In which “politeness” is again shown to mean a pile of unearned compliments.
Hello!
It seems you left a long and quite helpful review on one of my stories. I really appreciate the feedback and criticism, but is not letting me read the whole thing! Every time I try to access the reviews page for the story it ends up displaying ‘no reviews found’. That’s why I might be a little late with replying and just wanted you to know how grateful I am for your advice.
Thank you for reading, and wishing you a happy new year~

Subject: review reply
Wow, uh, I wasn't expecting the first review I got to be actual constructive criticism.
First of all, sorry about the apostrophe, I have no idea how that got in there or how I
missed it. Thank you for pointing it out and, if you decide to read any more, please let
me know if you spot any other errors.
I get what you're saying about the Pokémon name capitalization, and it makes a lot of
sense. However, to be frank, someone would correct me either way I write it. I can't say
which of us is right or wrong, but support can be given for both ways of writing the
names.
Finally, I can't blame you for mentioning the lack of originality. I'd gone through
several possible introductions before settling on the current one, and I am well aware of
how much of a cliché it is. Creativity is something that I am trying to work on.
I give you my thanks for your review, and appreciate the honesty. Funnily enough, I
didn't know there was someone doing reviews of the Pokémon fics posted this month until
just now.
Oh, and one more thing... This is kinda awkward, but I think I accidentally deleted your
review from my e-mail. I swear it was an accident, so please don't hate me for it.
--------------------
I said my standard bit about how just because two people disagree doesn't mean both are equally right,
and I get a string of PMs:

--------------------
And yet, how can we decide which is the "right" way?
I could go into great detail on why I prefer capitalization, and we could ave a long
debate on the topic, but I really don't feel like being a stuck-up jerk to someone trying
to help my writing. In short, I just worry that a reader would mistake a Pokémon name
for an ordinary or misspelled word ("ditto" for example), even when the context
would suggest otherwise.
However, since I did say either way would work (and also since you've had more experience
writing than me), I will take your advice and make the necessary changes upon posting my
third chapter.
Hmm... Now that I think about it, very few people will likely read my story, so there
would probably be little to no opposition to the change. More than that, you suggesting
it early on makes it easier to make the change, so I guess some more thanks are in order.
Thank you.

Um, I just want to make sure I have what you're saying straight. Which of these would be
right:
-"Pikachu walked away."
-"The Pikachu walked away."
-"A pikachu walked away."
-"Some pikachu walked away."
I'm too used to just capitalizing the species, so I just want to make sure I'm consistent
when I make the change. Unless I'm mistaken, I'm pretty sure the first two would be
correct since they address a specific subject, while the subject of the last two is more
vague.

Sigh, never mind. I try to stay true to canon, and in all media I've seen, it's always
caps.

And when I went to the site I saw I was blocked. Why? Who knows.
The chill replies really make me worry about everyone.

Re: capitalisation. I’m aware that this is a commonly debated issue in pkmn fandom. If you google “Pokemon capitalisation” you’ll find a lot of people arguing for the usage of different capitalisation conventions. Funnily enough, I used to subscribe to your method of capitalisation, for exactly the reasons you mentioned, and got into a debate with an irl friend who disagreed. But, after reading a bunch of fic, I realised there was something I found easier to read about having all Pokémon species names capitalised, so I went over to the dark side.
And, after having a couple of Pokefics under my belt, it’s not something I’m likely to change at this point, sorry.
Re: jarringness. Squirtle clearly isn’t in his right mind, and he’s switching between a lot of different methods of dealing with his grief. He’s faking, in other words, and I’ve met a lot of people who are very good at faking a hyperactive cheerfulness to cover up the fact that they’re not happy. This, of course, doesn’t change anything if it takes you right out of the fic. But, I’ve written other stories outside of this fandom that deal with grief in a much more sombre, muted way – a way that seems much more relatable to me – and I enjoy it, but I wanted to try something different. So this was an experimental attempt to write something with similar themes but… less serious and more ridiculous. I’m sorry that it didn’t work. I admit I could have handled it more delicately.
And thank you for the spellcheck tip. I’ll be sure to add more Pokemon names to my dictionary!

Your Review To Beautiful Ruin
On to the review for your information yes I do know that I could just edit it on the actual site, but I chose to rewrite it to make it better for my readers and I have to say I liked it more the second time then I did the first.
As for the criticism I appreciate it and I will try my best to follow your instructions but what I do not appreciate is the way you wrote it which came off very rude.
I’m not trying to send you hate mail in anyway and before you think I can’t take criticism I can, but all I’m saying is the next time you review my stories I would appreciate it if you weren’t so rude.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I don’t know if you know this but you could have edited the actual story on the site rather than re-uploading the whole thing.
As for my review I think your story was good, but there are some things you could fix. One thing would be not to capitalize words like Pokemon or Pikachu as an example. The only real time to do that would be if your actually using the Pokemon’s like how Ash’s Pikachu is named Pikachu which would be the appropriate time to capitalize it.
I also noticed in your story that you used “there daily game” rather than their which would be the right word to use in that particular sentence. You had the same problem when using “your being” which is something I suggest you work on some more.
I would also suggest using more commas but nonetheless it was an enjoyable read.
See? I took your original comment and twisted it into something more polite. It’s okay to criticize others work because that’s what you need to do to learn, but just make sure you aren’t rude about it at the same time. Also it would help to find something positive to say about the story and if not just try to be nice when reviewing. Trust me being a nice person when speaking to someone goes a long way. Hoped it helped. :-)

