The Other Pokeauthors, Part 121

“Since most people writing Pokemon fanfictions on http://www.fanfiction.net are writing anime fics anyways maybe you should consider moving over to archiveofourown where you can find almost exclusively game-centric fics. But we all know you won’t do that because you enjoy complaining about shitposts from http://www.fanfiction.net too much.”

I appreciate the feedback. I have always had some troubles with dialogue, so this is very helpful. I will heed this advice going forward with my story.

Thanks!

Hello! Thanks for taking your time in giving out some points for me to consider! c:

1. Sorry about the epithet, I guess it was force of habit from our literature courses haha! I am also partially influenced by the fanfics I used to read before (way back 2011??) and I thought it’s appropriate to describe stuffs for visualization. I’ll see what I can do about it! :D

2. Gotcha on that one! I’ll proofread my chapters regarding that! :D

3. Another impact of college stuffs, sorry. Our class doesn’t like repeating the same lexicons lol (oh yeah, shame on me, I’m enrolled in Applied Linguistics haha)

4. About that ‘flatly stated,’ I wanted it to go along with his face (sorry, I should be drawing these stories but I wanna try to write again after a long time lol), though I understand that authors and readers do not intersect sometimes (and it’s somehow the job of the writer to make things clear kyaaaa sorry) ,

5. Oh, I think that’s my identity as a writer…as others said. I also want to remember synonyms faster so I use them in my stories (though I can consider having a mini list of uncommon words and their definitions below my stories, just so they can know what those mean without bothering to google!) :D

Thanks a lot again! c:

Thanks for the review! I’m going to start this response by saying I was actually warned by other users specifically about your reviews. I’m usually open to taking negative criticism, but it seems like you missed the entire point of the prologue. It’s… a PROLOGUE lol. It’s not supposed to reveal anything, just give a “cutscene” unrelated to the main story. If you couldn’t tell by the title, it’s literally just a retelling of USUM with minor changes. I don’t really care whether or not people tune in to read it or not, I’m just writing it for personal satisfaction.

“If you just explain all of that up front… the arc becomes filler. We’re no longer figuring out the mystery with the MC, we already know everything but we have to wait most of the story for them to catch up.”

I’m not sure I agree with what you’re saying here. Unlike the games, my story is going to be focused on the MC’s development rather than Lillie’s. Revealing her plot isn’t going to reveal anything about the MC’s ambitions (whether it be Elio OR Selene). I figure 99% of people who are going to read this have already played the games, so it’s not like it’s going to add any sort of surprise factor if Lillie’s ambitions are exactly the same from the game. The surprise factor is moreso towards my characters rather than my reviewers. Cause like I said, I’m not writing this story to appease my readers, I’m writing it for personal satisfaction.

“You wouldn’t capitalize animal or mouse or dragon, so you shouldn’t capitalize words like pokemon or pikachu or charizard. The only time you should capitalize it is if you’re using it as the pokemon’s name, ie, Ash’s pikachu is called Pikachu. This is because you only capitalize when it’s a proper noun, which are the names of places or things. Similar reasoning should be applied to any other words you’re thinking of capitalizing, like trainer or professor or gym.”

I take issue with this, as well. Have you ever played the Pokemon games or watched the show? Pokemon names, even if referred to informally, are ALWAYS capitalized. That’s not going to change in my story either because one user thought it was weird. In fact, I’ve seen more examples of Pokemon names being capitalized rather than not. Even on fansites they are capitalized. The same goes for moves and locations. I don’t really care if you don’t capitalize animals, since they aren’t the same as animals.

Anyways, thanks for your review. Like I said, I’m usually open to taking negative criticism (believe me, I’ve had another account on here and it was flamed to shit cause in all honesty my story blew), but your review seemed like nitpicking based on your personal preferences rather than constructive criticism.

secs ago[but your review seemed like nitpicking based on your personal preferences]

Yes. A review is an expression of personal preference. There’s no such thing as an objective review. If you don’t agree with my views, you’re free to ignore me. I already explained this in the review. It was genuinely constructive, though. I genuinely believe the points I brought up would make for a better story. If you disagree that’s fine, but it’s not fair to say something is deconstructive just because you disagree with it.

Capitalization arguments go here: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread

13h agoGotcha, I’m going to go with my capitalization instead. There are more examples of capitalized names being canon rather than not, and that thread you linked is just another fanon author giving their perspective. There’s no official way to do it, so I’ll stick with the way the games have it done because that’s the only example in official media I have to go by.

secs ago[There’s no official way to do it]

Yes, there is. Common nouns aren’t capitalized. That is the official rule of grammar in English.

