Summoning Ch25

Last time on the Summoning, half-demons exist. They sound more interesting, why aren’t we following them?

WAS DEREK TRYING TO scare me? A few days ago I would have said yes, without hesitation. But now I knew it was only honesty.

God, this is just awful, awful writing.

Does the author think that the reader felt the same as Chloe and needs to be updated on the fact now he’s trustworthy? Because we know the ghosts are real the entire time, which means we know he’s right about the necromancy thing, which means we know he’s trustworthy, which means we don’t need to be told he isn’t lying at this point.

it did make me all the more determined to get at least one question answered when the nurse popped her head in to announce lights-out.
“Mrs. Talbot?”
“Yes, dear?” she said, peeking back in.
“Can we call Liz yet?

Oh, so NOW you remember her. When you’re actually talking to someone who knows about magic, the fact there’s a girl who’s a telekinetic or has a pet ghost doesn’t come up, even when discussing the issue of how many supernatural people there are in one place.

Mommy nurse says she can talk to Liz this weekend. Chloe is horrified by the time length, despite the fact that it should be tomorrow or so.

She goes to Lyle House on a Sunday and wakes up on a Monday. Monday is day one. We are currently on the night of day four. Unless dumbass no research land involves not even remembering the length of a week, “the weekend” is not a long way off, especially considering Liz disappeared at the end of day one and Chloe’s managed to ignore her burning curiosity this long.

Mommy nurse goes on to claim Liz doesn’t want to talk because she’s embarrassed,l then that she has PTSD from the experience and then that maybe Chloe will even have to wait for next weekend, which seems like a far more appropriate thing to react to.

She finally wonders if perhaps Liz is a ghost.

Even if I could dream up a reason why Lyle House would want to kill kids, what about their families? These weren’t street kids and runaways. They had parents who would notice if they vanished. Notice and care.
Are you so sure? What about Rae’s parents? So attentive, always calling and coming by to see her? And Simon and Derek’s dad? The Invisible Man?

Uh, no, parents still usually notice an actual death. It’s also just not business sense given the place is paid to take care of them. Now, if, as I suggested, parents send their kids here to get rid of them for good, it’s very different.

Then Chloe wonders if maybe, instead of being a ghost, Liz is a shaman doing astral projection.

That could explain why I could see and hear her, but not the ghosts.

Also, Liz has never manifested with other people around, so there’s no evidence she’s invisible to normal people when she does that. The fact only Chloe’s seen her so far is odd, but we actually don’t know that – perhaps Tori’s seen her too but is keeping her mouth shut.

It might also explain the poltergeist. Liz was doing that projecting stuff without realizing it, and throwing things around.

…jesus, Chloe, it’s not like there’s never been astral projection in a movie before. You must have a general idea what it means. How can you not know you’re throwing things if you’re still the one picking it up and chucking it at someone? Uncontrolled psychic power, maybe. I can see that being more like flexing a muscle you don’t quite know you have. But if it’s the same as your body, just a floating secondary version, I don’t buy it.

There’s also the fact that Chloe didn’t see any version of Liz touching the things, yet her theory Liz is astral projecting at all hinges on the idea that the Liz she’s seeing is an astral projection and not a ghost.

Plus, every time Liz shows up she’s still stuck at the point Chloe last saw her, which means she’s clearly not conscious anywhere else, so best case scenario is she’s in a coma.

Chloe continues to be a fucking moron.

Anyway, next morning (Saturday?) Derek gives Chloe a jar and tells her to start storing her pee in that so she can go off the meds again.

This would be a decent plan except for the part where Chloe hasn’t even been on the meds a week. It should still be building up in her body, so her urine should have higher concentrations over time. That’s without even getting into such basics as that there’s natural variation based on minor things like how much water she’s drinking, so two tests giving exactly the same result would be an obvious sign of this no matter what. Unless all they’re doing is checking to see if there’s any sign of the drugs at all, this doesn’t work.

Chloe doesn’t see the problem with this plan because she’s too busy being a fucking moron and needing Derek to explain over and over exactly what the plan is, until finally he stops arguing with her and tells her he doesn’t care, do what she wants.

I’d really rather not use it, but if I squirmed at the thought of stockpiling urine, it would only prove I was the flighty girlie girl he expected.

Where did “girlie girl” enter into this? No one in the place has said anything about that. And I think the flighty bit was already covered by the fact you couldn’t figure out he was trying to help you beat the drug test while he was saying it was for the drug test.

Mmm… I’m going to have to say that no, half-demons are not more interesting. Or at least the one I read about.

She was like a sight demon or something, which is probably the lamest fucking demon power ever.

She had x-ray vision and she could see in the dark as well as long distances without a scope. Also since she was probably about as bright as the protagonist of this book, she didn’t carry a sniper rifle with her everywhere… come to think of it, that’s probably why she died.

      A what.

How is that even different than a generic superpower? The point of demons is that they’re DEMONS dammit.

  2. …your reviews are way more effective than any creative writing class I’ve taken.

teachers: be creative! think about themes!

farla: DON’T BE A FUCKING MORON.

    so thanks for doing these.

A lot of schooling would probably be more effective if the teachers could rant about things.

Yeah, there’s some good advice: as the writer, always know exactly what time and day any given scene takes place on, even if the specifics aren’t mentioned in the narrative. I’ve read about people get blinded by sunlight reflected off someone’s sword on a rainy night so many times.

Wait…so…a few days ago…she was lying to herself?

OH she means that Derek’s just being honest with her, not trying to scare her.

…Those things are not mutually exclusive.
