In which it is explained to me that you need permission to post a link on the internet.
Thanks for catching those mistakes on Journeyman. However I would appreciate it if you weren’t so surly with your review.
Granted, it was a verbose fic (more of an experiment to see how far I could push my writing, if anything) and those errors did take you out of the experience. However the way you pointed it out gives me the impression you were more interested on dragging me through the dirt than you were on constructively criticizing. That is not acceptable.
Regards,
HarrimanStandard
As for “Machiavellian”, well…dictionary definition aside, connotation is the killer here. I was using it as a pejorative stand-in for prioritizing self-interest over anything else, because that’s what I interpret “The Prince” to condone. In hindsight, that actually implies a lack of ethics on Drew’s part. Even early on in AG he is fairly ethical, otherwise he would have been perfectly apathetic towards Harley bilking May into using Assist in the Grand Festival.
The point still stands though. My writing will have flaws even after it is published, so I appreciate feedback. Your attention to detail did help considerably and I would be interested in working with you in the future.
Now as for tone, and my reaction to it–I read on your sub-forum that you’re actually a really helping person, and your guides are actually quite interesting. This is going to be the most absurd and out-there question ever, but are you trying to teach me how to write Drew by adopting his tone? Clever. I’d love it if that’s the case.
It’s a complete 180 but I feel like my first message was a bit of an over-reaction to the tone of your review. Like that one moment in “Now That’s Flower Power!” on the beach, with May scuttling in the sand and whining while Drew smugly holds her back with one hand. Definitely something for me to laugh about in the future.
Sincerely,
Harrimanstandard
P.S. Drop me a line if you ever need analysis of anything related to trains or railroads and such, or just want to write a guide on how to write about them without making a litany of “Just Train Wrongs”. It’s specialized knowledge but as my profile implies, it’s my specialty.
So I guess talk to them if you have a train in your fic.
As for the Elesa part, I edited it out but I’m not sure what I was trying to write there.
its going to have a plot. DOn’t worry bud.
Just to let you know if you didn’t read this is literally based off of a dream i had. I am writing the dream
Also it being a dream is possibly the worst excuse.
Thanks for the advice. I’ll get to those corrections :D
Hello! Sorry, I was asleep when you sent the review and the site wasn’t working until recently with reviews. Also I honestly expected a review of this nature on my other story so color me surprised when I saw it here. :)
For the capitalization, I’ve seen you make that comment before. I’m not the best with grammar, I’ll be the first to admit that, but the show seems to use the Pokemon and their name itself as a proper noun. I’ve been hemming and hawing over how to handle it, so I went with the fandom common one. I’ve been considering changing it though, so thanks for pointing it out!
For your second point, yes trainers can start at ten. I’m not sure that means that they all necessarily do. We see how well it goes for an ordinary boy like Ash (all meeting of Legendaries aside). And with your third point, you actually hit the nail on the head on the second point. In certain situations, people can refer to their stepparent as their default parent, especially if they don’t know their birth parent very well or if they’re particularly close. For example, my stepfather has been around more than my birth father, so I tend to refer to them as my father. Also, Anabel is the POV character for the chapter, so her knowledge may be limited by what she’s been told and gleaned throughout her life and how she refers to things. I’m sorry that wasn’t clear though. It was meant to be a vague because it wasn’t a part of what she was thinking about. I’ll clarify more thoroughly in the next chapter so thank you for bringing it up.
I hope you return for the next chapter. Thank you for the review again. :)
Thank you for review.
And special thanks for pointing out mayor errors. I’m still quite new to writing, but I’ll work on that.

While I appreciate the attempt in trying to improve my writing, I write in my own idiosyncratic manner. so I would ask that instead of reviewing how I write you instead review WHAT I wrote. The idea was not to use perfect english, be grammatically perfect or completely free of typos.
Even the greatest writers fuck up.
The purpose of this short story was, quite frankly, a short story that was inspired from a pokemon move, namely Memento. Which is all it should be looked at as. A short story written by a shitty writer in the hopes that someone actually likes it.
I’ve seen that you’ve posted quite harsh reviews on both “Hoping for a Miracle” by MarioSpinDash and “Beautiful Ruin” by Candykaykay2001, two Pokémon fanfictions.
