The Other Pokeauthors, Part 141

In which the person whose story I harshly criticized engages reasonably and the person who shoved their story in the wrong category is enraged at my pointing this out.

In regards to the review,

While I may not agree with all of what you said, I’m still finding the advice quite helpful. I’m always a sucker on it’s versus its, and the mom thing was a typo I made. Grammar has always been a pain too.

In terms of tempo, I’m glad you noticed it was slow. :P
I made it slow intentionally, as a build up and introduction to other stuff.

The time skip thing… I can see how that’s confusing. No worries, I’ll try and work on that :P

Personally I like capitalizing the names (I dunno why), but it is true it’s not grammatically correct. I guess I’ve adopted it into my style, kinda like the sound effects thing.

Thanks for the advice though! I really need to proofread my writings more often.

I’m sorry in advance if I come across as angry. I’m not angry at you or with you, but I’m shaking really badly right now from dealing with some of the people you mentioned in your “guest” comment.

Now I will be honest with you; they warned me about you. They mentioned everything I’m seeing in this comment right now, and you know what?

That’s okay. I’ve been on this site for… what? Six years now? Probably. ―And by now I’d say I’m an old hat at organizing my work when I post it. That being said, I have my reasons for not tagging this as something that takes place in the “anime”. Because it doesn’t. It takes place in the “Video Game” world, but I didn’t feel comfortable labeling it as such when I knew there was a high chance that I would reference stuff in the anime.

Hell, with how I write, I couldn’t guarantee that there wasn’t gonna be a sequel with chapters that took place in the world of the anime. And I didn’t like labeling it one thing or the other when it clearly wasn’t. So I left it blank.

I’m sorry if that upset you, even a little (or if it didn’t then I’m sorry for assuming it did). But I left it blank for a reason, and I’m going to continue leaving it blank. Because it doesn’t fit quite right in either category, and I’m okay with that.

Get out.

secs agoGladly. Just tag your stories properly, and I won’t even see them.

Instead they blocked me, an action that takes exactly as much time. Why is this the hill so many people want to die on?

Hello, I would like to say thank you for the advice, I agree with most of it, and I just want to correct this.

[Eevee, for instance, are actually pretty bad starters – three of their evolutions require a significant purchase at a major city, two may not even be available in the region, and the other three are based on finnicky factors that are tricky for an inexperienced trainer to get right. On top of that, they have a poor movepool that makes them less than viable for the long term. Compare that to the traditional starters, which evolve at consistent benchmarks, start with useful elemental moves without needing to evolve first, and remain viable up to the end. So, there are actually interesting things you could do there – could this be a parable about pursuing flash over substance, where a kid gets a popular pokemon he thinks he wants only to find it can’t actually carry his team? But if not, if this is just going to be a standard journey where the eevee is inexplicably just as good as a regular starter… maybe consider trying out a less common pokemon, and giving him an eevee later? Even just a trainer story with a nonstandard starter, such as a rattata, can get you a lot of positive attention.]

Espeon and Umbreon can be obtained pretty easily, as it just requires the Trainer to have a strong bond with the Pokémon, allowing them to evolve just as the Trainer is pretty much not a horrible person. Sylveon can also be obtained easily, as Eevee learns Baby-Doll Eyes at level 9, which most Trainers’ Pokémon should be at around the time that they are challenging Brock. It also requires the Trainer to play with the Pokémon a bit, not too hard.

Well, that depends on how you interpret the friendship mechanic and how easy you want it to be in your universe. In the games, sure, it’s really easy… but narratively, we’re constantly told how rare it is to forge a true bond with a pokemon and how that’s a mark of the best, most elite trainers. For a story, too, it makes for a stronger character arc if forming a friendship with the pokemon is a difficult thing that the hero has to work on over the course of the whole story.

But my real point is that those factors aren’t consistent in the same way level evolutions are. The standard starters should all evolve at about the same point in the journey for everyone. An eevee evolution will depend on how good you are at bonding with your pokemon, and may also be limited by monetary investments such as stones and pokepuffs. Additionally, it’s often tricky for even experienced players to get the eeveelution they want — unless the kid is an expert on eevee, that evolution is going to be a wild card.

And again, eevee have a poor movepool. They’re a very nice accessory, but they aren’t designed to be able to carry a team, especially not to the endgame.

These factors all make eevee a poor starter. Again, you can still make an interesting story if you engage with these traits, but these are the facts from canon.

The author of the worldbuilding primer also gave be a very positive response, but it was super long so I won’t post it here. Instead, you can continue the discussion over at this new forum thread I made!

Hybrid, for the last time. Your sock puppets and those accounts your grandmother forgot the password to do not count as everyone. And for those people who aren’t fake accounts are just too blind to see their story’s flaws. And you just encourage that type of behavior that needs to be corrected.

As I’ve said before, your “proof” about that deleted account thing doesn’t directly imply that.
