Mixed bag today. Several people are reasonable, but one completely loses it because I obviously knew one of the authors I reviewed plagiarized their story.
Thank you for the review! It has been very helpful. I am sure you get a dozen emails a day going “But gamefreak says…” regarding whether you should capitalise names or not. And I must admit the games are inconsistent, using various capitalizations (they started all caps until gen 4 I believe?)
That is not what my question is. What it entails is why you assume the fic to be anime centered. More specifically. “I don’t watch the anime, so I’m not going to be able to review this story on content. Please tag your story as anime fic to avoid this problem. Find your story under “Manage Stories” and select it from the dropdown menu that says “World: Any” in the “Category” section.”I won’t go as far as to claim that my story paints the canon picture of Bugsy in canon, as with everything in fanfic I am taking my headcanons and what ifs and building on them, however I tried to stick as close to the games as possible. Bugsy does mention inventing u-turn, the saffron-goldenrod connection you get after beating the elite four and unlocking kanto is, as far as I know, game only. I have been told by someone who took a glance that Misty’s fear of bugs is an anime only trait. If so it must have seeped and blended with what I “knew” about the character. I’ll look forward to painting her more in the gen 2 light – which to be fair only shows us that she could be in a relationship with someone, and is annoyed at being caught.
I thank you for the ortographic corrections and you did make me wonder about some of the things I had planned. I am sure that gym leaders plan for every occurence, and a fire type not showing up in Bugsy’s planning would be an oversight. Maybe an apricorn that cures burning?
I apologise for the incovenience. I realise you must get like a dozen of these a day. I am just curious however. I agree entirely with everything else in the review. But the anime instead of game world, did confuse me.
Thank you in advance.

Yes, that’s what pinged it for me.
1h agoThank you, say I have another question that might be kind of dumb in hindsight.
The professor is not capitalized. However would “Professor Oak, and Professor Elm” be, given that those are their names, or wouldn’t it be capitalized due to them being titles and not official names?
I just want to make sure I’ll stick to as correct a spelling as possible, given I’m not an English native.

Here’s a little fact for that “Pet” thing you said. Pokemon are still technically the same thing as people, mainly because humans just so happened to want more power because of them tending to be greedy, so they created something that could theoretically catch anything, except humans, The poke ball. This is literally how it would work if the games were real in another universe. The lore even states in the Japanese version of diamond and pearl, that humans (or what was actually said, “people”) and pokémon used to get married. So don’t pick arguments with me, you little troll.P.S. Your trying to troll a person who can see the future but only for stuff that concerns himself, so I wouldn’t be able to see your future.
40m agoHey there,
Sorry about that… There’s been quite a lot of things going on in my life that make me really touchy about the things I care about.
Sincerely,
Derryk Sullivan (Derrykman)
P.s.
Please respond, because I have a few things to tell you about myself.
secs ago[Also, I forgot to mention, I ABSOLUTELY HATE the idea that pokemon are technically slaves. Pokemon are in fact, people, got it?]
Okay, but saying something does not make it so. You need to actually put in the effort of showing how they’re treated like people, which means treating them differently from in the games. Show, don’t tell.
If you’d like to talk more, this thread has a discussion on it: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/142476358/1/Pokemon-Intelligence
You should also be more careful about verifying your sources. Istwill56 is a sockpuppet of Dragon’s Blaze, a lunatic troll who is performing a harassment campaign against me by insisting everything I say is wrong regardless of what she actually believes. I could say the sky was blue and she’d say I was lying. It’s generally better to assume someone is not a troll until proven otherwise.

