pokemon behavior, so again, you might as well just make up your own fantasy races for this.

[As for my dialogue, I grow tired of this notion that dialogue is strictly meant for he said, she said, that’s why I like saying what the person is doing before they speak.]

What are you talking about? I never said anything about this.

[He gets it from the abuse he’s received and just doesn’t want to stoop to their level.]

Okay, but why is everyone else enabling that abuse? Where are the therapists? Guidance counselors? Child protective services? Schools are legally obligated to provide medical care for their students, and that includes psychological care. Rui is really obviously messed up, he should not need to actively seek out help.

[Silvia’s description… I get it, my description is equivalent to the smell of a Garbodor caught in a grease fire… I get it.]

No, I really don’t think you do. Read what I said more thoroughly. There is something very specific I was objecting to.

[I don’t want to both them by saying, go on fiction press to all 178 of my followers to read my stuff.]

You’re already bothering everyone who comes to this website to read fanfiction and instead finds themselves having to skim through original fiction. This isn’t even a huge imposition. You can link to your other accounts on your profile; plenty of authors already do that for their AO3 accounts. If they really want to read your stories, they will not mind clicking one extra link.

3m agoWow, I’m bothering everyone. Huh. I’M bothering everyone. Out of the thousands of stories posted and updated, I’M the only one that’s bothering everyone.
secs agoI never said you were the only one. You are, however, contributing to a greater problem. Drop the martyr complex.
5m agoSinice I’m nothing like you, I want to hear your reasoning, your ‘why’ so to speak. Explain yourself please.
Like most people, I come to this site to read fanfiction. Cluttering the archive with things that look like fanfiction but actually aren’t makes it harder to find to find the stories I want to read. If I wanted to read high school drama, I’d visit my local library or Fictionpress, where they are everywhere.
38m agoSo you greatly dislike it because it’s high school drama. That’s understandable, I greatly dislike most high school drama, apart from anime like Clannad. Clannas was an amazing Anime. Question, what’s your stance on pokemon human relationships? Do you see them as tools for our amusement, or friends we should cherish and get to know well?

secs ago[So you greatly dislike it because it’s high school drama.]

I still don’t think we’re communicating. I don’t dislike it because it’s high school drama. I just think it should be in the high school drama section and not the Pokemon section.

Sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed that. Bad habit. Alright, the reason I put it as pokemon is because I am using pokemon, they do have their attacks, they have their own language as well, I just humanized them for the story. As an added note, I’m really sorry my writing isn’t the best so that didn’t help it. Now, the high school drama doesn’t fit because the school life isn’t what’s important. Sure, the grades are a part of the story, but that’s only to reference Rui’s abusive parents. Spoilers, Silvia gets Rui out of that trapped mentality. That’s what the story is about. No matter how much you’ve fallen into the darkest, even if you can’t see the light, someone can always save you. I guess it’s supposed to be a little inspirational because my stories got me out of my own depression.

secs ago[Alright, the reason I put it as pokemon is because I am using pokemon, they do have their attacks, they have their own language as well, I just humanized them for the story.]

How is that functionally different from any fantasy race? You’ve just described magic-using elves, pretty much.

Humanizing pokemon alters a fundamental component of what makes the Pokemon franchise what it is. There are hundreds of stories about humans coexisting with independent human-like creatures with magic powers. Pokemon’s trainer setup is what makes it unique. If you’re going to write a story based on, and thus constrained by, an existing work, you should ask yourself why. What can you do with Pokemon that you can’t do with a totally free, unconstrained setting of your own making? I’m not arguing that your story isn’t valid in and of itself, but what is added by filtering it through a Pokemon lens? If anything, I think your story would reach a lot more people on Fictionpress, as you’re dealing with general themes that resonate with a lot of people, not just Pokemon fans.

Humanizing pokemon ia a part of the series as well. When I think about it… I feel like the games work hard to get it in our heads that they were made to fight for our entertainment. That… they’re supposed to die for us no matter who we are. I guess I have trouble accepting that after hearing Gardevoir’s story in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team. Someone so cruel to her… and yet she gives up her life without a second thought… is it nature… or is it the pokeballs? Where does the instinct end, and human control begin? These questions rang through my mind for years… eventually melding into my first major pokemon story, My Unwanted Life. Please don’t read it, you’ll probably kill me over it. Not literally, just a joke, but it’s not edited well, at all.

secs ago[I feel like the games work hard to get it in our heads that they were made to fight for our entertainment. That… they’re supposed to die for us no matter who we are.]

Yes, the games’ portrayal is messed up. But I don’t see how you’re engaging with that by removing the offending issue (pokemon being treated as nonpersons). I only skimmed first chapter of My Unwanted Life just now, but it looks like you could replace “psychic pokemon” with “elves” and the story would still work. You even have them using weapons.

23m agoThat’s true… originally… the story was about human and elves. I changed it to pokemon because I love pokemon. I wanted to free that dark aspect of pokemon most ignore. I did that… I bet you receive a lot of hateful responses from other authors you talk to. Then again… I guess I don’t really count as an author either… hm…

secs ago[I wanted to free that dark aspect of pokemon most ignore.]

