“The way you review really irks me. You’re too critical and it gets on my nerves. I know you’re trying to help, but the way you go about it is not helping. The word “Pokemon” is Trademarked by the way. So it can be capitalized.”
Also, someone from a while back calms down and unblocks me.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12487863/ Alright, thanks for letting me know, I’ll go ahead and do that. Also thanks for the tip that needed as I didn’t know and I will keep it in mind.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12484051/ Thanks a lot for all of your info. it means a lot that you would take the time t tell me what was wrong with the story and how to fix it instead of just saying “This sux lol” and leaving. I’m going t get on rewriting the first chapter right now and hope that you continue with the story and continue giving helpful criticism.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12483470/ Wowzers! Real, honest to goodness constructive criticism? You shouldn’t have. :D
Nah, I do appreciate that you took the time to go all out with your thoughts. I agree with a lot you said, though. I was trying for something more atmospheric and slow, so that might be why it feels like it took forever to end, haha. (thanks for the tip regarding ellipses, it was especially helpful) And I also agree that N sounds crazy and Whitney doesn’t have much characterization. This is my first time writing something closer to canon-style, but I personally don’t see that as an excuse for the lack of development; I just wasn’t sure how to approach this scene, and I suppose it shows. ._. But I’ll definitely take what you said into account and do my best to improve!
Again, thank you so much!
Don’t take this as me raging or anything, but I would like to respond to some of the criticisms on my fanfic “pokemon nations at war”. 1. “you’re telling me luxray (predator) and pikachu (prey) get along? Really?” I do see why you would say this, as that does make no sense but the topic of predators and prey in the same kingdom has yet to be touched upon and thus it is not yet known what would happen in these situations but it could be inferred that predators would still go after prey.2. “Only humans die in childbirth. Egg-laying species can become egg-bound, but that would look very different than this. Your characters are indistinguishable from humans.” At no point was it said she dies from childbirth. It refers to her as “ill” and not that she is, in fact, ill from childbirth. Things do still die of illness’ after egg laying that isn’t related to egg laying or childbirth in the case of humans. The inability to read what was directly in front of you in this example makes most of your other criticism seem null and void.

[it is not yet known what would happen in these situations but it could be inferred that predators would still go after prey.]
Then why would the prey have any loyalty to their kingdom? Why is their loyalty divided along type lines and not along the lines of “people who kill me” versus “people who don’t”?
[At no point was it said she dies from childbirth. It refers to her as “ill” and not that she is, in fact, ill from childbirth. ]
Right, you just structured it exactly like an extremely common and specific cliche, can’t see how there would be any confusion there. If the illness is unrelated to the extreme, specific stress that commonly makes people ill she is currently exhibiting, you need to make that clearer. If readers are unclear about what’s going on, that’s a valid criticism.
And perhaps I would have been able to figure it out if it didn’t look like you wrote everyone as humans and did a find-and-replace for pokemon names. Your fic belongs on Fictionpress or Archive of Our Own as original fiction.
Yeah… I actually kinda wanted to apologize for blocking you last year. I was completely new to the whole writing thing, and even though your first review on The Journey of Aura probably didn’t really affect me, I guess my mind was just not quite prepared yet for the critisism. I still don’t know for sure if you were actually trying to just hate on my story or not, but I did notice you review on the story one of my followers wrote (don’t ask why I saw it, I was just looking around with nothing better to do), and after I cheked your profile, I actually read what was on there. Anyways, I do still wonder whether you were actually trying to help my writing or not, cause I don’t recall anything but what my mind saw as “rude” criticism back then.
Of course. If I was just trying to tear you down, I wouldn’t have told you how to fix all the things I pointed out.
Wolf StrifeThe way you review really irks me. You’re too critical and it gets on my nerves. I know you’re trying to help, but the way you go about it is not helping. The word “Pokemon” is Trademarked by the way. So it can be capitalized. It shows respect for the show and the creatures that are Pokemon. If you are going to review, say something along the lines of “I can help you critique your work if you want my advice or beta read for you if you want me to?” or something along those lines. It’s as simple as that. There is no need for a critical analysis like the ones you give. Don’t be pressuring like you are. Sincerely,
Wolf Strife

