You wouldn’t capitalize animal or mouse or dragon, so you shouldn’t capitalize words like pokemon or pikachu or charizard. The only time you should capitalize it is if you’re using it as the pokemon’s name, ie, Ash’s pikachu is called Pikachu. This is because you only capitalize when it’s a proper noun, which are the names of places or things. Similar reasoning should be applied to any other words you’re thinking of capitalizing, like telephone or trainer. Or professor.

Dialogue is written as “Hello,” she said or “Hello!” she said, never “Hello.” She said or “Hello.” she said or “Hello,” She said or “Hello” she said. The only exception to this is if the next sentence doesn’t contain a speech verb, which is a verb describing how the dialogue is said. (“Speak” is not a speech verb.) In that case it’s written as “Hello.” She grinned, never “Hello,” she grinned or “Hello,” She grinned or “Hello.” she grinned. Note that something isn’t a speech verb just because it’s a sound you make with your mouth, so generally stuff like laughed or giggled is in the second category. Furthermore, if you’re breaking up two complete sentences it’s “Hi,” she said. “This is it.” not “Hi,” she said, “this is it.” or “Hi,” she said “this is it.” And if you’re breaking up a sentence in the middle, it’s “Hi. This,” she said, “is it.” The same punctuation and capitalization rules apply to thoughts, except you don’t use quotation marks or any other ones with thoughts.

You wouldn’t capitalize animal or mouse or dragon, so you shouldn’t capitalize words like pokemon or pikachu or charizard. This is because you only capitalize when it’s a proper noun, which are the names of places or things. [“Really, Misty? This is his first ever League, the literal hardest and most difficult thing he’s done in his entire life. If you recall, our entire journey was filled with challenges to overcome. Ash repeatedly risked his life and mental health just getting to this point. Do you really think it’s unfair of him to be upset that all that effort didn’t get him as far as he wanted? This is hardly something to criticize, especially when he still managed to be a great sport towards Ritchie,” Brock pointed out.]

If you find yourself writing long paragraphs to argue with characters by proxy, maybe rethink.

And no – it wasn’t the most important thing ever. Other characters handled losing there just fine, and Ash has been through worse, and multiple times at that. If anything, this being “the literal hardest and most difficult” anything is wrongly was going through Ash’s mind and why his friends were pushing so hard for him to move the hell on instead of wallowing in self-pity.

[“While that may be true, it’s also true that Ash did nowhere near as well as he could’ve,” Professor Oak started. “If he weren’t so sure of himself, and trained his Charizard properly, then he could’ve gotten much further,” he harshly concluded. Brock just frowned and raised an eyebrow. Ash balled himself up a bit tighter on the bed.

“You may have a point, but that’s frankly a really inconsiderate and uncalled for way to put it, especially right in front of Ash,” Brock said bluntly, frowning at Professor Oak. No matter who he was, he wasn’t about to be so harsh to one of his best friends at his most vulnerable. “Think about it. He’s eleven, and started when he was ten. This was his first League, and he had no way of knowing Charizard would turn out like this. And he’s depressed right now.”]

Oh god. Look. If you think Ash’s friends should’ve been more sympathetic, then just write them as more sympathetic instead of nominating one of them as Supreme Ash Understander.

Also, no way of knowing Charizard would refuse to fight except the part where Charizard regularly refused to fight, and how everyone told him to stop sending out Charizard, and how he kept doing it anyway because if Charizard did fight he’d usually win. He cared more about winning than he did his terrible relationship with his pokemon or the part where he was getting victories he didn’t earn, and then when it really mattered, it cost him. It doesn’t make him the worst person to ever live, but it was a flaw, not the world conspiring against him.

And now you’ve got Ash crying about how nobody handed him the exact answer to his problem because that totally existed but they were all too self-centered to realize he didn’t know, and then everyone beats themselves up because Ash is a tiny baby who is so amazing in every way for such a tiny helpless baby and then they are SHOCKED, just SHOCKED to hear that Team Rocket would do something that inconvenienced a child because criminals have such high moral standards normally, and pokemon attacking humans is suddenly serious business despite him getting electrocuted by his buddy every other episode as a gag.

