Thank you for your criticism. I will try and take your advice. It is kind of hard when I’m doing this from a phone so I am bound to make mistakes.

[It is kind of hard when I’m doing this from a phone]
That sounds like a form of torture to me. Why are you doing this to yourself? Wait until you’re home and have access to a good proper keyboard. Or carry a notebook if you really can’t wait.
I do not have a working computer and I am just doing it to get better at writing, which is why I ask people such as yourself to give constructive criticism for my stories. And honestly it is not that bad typing on a phoneA response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12104373/I was thinking about changing my summary actually.
I was gonna change that in the next chapter I’m working on.
No I did not realize FFN lets you insert lines.
I’m not even that good at my own language and where can I find a dependable beta reader and how do I cooperate with him?
Thank you that you actually took you time and try to correct my writing.

Ugh, looks like FFN is stripping the links in my reviews. I’ll need to change it to (dot) format most likely.

Hello!
I just wanted to thank you very quickly for being my first review for my story Vanquish. I know my writing has a LONG way to go on the journey for improving. So, I also wanted to thank you for pointing out all the things that I completely missed. You’ve inspired me to take the time to go back and re-read and fix my errors, so for that, thank you! If you don’t mind me asking though, what were your thoughts on my story as far as the storyline is going?

First, I am really thankful for pointing out the grammar mistakes. It will help me to write better and improve my English. I didn’t know there could be such big rules in grammar so I am really thankful. No need to be sorry for that.
But as for write in your language thing…
My language is Chinese.
And I do not think anyone would review such thing on this platform. ;-;
So that is definitely not going to be a thing anytime soon.
Anyways, thank you for the review! :-)
Lots,
Prism
There are a whopping 3 Chinese Pokemon fanfics in the entire archive, so they may have a point here. Still.

Thanks for taking the time to review my fic.
I do understand the mistake on Pokemon species, but for me, it just feels wierd to not capitalize Pokemon names because they are Pokemon names. However, I’ll try thinking of it like animal names and learning to lowercase them.
The last part of the review really wasn’t nessacary. That fic wasn’t even supposed to be serious. And I PLACED THAT BIT,OF INFO IN THE BEGINNING. If you expected a strictly serious fic then you shouldn’t have read. It’s just something to entertain people who DO like my work until I get my next serious chapter fiction up. Going as far as to basically tell me that I shouldn’t post on ffn was very rude and unessacary.
Thanks and have a nice day

[Going as far as to basically tell me that I shouldn’t post on ffn was very rude and unessacary.]
What? How so? It’s only rude if you think that original fic is somehow lesser than fanfic, which I don’t.
secs ago
[Basically, you’re telling me that my fanficrion is such garbage that it shouldn.t even be classified as a fanfic.]
No, I’m telling you your story is original fiction. If you believe original fiction is garbage, then I can see how you’d interpret it that way, but, well, that’s just silly. Original fiction isn’t garbage. It just doesn’t belong on a fanfiction site.
[I don’t feel it goes as far as to have 0 to do with Pokemon and to not be a fanfiction.]
I’d like to know your reasoning for this, because I didn’t see anything that had to do with Pokemon. Which, again, is not a value statement. Just because a story is casual doesn’t change the fact that if the characters and setting have nothing to do with the canon ones, it really doesn’t make sense to call it fanfiction, and I’m honestly confused as to why you would.
4m agoI’m not going to sit and argue all evening with you about this. I can tell doing so is a complete waste of time.
All I’m going to say is please have more respect for people’s work, and don’t assume that a fic is not a fanfiction because canon isn’t always being adhered to. If you do not like a fic, then don’t disrespect the work by telling them to move it to an original work because it isn’t following canon to the letter. Either kindly critique the work or just don’t read.
Thanks and have a nice day.
The fact that something is fan fiction is precisely why it has to at least nominally adhere to canon. What makes something a derivative work is, by definition, that it draws on a known, previously-established canon. Even in wildly divergent AUs, characters retain their canon personalities in fanfic. If you don’t care about that canon at all and just want to do your own thing, again, I genuinely do not understand why you’re so invested in this. What about the Pokemon canon is so attractive to you? What can you do in it that you can’t do in an original setting?49m agoThe Royal Serperior