You know, when I posted my last Pokémon fic I got a message advising me to block you and a few others because of the possibility of getting reviews like this. I welcome criticism as long as it’s polite though, so I’m glad I didn’t bother.Anyway, to your review. I do understand where you’re coming from with the capitalisation issue. I’ve been playing, reading, and writing Pokémon for a long time, and it’s something I’ve looked into before. Honestly, I’ve become so used to seeing Pokémon names capitalised in the games themselves that I simply can’t write them any other way, it just looks completely wrong to me. I appreciate your comment and I do understand, but as long as it’s consistent I don’t see the problem in using either method.
Perhaps, but personally I got the feeling that Nanu was more interested in looking like he didn’t care than actually not caring. I highly doubt he stayed so close to Po Town just because the rent was cheap. We didn’t hear any complaints of his attitude from Hapu when she mentioned him having to give trial-goers their Poni Grand Trial, and we know how seriously Hapu takes the island traditions. Maybe I’m just being more optimistic, but I prefer to think he’s burned-out and depressed, rather than actively resentful.
That’s one way of looking at it. I did try to make it clear that Kenzo was an anomaly in Team Skull, and that his refusal to back down was a symptom of refusing to accept any sort of authority, even Nanu’s or Guzma’s, unlike the rest of the Skulls who mainly just want somewhere to fit in. I’m not sure the stigma from failing the island challenge is that great, if everyone completed all the trials I doubt they would be so impressed by the protagonist and Hau doing so. I see it more as the Gym challenge, where children do it to explore and collect a team, but only those who are really serious about battling actually concentrate on making it to the League/Grand Trials. I do think Nanu plays a role in keeping the Skulls away from serious crime, considering they are only seen as a nuisance by the rest of the islands. If Guzma hadn’t gotten involved with Aether, I’m sure his priority would have continued to be the rest of his runaways.
That got a little out of hand, but I hope it made sense. Thank you for the civility of your review, and I hope we can politely agree to disagree on some issues.
secs ago[I’m not sure the stigma from failing the island challenge is that great]
The fact that Guzma is still sore about it decades later implies otherwise, and it raises my eyebrows that so many of the sad, pathetic children in Team Skull mention failing their island challenges and show such extreme envy and bitterness towards the protagonist for succeeding. If failing the trials wasn’t a big deal, what else could have driven this many drop-outs towards a crime gang? Most people assume the grunts were abused or runaways like Guzma, yet it’s the island challenge that we’re told is the unifying factor. This paints a rather dark picture about the unhealthy weight Alolans place on the island challenge.
42m agoMaybe, but I also highly doubt that every single person you meet in Alola has completed the island challenge. Sure, everyone does a trial or two, but how many would really take it seriously enough to go all the way? We also meet that Ace Trainer outside the waste disposal site north of Malie City, and his father is frustrated with him because he gave up on his trial, not because he failed it. He’s perfectly happy when his son loses to the player, as long as he tried his hardest. Of course some families will react more badly than others though. Regarding Guzma in particular, I think his family history, and Kukui’s perceived betrayal contribute more to his anger than the island challenge does, but I’ll freely admit that I don’t pay as much attention to him as to some other characters.
Apologoes if that didn’t make sense, I just got back from a ten hour theatre shift.

Hey, just noticed your comment three months late. Sorry. I’m bad at being on top of these things.I had two copies of the story because there was a glitch with publishing the first one. By the time I figured out how to fix that, I had already uploaded the second one. As for the grammar rules, thank you, I am well-aware of proper nouns versus singulars, as most people are. But, I do honestly thank you for letting me know proper capitalization for fictional species when writing in fanfiction.

How about if you don’t like how I write don’t read or comment on it.
Blocked after this.
One author responded to one of Blaze’s warning messages by saying they wanted to keep an open mind. I responded to that response:

I appreciate your reasonableness, but I should warn you that you may make yourself a target by supporting me. Fire4Heaven (and her sockpuppets Dragon’s Blaze, Istwill56, and 20Seven2) attack authors who take my advice or publicly support me, as, sadly, evidenced here: https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12912180/
I recommend blocking her to be safe. She is a very nasty person who has harassed and slandered everyone even tangentially associated with me.
ElynaTheGreaterHi. I really do appreciate the grammar and usage advice. I’m on here writing fanfiction to become a better writer and any criticism that I can get is helpful. And while I agree with you that making other writers on this platform aware of their mistakes only makes the platform as a whole better, I also think that you could go about doing it in a slightly different way. I hope you don’t think of this advice as unwarranted–especially because some people may think your advice is unwarranted, and you thinking the same about my advice is hypocritical– but I do have a few suggestions to make your ’cause’, so to speak, more approachable. Maybe just PM each author directly? Let them know what you think without copy and pasting your suggestions onto each and every review you give. Like I said, I do appreciate the advice, but look at it from the point of view of someone who isn’t on this site to become a better writer. Some people are only here to do something that they see as fun, and they have no intention of changing their style of writing. Some of them are young, and have not had the proper training in English to even understand your advice. Some of them are foreign and are writing in a language that they are not yet fluent in. To them, your advice–especially since it is given in such a frank way–can come off as judgmental and even embarrass the writer. When you send a direct PM it saves the writer from a public beating and may even increase the chances that they consider your advice.I don’t agree with either side of this battle, yours or Fire4Heaven. There’s no need to be so acidic on a website that is meant to share each writer’s passion for the worlds they write about. That being said, I would really appreciate you taking down that comment. I am going to ask Fire4Heaven to do the same. Don’t worry, I’ve screenshotted your advice and intend to take some of it while keeping true to other parts of my writing. I hope you understand that none of this is meant to hurt you in anyway. I simply don’t like to see two groups of people fighting, especially over fanfiction. Fanfiction is something that is supposed to be fun and is meant to help people consume more content that takes place in the worlds they love to read about. Fighting only sours the joy that fanfiction can bring. Thanks :)
I just found out that it’s not possible to remove the reviews. So ignore that part of my message (sorry, I’m still kinda new here).secs ago[Maybe just PM each author directly?]
Public reviews are more effective because they spread the information to passerby as well. I’ve heard many people say they learned how to fix an error of theirs because they saw it in one of my reviews.
[I simply don’t like to see two groups of people fighting]
I don’t do that, though. I’ve just been reviewing this whole time; Dragon’s Blaze has recently gone on this weird control trip where she threatens people for listening to me. I’m not interacting with her as much as possible, though it’s hard because she keeps making new accounts to harass me.
[I also think that you could go about doing it in a slightly different way]
I’ve found my way to be most effective over the long period I’ve done this, but I always welcome more information about it, as well as more reviewers in general. Try reviewing the way you think is best, and if you get good results, tell me about it!