BUT! That’s not what I wanted to talk about. I might disagree on Pokémon capitalization, as I’m writing more with intuition than proper english grammar –
So I want to request you make your review a bit more readable, please. It’s good advice on direct speech, but it’s written as a whole paragraph without any spaces. It’s hard to read, so please write it like how you write your guides (Writing Guide Part One: Grammar) in your forum. Written like that, the author will surely benefit much more from your advice.
[I might disagree on Pokémon capitalization, as I’m writing more with intuition than proper english grammar – ]
You just failed to capitalize English while explaining you think you can trust your intuition.
English’s “proper grammar” and your intuition should be the same thing if you’re exposed to proper grammar in the first place. That’s why pokemon fanfic in particular tends to have all sort of related capitalization errors, one mistake is making people more likely to screw up all the rest because now their intuitive grasp of the underlying rule is shot to hell.
And of course, I’ve seen no further sign of their name while looking at the reviews as I go, because just having strong enough opinions on how reviews ought to be written to bug me doesn’t mean you have strong enough opinions to actually review.

Wow haha, that sure is a lot of information! I find it very useful though so thank you :)
I see what I can improve now, it’s still hard though since I started writing just 3 months ago and English isn’t my native language.
First, I really appreciate the feedback and it will all be duly noted, and while I can justify some of my choice, most of what you said is very right, and will be corrected in later chapters. For starters, your first criticism, I am afraid I don’t quite understand you when you say it is a summary. A summary purpose is to briefly explain a story or event that has already happened, without giving much detail about things in between. And While chapter one certainly has qualities of one it is not a summary (afterall, what sense does it make to have chapter one a story be the summary of the actual story) I was not quite sure how to start an epic, Kingdom wars story without explaining a bit of the backstory and how and why the war started to begin with. I suppose I could have done this in smaller doses throughout the story but I personally don’t like reading stories like that, and I write the way I like reading.
However, I will take what you said into consideration and I am just flattered someone as prestigious and experienced as someone such as yourself, thank you very much for leaving a comment, and I at least hope you check back on the story and check for more flaws in the future
Thank you very much,
KiwiKat =3

Thanks! I’m getting really rusty, aren’t I?
I apologize for my carelessness; it must’ve been frustrating to just see a whole mess of code instead of what you had originally wanted to see. I know this probably wasn’t necessary, but I felt I should apologize for not double checking my docs before publishing my story. Again, I’m sorry.

There’s a special place in hell for you so I can shoot you with a sniper rifle
——————–
Here we see the moment after someone told SniperHawk61 that I mentioned guns in a way that didn’t involve how they were all that kept us from Obama’s death panels.
Incidentally, I’d like to take a moment to again thank everyone who loves guns to that special irrational degree and isn’t afraid to tell the world about it. Without you, our many American ficwriters would be able to keep arguing that no culture would risk harm to children. Thank you. Thank you so, so much.
I refer to it as an “omnipresent” issue because the issue has always been there, waaay before Serena earned her third Princess Key. My evidence? Look at every episode of XY thus far in which she has struggled with her emotions. She doesn’t have her 3rd key yet in canon, so clearly, the issue existed before she obtains this hypothetical 3rd key. She just doesn’t always allow it to be the most important problem on her mind; her goals and dreams, as well as everyday needs such as hunger, sleep, and the like, generally take precedence. I stated that it has “risen” because it has “risen” from her subconscious, where it lingered as a nagging little issue tucked to the back of her mind, to the forefront of her consciousness. It’s always there, but not always front & center as the most important dilemma in her life.
I’m sorry that my wording for the second example isn’t clearer to you, but I thought that the preposition “at” made it clear that this point was her present state. Otherwise, I would’ve said “was past the point” and not “was at the point.”
Finally, I’m pretty sure that every Pokemon game capitalizes Pokemon names because they ARE proper nouns. Real-life animals don’t exist in the Pokemon world, so that argument doesn’t really hold water… (I hope that didn’t sound too harsh~)
Thank you again, though. I’ll pay more attention to possibly ambiguous wording in the future~~
[ because they ARE proper nouns.]
A proper noun is the personal name of an individual or place.