Ok look I was trying my hardest to be as nice as I could with you and help you to the
best of my ability, but I’m not going to waste my time and energy on someone who can’t
accept it. I only gave a suggestion. You don’t have to follow it. Please do not PM me
again.
——————–
But you know, some people would consider it not only rude but arrogant to put compliments of your own work in someone else’s mouth.
Thanks for the review. For some reason its not showing up, so could you PM me your review? Part of it was cut off in the e-mail.
Do you do a different section every month, or just Pokemon in January?
Thanks for the review on my story. I like it when people review on it :3
Unfortunately, while I was looking for a few things to improve my writing, I realized most of the criticisms on the reviews were based mostly on the very few grammatical errors rather than the actual plot or characterization. Is it really worthy of a Zero? ._.?And that’s why I’m making sure the first one says “zero reviews” now.
Also no worries about the plot hole there. I was pretty well aware that it would cause some people to wonder what the cause of the whole situation was, and I have something planned for that. It’s kind of like the zombie apocalypse. Sometimes in some stories, it just randomly /appears/. There aren’t any signs of it starting, it just happens. And later the main cast delved into the secrets of why it’s happening in the first place. I was thinking about doing something like that in this situation, putting some characters and pokemon into a setting like this and then expanding out the world, adding in history and context and all that stuff.
But in all seriousness, thanks so much for the review. I really needed some criticism :)
That1CraneTo be honest here, thanks for the criticism, I will take your advice and correct my story but I just wanted to tell you some Pokemon will be named after the species they are, for example the infernape is named Infernape, just wanted to tell you.
Also the I have changed the story a bit, and yes i do know I’m moving really slowly on the plot but that’s mainly because i’m trying to develop the main characters, it should move on much faster after chapter 3 due to the fact i’ll be skipping most of the journey unless it’s plot relevant.
You do have a point though on how this has been done several times but I don’t think there are any bad ideas just bad executions… and to be fully honest with you this story is a bit of a prologue, for another story i plan to make, it takes the place of the delta episode and involves hoopa and multiple other legionaries.
Also for some reason your review is not appearing on my story, but i got the email for it. Anyway I really appreciate the feedback man or woman or non gender specific term
AsandhimitrarudrakshiThe only thing about you is, it reminds me of a lovestruck character which I liked and gave up hope for
Chill people is probably due to the New Year being just a few days ago, so everyone’s still
drunkcheerful over it.Also, who’s the last guy and what is this about? Their profile just has a few favs and zero stories. Kinda creepy message.
I will post the fuller version later. It still doesn’t make much sense.
Well, I agree you can be brisk in your reviews, which can be read as rudeness, but I disagree that you’re actually rude or that you should sprinkle in compliments you don’t think are true. I’ve never seen you actually insult the author in your fanfic reviews, and you don’t just go ‘wow this is terrible’ without, you know, actually talking about the technical details you think are off, so I’m not sure what people are complaining about.
I’ve seen her insult authors, but only when they’ve written something breathtakingly bigoted rather than just plain bad. And she hasn’t even done *that* yet this year, despite being faced with some really weird sexism already.
Yeah, I’ve seen people complaining about Farla out in the wild, but the only sin they can name is the pokemon name capitalization thing. OH NO. HORREUR.
The funniest thing is that I don’t even care that much. It bugs me, but there’s so much other stuff that bugs me way more. But they care SO MUCH. So much that just me saying it in a review on their story, or even on someone else’s story, is the end of the world.
If you know it bothers people, why mention it at all? You say it barely bugs you compared to all the other writing errors. You’re just creating unnecessary unease in writers! Stick to advice that actually helps authors improve; it’s one of the things you’re good at.
Yes, it does come across as important to since there’s a full paragraph dedicated to pointing it out. It would be better portray as a passing thought with a single sentence. Multiple lines of reviews tend to be things readers care about, such as pointing out that the good guys not knowing murder is wrong.
All corrections bug people, and the capitalization one actually does the least to cause “unease” in authors – it’s an issue of furious rage at how wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong I am, which the paragraph mitigates.
Also, no, I said there were things I cared more about, not nothing I cared less about.
Not all people are bugged; I saw a couple of the supposedly “private” messages where authors took most of the corrections pretty well.
Speaking of the PMs, why aren’t your replies also shown? It creates bias when you only give half of the conversation. Who knows, maybe you just worded something in a way that sounded confrontational.
Ah… her replies are shown. They’re in orange. Most of these messages are direct responses to reviews (which are also documented) not answered by Farla afterwards.
Speaking of bias, if you’ve got a problem with me can you just jump to that instead of dancing around the elephant?
Oh… very sorry then. I didn’t see your name and kind of jumped to a conclusion. Damn, this is awkward…
However, I have no problem with you nor have I ever had one. You give good, honest reviews for the most part from what I’ve seen. It’s a trait that’s become far too scarce in the fanfiction community.
I think I’ve been reasonable with my comments barring the one about PMs (once more, I apologize), but I guess I’ve become a nuisance. I’ll just take my leave before I say something stupid…er. Adieu!
In that case, maybe don’t open with telling me not to correct people if it bugs them and follow up with scare quotes while assuming the very worst of me.