Just until I get enough OCs for the actual story, plus there’s the announcement piece that I have to work on
11m ago
I don’t see how that answers my question. What characters are you expecting to get from a form that strips all character from submissions? Also, you do realize you can make up your own OCs, right? That’s the better option anyway, since you understand what’s needed better than outsiders, and can balance them to minimize redundancy. If you’re relying on other peoples’ characters to carry your story, your story is going to be a train wreck with no consistency or coherence. I know this because it’s happened in every single SYOC story I’ve seen.
Well, I tried.

For starters, I appreciate the fact that you took the time to review my story.
I capitalize things as they’re capitalized in the games for the most part. If you want to complain to someone about that, go complain to NoA.
I don’t know what’s wrong with the profession of Sara’s parents. It’s not outside the realm of plausibility.
Except when it’s not a title. The words “mom” and “dad” are rarely capitalizes and words such as that are practically never capitalized if they follow a possessive.
I have a reason for that but that reason won’t become apparent until significantly late into the story. To put it succinctly, I needed someone more emotionally mature than a 10-year-old, even a precocious one like Sara.
Normally, I’d agree with you. However, Sara’s backstory plays no major part in the story going forward so I needed to get the basics out of the way. That’s why I posted Chapter 1 alongside the prologue. The details that you see in Chapter 1 are likely to be the last time you hear of it since it’s just not important to the plot.
Once again, I thank you for the review.

Yes, the games use incorrect capitalization (and other grammar mistakes). For more information, see https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread
[I don’t know what’s wrong with the profession of Sara’s parents. It’s not outside the realm of plausibility.]
No, but that setup — with the dad having an ambitious trainer-type career and the mom having a service or nurturing job — is very common, very sexist, and very annoying.
[The words “mom” and “dad” are rarely capitalizes and words such as that are practically never capitalized if they follow a possessive.]
Yes, but they didn’t follow a possessive in the instance I quoted. If you can replace something with a name (or more specifically, if you’re using it in place of a name), it’s usually capitalized.
[To put it succinctly, I needed someone more emotionally mature than a 10-year-old, even a precocious one like Sara.]
14yo’s aren’t exactly what I’d call “emotionally mature”… but regardless, you could have used an established trainer who already went on a journey. Is there a specific reason why you needed both an emotionally mature trainer and a newbie?
[Sara’s backstory plays no major part in the story going forward so I needed to get the basics out of the way.]
Then why did you include it? If something is included in a story, it should serve a purpose. If a detail isn’t important, it’s okay to cut it or gloss over it.
(Incidentally, this is a lot easier if you quote the sections you’re addressing. Having to flip back and forth between the review and this page is a bit cumbersome.)

Thanks for the OC and the feedback. To answer a few questions.
1)Thanks for the info on the review thing. Ill be sure to update that when I can,
2)Regarding the whole pokemon thing with pseudo legendaries. Trainers have to go to a they might not have a chance to go on a journey once they are 10. But ill think about this later

Thanks for your review! Yeah, it’s been a while since I’ve written anything, so my grammar is still a little bit rusty.
I’m glad you enjoyed the lighting section! I’ve been listening to a lot of fictional podcasts and the writers in those always do a great job of really setting the scene with little details like this. I really wanted to implement that in my writing, and I’m glad to see it’s working to some extent!
You can definitely count on some of your plot questions getting answered in the next couple chapters!

Thank you for reviewing my story, I will keep what you’ve said in mind and I might go though the first chapter to re edit and make it easier to understand.