1. I didn’t notice that my title wasn’t capitalzied properly. .
2. Thanks for clearing that up. I was actually thinking about that today. I wasn’t completely sure.
3. I didn’t use “stated” or “questioned” as all-purpose speech tags. (Or at least I think I didn’t). I only used “stated” whenever someone said something without any particular emotion, or any extra emphasis. And, I only used “questioned” whenever they asked a question. I realize that that might not be EXACTLY the proper thing to do, but I didn’t want to use “she asked” over and over and over again.
4. While you’re right that Hydrogen Peroxide slows the healing proccess of wounds, it still does disinfect wounds. Also I just didn’t want to say “She pulled out a generic orange bottle with a mysterious liquid inside!”
But, thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate it when people take the time to help me out like this. Despite the flaws, I hope you enjoyed the story regardless! ^_^
There is one time I’m pretty sure hydrogen peroxide does actually disinfect injuries safely. So:
If your problem is canker sores, go for it. For anything else at all, NO.
I looked at the document and when I saved it it seemed fine.
……………. speak of the devil – Officer Jenny lol. Thanks for the criticism but could you be a bit less harsh next time X_X Thanks for helping me reshape the story though…..
Thanks for the honest review. I’m glad someone actually said that something was wrong with the story.
With the issue of the capitalization, I guess that’s just how I write, and I don’t plan on changing it any time soon. I understand the need to capitalize what’s needed, but I guess this is just how I roll.
As for the pacing, I really have to admit that I’m really bad at it. Yes, the story is slow and it feels like its draggy. I can’t fix this one immediately, but I’ll try to work on making it a little more exciting and have the story feel like it was actually moving.
And the last comment. Well… yeah, I guess it was kinda distracting when I read it again. I’ll keep that in mind.
I wouldn’t blame you if you dropped the story immediately, and I noticed you’ve written a lot, so you’re pretty much giving me handy advice, and I appreciate that. However, i do hope that I can improve and that you’d still be willing to put up with my story.
Thanks for the review and have a nice day.

Hello, thank you for the review. Also, thanks for pointing out my lack of proficiency in English.
Actually I kind of hope that people without much exposure to the Pokemon manga, anime, and games can learn more about pokemon through my work, thus the introduction about pokemon.
Also, the first chapter was supposed to be an introduction rather than an actual chapter, which is why it is rather short. The story will actually start at the second chapter. If you really think that there is something that should be changed, I am willing to hear about your opinions.
Thank you.

Thank you for taking your time to correct my grammatical errors with explanation. I shall try to put what you said into practice. Mostly when i upload the next chapter this would be done. So once again thank you.
Yes, I know I was abrupt with the mob but i promise that it will be explained after a few chapters. As for the police it was stated in the news that is location was unknown. So you can regard it as they are willing to spread the news since they know that inevitably he must come out sometime and someone will see or know him.
Thanks for the feedback, I’ll keep note of this. The capitalized Pokemon is just my spellcheck being stupid, I have to fix that.
…I really need to redo this prologue, don’t I.
Yes, looking back, this was kind of rushed, and the things don’t link up. I may just go without a prologue. I’m rubbish at writing things in a super-duper serious history fashion.
I should just go and write a non-serious fanfiction now. I’m sorry you had to read this crap.
There is something that I am still confused with, and so I would like to ask for your help on it. Regarding possession and the use of the apostrophe, I was originally taught the method of (Ash’) while (Ash’s) was a contraction of Ash is. However, I have seen these two methods clash, and it made things a lot more confusing.
I read over your writing guides, and I get that using an apostrophe at the end of a name with s would indicate possession (Jesus’). That and the pronouns I get. But what about other names? How do I distinguish between Ash’s (Ash possesses) and Ash’s (Ash is). This is where my main confusion sits, and I hope to fully clarify this for the future chapters I already have written.
Other than that, thanks for the notes. I have already gone back and made the changes for the other details. And yes, I know the summary is not the best. If I could, I would improve the summary and even the title if need be. Also, thank you for your writing guides.

Hello!