[So this might seem a little dramatic]

That’s not really what I’d choose. Intense secondhand embarrassment, maybe.

Ash is not a delicate little flower. Everybody starts at ten. Ash is being held to the same standards as everybody else. You’re writing this like the rest of the cast and world are adults and they just suddenly registered that wait, this adult trainer is… actually a child??? And no, the storyline would not have been improved by other people jumping in to fix everything for him while removing Team Rocket and other threats.

Blocked! I guess that was wise. Also god, remember when people just wrote their own OC instead of endless AUs based on how everyone “should” be?

Nine, because all bows before Ash.

Furthermore, if you’re writing a fic from the pokemon’s viewpoint discussing pokemon species in general, it’s a good idea to let your pokemon have actual names instead of treating the species as their name.

[Flareon stared coldly at her son. “It’s best you get such ideas out of your mind, Eevee.” ]

[ “I never knew what he was. Your grandmother insisted he was a Vaporeon until the day she died. ]

So. The idea that various communities of eeveelutions will only know some of their options is an interesting one and plays nicely with the idea of eevee as tied to their environment and situation. The idea that members of the community would react with searing denial about the other options is less so. Grandma was okay enough with other evolutions hook up with one but would rather insist he was a horribly mangled vaporeon than a perfectly okay glaceon? And her daughter then continues the tradition by trying to convince her son that other evolutions don’t exist? Why? It doesn’t even lead anywhere, since she ultimately gives him her blessing to go look for a stone that’ll turn him into an umbreon and even encourages him to try to find out about other evolutions as well.

“Its” is the possessive form. “It’s” means “it is” only.

[Upon defeating the final member of Kanto’s Elite Four, Lance, Anthony Blue was left with a team of deceased Pokémon with only a Hypno as its remaining member. Though his victory was the first in a long line of defeats, he was also the only trainer to make it so far in the Nuzlocke Division in many years.]

…

[Had it not been for Lance defending the original purpose of the Nuzlocke Division, to produce a stronger relationship with Pokémon through a high-risk, high-reward competition, the Division itself would have been disbanded.]

How exactly does the defense that actually, it’s about producing a stronger relationship with pokemon!!! work when apparently all pokemon but one dying is the best result they’ve gotten in “many years”? You can’t have any kind a relationship with a pokemon once they’re dead.

Next time try taking a half second to think about if what you wrote is unspeakably stupid.

[“Now, Tim. Your permission form has been signed by your aunt yesterday, so there shouldn’t be any problem with the paperworks. I also have notified the Pokémon League about you so you can challenge the gyms and elite four. You, however, don’t have a starter pokémon. Do you have any pokémon that can-”

“Here he is, my starter,” Tim said as he suddenly lifted Scraggy. The pokémon was surprised at this and didn’t know how to react.]

Look. If your goal is just to have him start with a pokemon he made friends with, you don’t need the canon NPCs there to take the starters or for him to head over to Juniper’s lab in the first place. Almost every character gets a pokemon from somewhere other than a professor. He can just be excited to start off and then do so, without wasting all this time trying to include the most boring and overdone parts of original trainer fic.

See, reusing the same word like this changes what should be a horrifying threat into a farce. Consider: [tensions were at an all-time high thanks to Pakistani aggression towards India, which triggered every other nuclear – equipped nation to ready their missiles in case of an exchange between the two countries.] Did you forget mid-line that the subject is nukes or could you understand that the tensions, missiles, and exchange were all of the nuclear variety?

…and things go downhill from there. So the world’s worried about those two countries nuking each other, therefore America blames China and decides to blow up everything right now. [“What?” The teen widened his eyes, jaw dropping. “How can you not know one of the Swords of Justice? They are one of the most famous Unovan legends!”

“Uhm.” Travis rubbed his cheek. “This is not Unova, it’s Kanto.”

“Kanto?” The teen blinked, scratching his hair and turning around. “Wait, so this isn’t Pinwheel Forest?”