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for the constructive criticism on my fanfiction. I’ve seen your reviews on some of the other stories so that’s how I knew to fix the pokemon capitalization whenever I would start writing my own; it really helps!
As for Slowpoke’s name, do you think I should edit the first chapter or save it for down the line? I realize starting off with a special name for Slowpoke would make more since because he’s family, but I just want to hear your thoughts on this.
I’ll try to get the plot going up in the second chapter, though it may not be executed perfectly.
I’ll put the way I describe the narrator in a different spot so it doesn’t look so awkward, and I’ll swap that empty space out for text that will hopefully flow well together.
Lastly, I’ll edit the chapter and fix the overuse of epithets. I hope to see you around again, because I know there’ll be some things that’ll need help.
What do you mean by “save it for down the line”? Like, have Will name him later? I don’t think that would make too much sense, since he should have named him earlier. I’d recommend just editing it in; a small thing like that this early is fine.A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12107838/

The dropdown menu has the number of the chapter next to the name of the chapter, so I think it should be okay. At least, that is what I see while on a computer. I am no so sure when it comes to phones and/or tablets.
I think what I meant to do there was say: He waved his hand and told me, “Take the day off.”
I must have missed that in the editing process. Thanks for pointing it out.
I capitalize the names of pokemon simply because most people call any pokemon they see by their species’ name until they find out if they have a special name of their own. I agree that your logic is sound on all accounts, but mainly for the real world. In the subbed anime, the few that I have watched, they have capitalized the name of the pokemon both before and after learning the actual name. Because of this, I think the pokemon universe goes by different rules when it comes to stuff like this. I will, more than likely, stop capitalizing pokemon in the future because you do make a good point when it comes to that.
I simply have not brought in many pokemon yet. It is a sort of flaw of mine when, in my efforts to make the plot as believable and logical as possible, I tend to make things more closely resembling reality towards the beginning. The next chapter should have more pokemon and begin to diverge from resembling the real world so much.
To conclude, I thank you for your review. You made some good points and I do enjoy it when others point out my mistakes and offer possible solutions. I hope you have a pleasant day.
You have two comments in white and then a bunch with the first paragraphs being white.
In the response to zelenal, a bit on edge if I agree with your view on how authors should write regarding traditional gender roles. If anything, the jobs of the parents in a story should given to best build the character up. The goal is to build a world.
Mostly looking for some discussion on the subject. Neither of you really made a big deal about it and I wouldn’t either, but I am interested in your views on the matter.
The issue is every single story with both parents has either the dad as the trainer and the mom not OR they’re both trainers and the dad beat the mom and then she married him.
Literally every. single. story.
Well, I haven’t been reading too many Pokémon fanfic lately. I could definitely see how it would get kind of grating to see the exact same background for parents every time. At least in this one it was spiced up a bit with the father being a researcher, which in the Pokémon world has grown more fairly balanced genderwise.
Kinda surprising though. Is it really all that common to see stories where both parents are trainers with the gal marrying the guy because she got beat? I don’t see a problem with the couple just having different interests, but that story line being common sets off a few bells.
Is it really all that common to see stories where both parents are trainers with the gal marrying the guy because she got beat?
Oh no, those are the rare progressive ones. Most just go straight for “never a trainer”. Sometimes the mom’s profession and life in general go unmentioned while Dad was a great trainer. Sometimes she was a huge success…at being Kalos Queen or whatever, because trainer-jock dad deserves the pokemon equivalent of head cheerleader. And so on.
I don’t see a problem with the couple just having different interests
That’s not the problem at all. It’s that they always divide the interests the same way. The mom is some girly occupation – contest trainer, teacher, stay at home mom. The dad is some manly occupation – trainer/gym leader, businessman, unknown but not there cooking breakfast. When they get the same interests, the dad is always objectively better at whatever it is – Mom was a trainer but Dad’s a gym leader, Mom’s a gym leader and Dad’s region champion.