Thank you for your input, as I mentioned in my profile I am a beginner when it comes to writing fanfiction and English is not my first language. Also, no one in my family is good at English and I just moved to a new city so I don’t have anyone that can proofread for me. Also, the reason I picked Ash as the main character was because I have always liked the fanfics with similar plots and wanted to try one myself. I am planning to write another pokemon-fanfiction with an OC-main character in the future. Yes, I do really have a weird and awkward way of writing but I will try to improve in the future.

Thanks for the lesson! I’ve always had trouble with grammar. I’ll keep your review in mind.
Sorry, I’m still new to this
Komaeda’s Absolute Hope GExcuse me. I got a review from you on one of my fanfics earlier this month.I have no problems with people who review bluntly or whatever, so I wasn’t going to bother coming to you about your review, despite how, frankly, bad it was. I, in fact, appreciate reviews like this sometimes.
However, my friend has informed me that you run a blog about reviewing Pokemon fics, and that you posted not only your review to my fic, but a link to it on there (I presume so your little followers can come and also give me a stink about my fanfiction). I gave you no permission to do such a thing.
I came to fanfiction to my be relaxed about writing and post my less appealing pieces so that they’re out of my head when I’m writing my good works. I didn’t come here to relearn trivial grammar points that my teachers have taught me before, I haven’t come here to be part of your annoying social experiments. I expect you to please take down any reference to my story from your blog. It’s on the January 2nd post.
Now, since you’re so fond of reviewing, here’s a review for you.
It’s a waste of time to tell fanfiction writers about grammar. The site isn’t about grammar, it’s about storytelling. You said nothing about my story, instead wasting 2 full paragraphs on grammar points that matter pretty little. That’s not a very good review, and it honestly helps me with nothing; keep in mind that reviewing is about helping people improve their writing, not lashing out at the most trivial parts of the author’s grammar. Your review helped me improve nothing in my fic. Also, have you heard of a compliment sandwich? It’s like, you know, the most basic part of reviewing. You give a compliment, then your criticism, then end with a second compliment. That way, you help people without leaving a sour taste in your mouth. Because frankly, if you don’t compliment people, people aren’t gonna want to compliment you. It’s a two way street.
You can post this PM on your blog, or on your profile, or write it on your arm. Frankly, Scarlet, I don’t give a damn. But I do expect a PM in return confirming that you’ve removed reference to my story from your blog page.
I have nothing left to say to you.
[Also, have you heard of a compliment sandwich? It’s like, you know, the most basic part of reviewing. You give a compliment, then your criticism, then end with a second compliment. ]
It really isn’t, and I’m going to continue my reviewing method of complimenting people when I mean it and not lying in a cheap attempt to manipulate people into doing what I want.
[Frankly, Scarlet, I don’t give a damn.]
I can tell how very much you don’t, yes.
Komaeda’s Absolute Hope G
https://www.fanfiction.net/u/4976495/
——————–
Like you said, I don’t give a damn. I don’t really care about your reply or your
criticism. I just want confirmation that any mention of my story on your blog is deleted.
I have no problem with my story being in the public or getting reviews on it, even if
they’re harsh or whatever. I just don’t want my story being posted in places without my
permission.
While you don’t need to do the compliment bullshit, you should at least review the entire
story instead of jumping around the main parts. Grammar isn’t the main part. In fact, you
completely ignored the main request of my PM in your ‘review’ of it. I’d like it if you
cut to the chase this reply.
Take reference to my story off your blog.
——————–
This just underlines why posting the reviews is so necessary – if someone’s already this deep into a conspiracy theory about how it’s all to harass them, what’s more likely to get me trouble in the future: leaving it up and letting the total lack of further reviews speak for themselves when they claim this, or taking it down so they can spread the word that I was trying to get everyone to harass them but they stopped me just in time?
Maybe stop being batshit crazy and it’d be easier for me to accommodate you.
Edit:
Komaeda’s Absolute Hope G

——————–
No, it’s not a conspiracy theory. At this point, I no longer care about you or your
followers (the only reason I know about your stupid reply is through my friend telling
me).
I don’t mind getting reviews. Until your review, I had never approached reviewers about
harsh reviews.
However, you aren’t just reviewing. When you collect people’s reviews on your blog which
they may not be aware of and then further insult(because frankly that’s what it amounts
to sometimes)or criticize them on a website where they don’t know to respond, you’re
trolling people. It’s one thing with the reviews, it’s another thing with flat out
demeaning people essentially behind their back. You’re not even nice to people who are
polite to you.