“I sure hope it isn’t, because I thought I was in Viridian Forest.” Travis shrugged.

The teen kept blinking, before producing a PokéNav. He stared at it for a few seconds before tossing it to the ground.

“Oh, come on! That salesman told me this Town Map was accurate!” ]

Nonsense hijinks aren’t actually the secret to hilarity. The character being dumb in thinking he could find an Unovan legendary in the middle of a Kanto forest despite the fact no one around even knows what it is could be funny. But the character somehow wandering across regions without realizing it just is dumb.

I like the concept of doing this in bursts and jumps rather than plodding through all of the standard journey scene by scene…but your characterization is really lackluster. It’s just two people quirkying at each other. Sometimes one is the straight man, sometimes the other. They’re ignorant of whatever basic thing is necessary to set up a joke. This looks like it’s supposed to be character-driven, or at least there’s certainly nothing else here, but your characters have none, they’re just whatever fits the dialogue of the moment.

Capitalize your title properly.

Opening your story with a character waking up for the day is generic and horribly, horribly overdone, and to be honest, it’s so incredibly dull and boring a start that even if I hadn’t seen it, very literally here, thousands upon thousands of times before, I would still tell you you should have started at some other, interesting point.

[“I…I know.” Pina sighed. “It won’t be for long, will it?”

“No, of course not. Just until Celeste gets better.”]

…

[But ‘a little while’ would translate into five horribly turbulent years.]

Why, exactly? This is a world that hands out free healing to pokemon trainers, it’s hard to believe that when it comes to sick humans, it’s wholly up to the families to deal with it and nobody can just institutionalize her until her brain chemistry stabilizes.

And if she’s twelve now, and this was five years ago, she developed schizophrenia at eight? Or seven, actually, since unless we’re to believe that the instant she found medication that seemed to work she went on a journey there must’ve been a non-turbulent year after those five. She could have an entire team of shinies and it’d be more plausible. Why is she even going on a pokemon journey? It’s a high stakes affair, which you’d want to keep her away from even before the other considerations like being all alone when something happens. And even assuming that normally it doesn’t set schizophrenics off, and even assuming she had decent treatment which she obviously didn’t if her sister had to stay home to handle her, the fact she manifested symptoms so impossibly young means no mental health professional could say with any confidence how she’d react.

If you want it to make any sense that she’d go on this journey and than her sister would be taken by surprise when she inevitably melts down, it’s got to either be that she’s only just developing full-fledged schizophrenia now or, maybe, that she’s the older sister who developed it, never left/had to come back home, and has been stable thanks to the medication for some time. That solves much of the timeline issue and explains why Pina has no idea how to handle what’s happening.

See, POKEMON MASTER at least was set after, so it had that fig leaf of “Ash COULD turn out like this!”…or more like,  “Ash’s character will change a ton regardless from growing up in my weird sword/cloak dystopia, so it’s not that big of a deal if he’s a bit OOC on top of that, right?”

This one starts mid-canon-episode with the premise that because he didn’t like what the characters say, now they say totally different things, and because he didn’t like Ash being held to standards, suddenly everyone decides preteen trainers should be treated differently but also it was always like that and they just had some sort of mass amnesia about the fact Ash is a preteen.

      1. ChildishPerspective says:

All the talk of mangling characters has me thinking of what ifs. I get the problem of just slapping a name onto a completely different character, but where is the line? Is the main issue that they still need to be recognizably that character? What if your story’s plot revolves around specific characters not being who they claimed to be?  I’m also wondering how many Ash characters look different than the actual Ash simply due to the writer’s inexperience.

        1. Farla says:

It’s a hard question in many cases, but the Ash trend is special because the authors explicitly say, “Canon sucks!!! It would be better if Ash was smarter and more ruthless and badass. Also if he had a different starter, and maybe got several legendaries before he got his starter, and if he got this list of other uber pokemon, and if he had a different family, and if the other characters were smarter and more ruthless and badass too, and if a bunch of different events happened than in canon, and…”