I guess I can appreciate that you don’t respond back to her or her friends and add to the argument. You seem like a nice person in general–at least from what I’ve read in a few bits of text. To be honest, I read your review again and I’m sorry, I didn’t read it properly. You were actually very nice in your introduction, and though the rest was frank that bit was warm and welcoming, and your last few sentences were very sweet. I still don’t totally agree with what you are doing, in that many people on this website are doing it just for fun, not to be critiqued, but I have to admit most of your advice was helpful.
I made some edits by the way. Some of the grammatical mistakes I made were simply from carelessness, and they slipped into my writing because I didn’t edit properly. The ‘breathe’ bit I did not know though, so many thanks.
Windiken01’s “stories” are mine. I know you know this cause you’ve pm’ed me about them. Yet you give him advice about the titles & even recommend a beta reader. What is wrong with you? Do you just have something against me?
secs agoWhy don’t you attack me more, I’m sure that’ll make me more likely to comply with your requests. I was sympathetic to you, but that’s waning the more you keep harassing me.
I understand that when you’re embroiled in a conflict, it can be baffling that other people don’t understand. I myself am the target of harassment campaign right now. But you can’t expect everyone to be intimately familiar with the details of your life, and you can’t act like they’re knowingly taking sides with every action. The world does not revolve around you.
Look. Why do you even care? Do you feel that Windiken is stealing reviews from you? I can review your stories right now if that’s what you want.
What’s particularly bizarre about this is that the reviews I gave were the kind that people normally hate. Why is someone so jealous I told a plagiarist the story was an unreadable mess?
Also interestingly, I initially assumed Windiken had been banned over this, because their account seems to have disappeared, though someone, likely Blaze, helpfully corrected me as soon as this post was published:

F*** you for bullying my friends!

I tried to get clarification on this, but no dice.
I find it tragically ironic that plagiarised fics tend to draw in more reviews than most new stories – even if it’s just people shouting and swearing at them. Evidently, Windiken was banned for their plagiarism, so it’s odd that the original author took such an exception to you leaving a normal review. If anything, that seems like a better way to react to a plagiarised fic – instead of feeding them attention, slap them on the wrist for mistakes which, technically, they never made.
Also, wasn’t Jackster Pearl the same person who posted that non-story rant about you a while back?
Concerning capitalization, has Gamefreak ever made an actual announcement or article that Pokemon names MUST be capitalized in story writing? I’m not saying that anyone’s right or wrong, but I hear the haters say “Gamefreaks says so!” so many times that I’m starting to get confused. Is there actually any proof of that?
Companies tend to capitalize intellectual properties — copyrighted terms are actually capitalized in English as a rule — so I wouldn’t be surprised if Pokemon Company’s internal style guide did say to capitalize property names in all materials.
That said, not only do I doubt any 12-year-olds have access that compliance guidelines for Nintendo, it doesn’t address the actual argument, which is that grammar for marketing materials and grammar for prose are necessarily different.