I no longer care about the link or the reviews, because it’s become apparent that you’re
just another internet troll.
You’re blocked. Have fun being a bully (among other words).
——————–
So that sure was a thing that just happened.
There is one time I’m pretty sure hydrogen peroxide does actually disinfect injuries safely.
NGL, I’m 25 years old and it never occurred to me this myth wasn’t true >.> My mother was a huge believer in it, so we did it all the time.
Well, not long ago it was actual scientific fact! Science knew it killed bacteria, they just hadn’t done a careful enough study to see if it killed bacteria significantly better than it killed your own cells and if the trauma of getting flesheating liquid dumped onto an open wound might have some other negative side effects. Bear in mind it wasn’t so long ago people were trying to wash out wounds with boiling water because hey, sterilization is great right?
Thinking about it, hydrogen peroxide might also work better on old wounds where they weren’t cleaned out and now the bacteria is infesting the dead tissue. That might be why it works on canker sores so well. It dissolves all organic matter really well but live cells will produce chemicals to fight it, so it should eat dead tissue much faster than living.
(Unless you’re one of the mutants who can’t produce the neutralizing chemicals, in which case this goes very poorly for you.)
“but it was a dream i had!”
You know, I have little sympathy to this because I actually did write a few short stories based on my dreams back in the day. Typically, I would throw out half of my dream because it didn’t make sense to a waking mind, throw out half of what was left because it didn’t make sense to anyone but me and heavily edit the rest to turn a cool but confusing idea into something approaching an interesting story.
Dreams can totally serve as a source of inspiration, but that’s all they are, certainly they’re not complete stories.
“Actually I kind of hope that people
without much exposure to the Pokemon manga, anime, and games can learn
more about pokemon through my work, thus the introduction about pokemon.”
Ah, to be young and naive and think your fic would be the one to penetrate the readers with the knowledge of your beloved franchise…
“Also, the first chapter was supposed to be an introduction rather than an actual chapter, which is why it is rather short.”
I must say, I hate this attitude. Trust between the author and the readers is the foundation of good fiction. If the author doesn’t trust the readers to figure out what’s going on without holding their hand all the way, and when readers can’t trust the author to put an effort into writing instead of lazily copying what was done thousands of times before, well, there is no point in reading.
But I suppose that without love it cannot be seen./Umineko reference because it’s always appropriate.
“You can post this PM on your blog, or on your profile, or write it on your arm.”
Well, that was an epic tantrum. Also funny they should give you a permission to post the PMs since, you know, they contain links back to their profile and are marked with their ffn names. I can maybe understand them not noticing the former, but the latter is kinda hard to miss.
Dreams can totally serve as a source of inspiration, but that’s all they are, certainly they’re not complete stories.
And such great inspiration! Maybe the most annoying part is that often they’re not writing just every dream down, they picked the dream because there was some aspect of it that made them think would make for a great and original story, and then you’re lucky if you can even make out a glimmer of it beneath all the other random stuff they didn’t clean off it.
“……………. speak of the devil – Officer Jenny lol.”
I have no idea what they’re getting at there.
also what in the fuck is a princess key
‘”……………. speak of the devil – Officer Jenny lol.”
I have no idea what they’re getting at there.’
Farla is fun police?
“also what the fuck is a princess key”
They’re basically ribbons. The current series of the anime has these things called Pokémon Showcases, and one of the main characters, Serena, takes part in them. Only girls are allowed to enter because reasons, hence the name “princess”.
Seriously? Fucking gag me.
I mean, there are sometimes reasons to exclude men from traditionally feminine activities (i.e. so they won’t take the space over and pretend it was their idea all along), but I doubt that’s what’s supposed to be going on here.
Oh, they’ve most likely come up with some reason to justify it, but I’m not sure that I want to know what it is. It’s probably something along the lines of “only girls like girly things like cooking (yes, that’s also a part of the competition) and dressing up, and if they like battling instead, then they’re not real girls.”