Except that the things in that fic aren’t in Pokemon at all. There’s a difference between emphasizing a dark aspect of canon and making up your own dark aspects wholesale. Honestly, making them elves would have been more meaningful, as elves do actually have dark aspects that most people ignore.

[I guess I don’t really count as an author either…]

What are you talking about?

Even when I started off writing Adventure time fanfics, they were real ones, as you call them, since they involved Finn going on adventures. Then people said that I wasn’t doing it right, that I don’t understand what it meant to be an author. Eventually, I quit for a year or two, reading everyone else’s stories. Taking down most of my old stories. The guy who made me quit was a lot like you, except he was saying the exact opposite. That fanfiction is about originality, not copying the formula already established. He said, “How can you even consider yourself to be an author if you can’t even write them out of context?” I thought about it… and he was right. When I quit, I started writing my unwanted life in a notebook, using some of the depression I faced to fuel it. In the end, I changed it to pokemon because I like pokemon. I don’t really like elves, or orcs, or sorcery. Pokemon I’d just more interesting to have because this Nidoking, despite looking intimidating, could be a really great character. Also… I love fem pokemon with human males. Not elves x human. Elves and humans are too normal, too accepted. Even if in lore they hate each other, frequently, not always. I guess I still don’t know what it means to be an author if I can’t separate the difference between a fanfiction and my own work.

secs ago[Also… I love fem pokemon with human males. Not elves x human. Elves and humans are too normal, too accepted.]

Except your fem pokemon act a lot like elves and very little like pokemon. I don’t see how your fetishes couldn’t be satisfied by werewolves or vampires or some other exotic fantasy creature with mind control powers. Or demons! Demons are such a general category you can really interpret them however you want. Or aliens, if you don’t like magic! There are many options. It could be fun for you to branch out a little.

[The guy who made me quit was a lot like you, except he was saying the exact opposite. That fanfiction is about originality, not copying the formula already established. He said, “How can you even consider yourself to be an author if you can’t even write them out of context?”]

That sounds like he just hates fanfiction. Why was he even reading fanfiction if he hates that “context” so much? You can’t please people like that by writing original fiction and sticking fandom names on it, and doing so will just make the people who are looking for fanfiction angry at you too.

40m agoIf I don’t… are you going to try to get me kicked off fanfiction..? :(
secs agoNo? What are you talking about?
46m agoI was scared you were going to try and get my account deleted.
secs agoI don’t have that power. Of course, given all the porn you’ve written, you’re at risk for deletion anyway. (You do know porn is against the site rules, right? You did read the rules and guidelines?) All the more reason to move your work elsewhere.
5m agoLol, yeah. 😅 kind of bad, I know. In the end, it’s my fault and I’ll take responsibility when it happens. As for you, how’s a compromise. I promise never to post a new story that doesn’t involve the core mechanics of pokemon. However, I’ll still finish the ones I have left. This way, I can finish what I started and I won’t make new questionable stories.
secs agoAlright.

Well, that was a rollercoaster. Interesting to see there are in fact people who are pushing in the other direction, which just motivates me to do this more.

I don’t believe humans would logically be able to capture pokemon in little balls.

But you can go to high school with them and hopefully be raped by the cuter ones. Monsters that you can capture and keep in your pocket? Poppycock! Fucking them? Well, why not?

I mean, I guess I can’t argue his actual point, so there’s that? Capturing pokemon in pokeballs is kind of unrealistic, I do have to admit that.

I guess I have trouble accepting that after hearing Gardevoir’s story

Urgh, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is the worst thing to ever happen to the Pokemon fandom, isn’t it? At least this gives me some more proof that PMD is the reason why people find skinning bad high school drama with Pokemon is acceptable.

That sounds like he just hates fanfiction.

I think the problem is the idea that there can only be two extremes: the OT story that does absolutely nothing original and could practically be a form letter you filled in specific names on and the original-fiction-with-fanfic-skin over the top originality. Ideally, you’re supposed to build on the ideas of the source material, without either ignoring or being bound to it. Now doesn’t that sound reasonable? I must be a motherfucking genius, and the Farlas haven’t even managed to tempt me into posting fanfiction yet.

Well, that was a lot more reasonable and rational than I expected. I honestly expected a lot more terrible justifications of the rape-gardevoir, but if he outright admits he’s writing it that way because it’s his fetish, I guess there’s not much that can be done about that.

    1. Mini-Farla says:

Re: the pokeball thing, I interpreted his argument to mean it’s unrealistic because pokemon are too powerful to be subdued by humans. Of course, if you take that stance it’s more logical for them to completely dominate humanity… which is exactly what happens in his old fic, so I guess that is consistent?

I honestly expected a lot more terrible justifications of the rape-gardevoir, but if he outright admits he’s writing it that way because it’s his fetish, I guess there’s not much that can be done about that.

I actually did grill him further on it, and he says he is able to recognize that it’s pure fantasy and would not be healthy in real life, which actually makes him a lot more well-adjusted than most porn writers.

      1. CrazyEd says:

Pshaw, well that sure is boring. I was expecting a massive trainwreck like the guy with the Lucario fic in the last spotlight.