You can still do it anyway — artistic license and all — but as with all writing decisions, it’s not about what someone does, it’s why. It makes sense in a video game where it’s helpful to make important gameplay elements stand out, but capitalizing common nouns in prose is jarring, confusing, and disorientating. This is why I am such a stickler for grammar in general; grammatical rules have been refined over a long time to produce the most logical and readable output for everyone.

Choices should be made for a reason. Color outside the lines, yes, but do so because you’re drawing a new picture, not because you’re scribble-checking to see if the ballpoint pen still has ink.

17m agoOkay, I’m gonna give you the same advice you just gave me. Just like how you said I’m free to ignore your review, if you don’t like the way I write, you’re free to ignore my story.

I came to this site to express myself, not to take grammar lessons from a grammar nazi.

secs ago[I came to this site to express myself, not to take grammar lessons from a grammar nazi.]

Then you shouldn’t have chosen to express yourself on a website with a public comment feature. There are plenty of personal blog sites that give you more control over who can read and who can comment if that’s what you prefer.

44m agoOkay this is getting annoying at this point cause you clearly have nothing better to do. I’m not sure why you’re so hell bent on me conforming to your capitalization style. It’s not going to happen. So if that’s all you have to add, then just leave me alone.

secs agoAnd I’m not sure why this is the hill you’re choosing to die on, yet here we are.

I don’t bother anyone about the same issue twice. You’re welcome to block me regardless, but I am politely informing you that I’m not the only person who cares about grammar on the internet. You’re not going to be able to avoid getting unsolicited comments entirely just by blocking me. If it’s unsolicited comments themselves that bother you, it’s in your best interests to move to a site that isn’t built around them.

Firstly I would like to thank you for the corrections. I swear I went through it with a fine-toothed comb! Lol

Secondly Id just like to reiterate that Zapdos did not *see* the boy, and he didnt know how dangerous the Zapdos was until *after* putting himself in danger. Also different personalities behave differently, I strongly base a lot of my work on H. P. Lovecraft; he was a very frail child and was scared of everything because he was very prone to nightmares.

I may take another look at the story when I make those corrections to see if there is a way to communicate that more clearly.

Look man, as much as I love your ctrl+c, ctrl+v review we gotta clear some shit up. For example, Brenden is a character from the games, not the anime, therefore this story can be ‘tagged’ as World:Any. Not that it really fucking matters because this is http://www.fanfiction.net not AO3, tags literally do not matter.

Secondly, if GameFreak capitalizes Pokemon names as Pikachu and Charizard I’m going to listen to them and not some 12 year old with a cat avatar on the internet.

Thirdly if formatting dialogue as “Hello,” she said instead of “Hello.” she said is the problem you have then you obviously haven’t actually read the story since it was literally formed as “aS H i LeOV u. FuK Mii.” A common method of dialogue formatting found in shitposts, the very thing you are attempting to over analyze right now.

Tl;dr: You just commented your copy, paste garbage onto a shitpost, who’s the real loser here?

secs ago[Brenden is a character from the games]

A character with no personality who is effectively an OC, unlike the anime characters who do have established personalities. Anime fans aren’t going to complain if you have a game character cameo in an anime fic, but if you’re writing about the anime characters, it’s anime fic and I don’t want it on my dash.

[tags literally do not matter.]

might wanna check out that there “filters” feature, bud

23m agoHe’s the RSE and ORAS rival for the female PC so he actually does have a personality. And if you don’t want this on your dash there is such a thing as a back button, or you could ignore it. You could also click the x button on the top right corner and avoid http://www.fanfiction.net in general.

Since most people writing Pokemon fanfictions on http://www.fanfiction.net are writing anime fics anyways maybe you should consider moving over to archiveofourown where you can find almost exclusively game-centric fics. But we all know you won’t do that because you enjoy complaining about shitposts from http://www.fanfiction.net too much.

Once again people on this site do not give a fuck about tags on this website, if you’re going to be anal about it I’d once again like to direct you to archive. Where you can live out your pleasure of looking through the countless options of tags that will suit your style.

If you decide against any the above suggestions you can alternatively pull your head out of your ass and let people enjoy themselves. Of course that may be a little difficult for you since this is the internet and your head is stuck pretty far up there. It may take a while but I’m positive you can do it.

Have a fantastic day :)

secs ago[Since most people writing Pokemon fanfictions on http://www.fanfiction.net are writing anime fics anyways]

looooool no, buddy, no. Gee, if only there was, I dunno, some sort of TAG SYSTEM that could back this up with like, actual numbers or something… nah, that’s a crazy idea, no one would ever use that.

secs agoWell at least you admitted no one uses it.

Annnd that’s when he joins the list of fanfic writers who should learn about the site before they start writing. Just because you don’t give a fuck about them doesn’t mean everyone else doesn’t give a fuck either. Hell, I knew how to use the tags on my first story despite only discovering the site a day prior to posting it.

No excuse for being a lazy bum, man.