It wouldn’t even be as terrible if contests hadn’t already been established as pretty equal opportunity (relatively speaking, of course, since this is Pokémon that we’re talking about). The people who competed in them were varied (including, for lack of better terms, “masculine” women and “feminine” men that weren’t depicted as odd or pathetic). Some of the women even got to wear suits!
It’s probably something along the lines of “only girls like girly things like cooking (yes, that’s also a part of the competition)
Oh jesus christ and here I was still feeling mildly annoyed just that they’d made May go into regular contests over battling and implicitly gendered it in the process.
You know, in spite of all of its problems, at least the Unova series managed to do away with contests and have Iris be an actual trainer. It was also literally the only series where one of Ash’s rivals was a girl.
I don’t know why things are so bad now after they genuinely seemed to be getting a bit better.
Well, Iris gets to be eventual champion, so she’s tied to actual battling.
Maybe the games and anime are pulling in different directions? The anime gave us our first female professor, but she was pretty awful compared to Juniper. The games very nearly started off letting us play as a girl and had plenty of female trainers from start to finish. When they introduced contests, it was more traditionally feminine but they didn’t do anything to indicate it was for girls. Meanwhile the anime introduces Misty only to slide her out of relevance followed by the next companions being into contests. And the champion they invented was another guy while it’s the game that started giving us female champions. As much as I didn’t like Bianca’s game story, she actually got to be a trainer and then when she stopped she got to do something else rather than ending up in the contest ghetto, and the most recent big contest thing had a female star but with a male counterpart who’s almost as good.
Only girls are allowed to enter because reasons, hence the name “princess”.
reasons = so they stop pretending they have what it takes to be trainers, silly wimmin
Yeah, pretty much. Of the two female mains this series, one is a small child who’s too young to battle, and the other is Serena. Of the six recurring rivals, the three female ones are competing with Serena to collect princess keys and become the Kalos Queen, whilst the three male ones are competing with Ash to collect gym badges and become the Kalos Champion.
The only good thing that I can say is that Bonnie, the aforementioned small child, actually shows an interest in battling and becoming a trainer at some point in her life like her older brother, a gym leader and the brains of the group. She’s also not afraid of getting her hands dirty dealing with pokémon, although this is often just portrayed as a juvenile, tomboyish behaviour that she’ll eventually grow out of.
What’s considered a rival exactly? Trevor is working on being the best Wikipedia editor so I don’t know who you’re counting as the third male rival. I counted four female princess rivals. Jesse is pretty much being an exception that follows the rules.
That’s a very strange characterization of Bonnie. She’s portrayed as juvenile because she’ll IS a small child. I don’t she how this implies something different. She’s also seems to be set up to be a main action star in XY and Z.

I too remember the days when I had hope and shit. But then I realized every anime I thought was setting up “girls can do boy stuff too!!!” was actually setting up “sometimes little girls don’t realize boy stuff isn’t for them! but they grow out of it, don’t worry, and it’s funny to watch them be dumb until then.”
The confirmation this is inevitable is found in the fact she’s looking up to her older brother and not an older female trainer. Eventually she’ll learn that her childish adoration of her older sibling blinded her to the fact that he boy, she girl, and she’ll grow up and wear dresses for contests.
“What’s considered a rival exactly? Trevor is working on being the best Wikipedia editor so I don’t know who you’re counting as the third male rival.”
Trevor has at least one gym badge and battles Ash on more than one occasion. He might be interested in photographing every pokémon that he can, but he’s still competing with Ash in the league challenge. That’s what distinguishes him from other recurring trainers whom Ash battles such as Sanpei and Alain.
What’s really frustrating about it is that it goes against the characterisation that’s present in the games. Neither Tierno nor Trevor collect any badges in X and Y, with the former even saying that he doesn’t enjoy battling and wants to become a dancer. In the anime, the the two boys are trainers, and Shauna, who was more into battling than either of them, is a performer.
“I counted four female princess rivals. Jesse is pretty much being an exception that follows the rules.”
My mistake. I’d completely forgotten about Jessie.
“That’s a very strange characterization of Bonnie. She’s portrayed as juvenile because she’ll IS a small child. I don’t she how this implies something different. She’s also seems to be set up to be a main action star in XY and Z.”
Yeah, Farla got it spot on. It’s similar to how the battle girl trainer class appears in the games, but female black belts don’t.
