However, I have to point an error on your part in the critique.You stated, “you wouldn’t capitalize animal or mouse or dragon, so you shouldn’t capitalize words like pokemon or pikachu or charizard. The only time you should capitalize it is if you’re using it as the pokemon’s name, ie, Ash’s pikachu is called Pikachu.” Under normal circumstances, you would be right. However, this is not the case regarding Pokemon names. The best explanation I can give as to why this is, is because Game Freak has set their own rules regarding Pokemon names (they have the license to do so); and those rules are as follows:
1) You ALWAYS capitalized the names of Pokemon, regardless of whether or not it is a proper noun. The word “Pokemon” itself is included in this rule. [Ex: “Pikachu” is always written as “Pikachu”, never as “pikachu”]
Note: Whenever writing out a verbal Pokedex entry, such as when a character’s Pokedex speaks up in the anime, you would write out its classification in lowercase.
[Ex: “Pikachu, the mouse Pokemon…”]
2) Whether a Pokemon is addressed as singular or as plural, the name is always written in singular form.
[Ex: “A plan was recently announced to gather many Pikachu and make an electric power plant.” (Pokemon Sun Pokedex entry)]
Note: The only occasion you would say “Pikachus” is when it is in the possessive form, “Pikachu’s”. However, when doing the plural-possessive form (ex. ” girls’ ” instead of “girl’s”), you still to write it in the singular-possessive form.