[The word “Pokemon” is Trademarked]
Is the word “trademarked” also trademarked?
Your argument was debunked years ago. Go to https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread instead of wasting my time.
[You’re too critical and it gets on my nerves.]
So you want me to stop a successful venture that multiple people find very helpful because you, personally, don’t like it? Sorry, but I’m going to keep doing what works instead of satisfying the whims of some random person.
If you can tell me, specifically, what I can do different to improve my reviews, I’m all ears. If you can’t, you’re wasting everyone’s time. Why don’t you try reviewing a bit yourself so you can show me how it’s done.
I’m not telling you to specifically how to write your reviews, but to shorten them where it’s not sounding obnoxious.secs ago
Then you are telling me how to write my reviews.”Obnoxious” is a subjective term and therefore useless to me; obviously, I don’t believe my reviews are obnoxious. You will need to pinpoint exactly what the problem is. Tell me, specifically, how I can change the reviews to meet your standards.
Unsurprisingly, that was a conversation killer.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12504852/ I went and fixed the worlds thing.and as far as my understanding goes, a drabble is less than 200 words. I have never heard it otherwise, but thank you so much for correcting me!
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12503936/ “? Is this a superhero story now? What is the purpose of this “hero gear”? Does it have some practical purpose, like body armor? Is it just a uniform so people know they’re part of the association?:
illiteracy
Well, yes, its a superhero story. Its even in the description of the story that it follows young heroes. So, in response to what you said about the monsters and setting, I think you’re asking way too much out of a prologue. I want to have mystery in this story. I want to give people a reason to come back. “Okay, where are the monsters coming from?” “Why are they here?” “How do Pokemon mix in with all of this?” These are the reasons. I don’t want to just give everything away right now, especially in a prologue. I only wrote this to introduce the current heroes. I felt as if I put the prologue in with the first chapter, then I’d be introducing way too many characters for what I have planned. So I decided to split it up.As for the OC submission instructions, I don’t want to give away what they’ll be used for or their purpose, nor do I really even want to give away why they appear later. Again, this ties into the fact that I don’t want to just outright state or say things I’ve had people make plenty of good OCs with even less information and even more restrictions. I don’t typically make restrictions like this, but for what I have planned, I need characters like that, and I need them to appear later in the story. So its really kind of a “submit at your own risk” sort of deal.

[I want to have mystery in this story. I want to give people a reason to come back.]
I can understand this reasoning, but I still feel like you’re going too far. Right now, I’m not really sure I want to come back, because it feels more like I missed the first third of the story than that this will all be explained in an orderly fashion. It is good to hook readers, but it is possible to overdo in medias res and just make your readers feel lost. Instead of jumping straight into a battle scene with unknown stakes starring members of an organization we know nothing about, I think a slower opening that gives the readers more time to breathe and understand the world would work better. From what you’re saying it sounds like these are side characters and your first chapter will involve the real main character, presumably in a slower situation? It might have been better to lead with that.
[As for the OC submission instructions, I don’t want to give away what they’ll be used for or their purpose, nor do I really even want to give away why they appear later.]
Then I don’t understand why you’re fielding OCs at all. If people don’t know what they’re submitting for or even how these mechanics work, they’re shooting in the dark. You may get suitable submissions by pure luck, but the story will work better if you design the characters yourself, given you know what you want them for but the submitters don’t. It’s really hard to insert a good character into a story if we don’t know what role they’ll be in; not every character is suitable for all roles.
7h agoWell, yeah, I can understand your point there, and I do agree with you. I just sort of wanted to set a scene and tone for the story, and show the direction it would go in. And these characters that have been introduced aren’t exactly side characters. Although we do get introduced to a different character that’s focused on a little more in the actual first chapter, I didn’t want to just shove over five characters in someone’s face like that. You’ll learn all about the organization and the monsters in the first chapter when it actually begins. Could it have been a bad idea to start off with a prologue? I’m not opposed to thinking that, and I can accept when I’ve screwed up. In this case, I sort of have, but I’d at least like to think there’s some redeeming quality to all of this, and that’s the fact that I’ve gotten five characters and the situation of the story introduced. The mosters, what the organization is about will be covered in the first chapter. But I do see the appeal of having covered that in the prologue as well, but then we get back to my personal take on it, which is I’m showing too much of the story in one go.
For the OCs, you have a point. It is pretty much a crapshoot, and it could quite possibly deter a lot of people from submitting. Which I don’t necessarily mind in this case, since I don’t need too many of them. While I know what I need, I’m not necessarily the best at creating. If I have a solid template of something to run with, then I can do that. But I’m just really not that great with coming up with a ton of characters for a story. At least not by myself, anyway. I agree, not every character is suitable for all roles, but I’ve yet to get a character that’s pretty unsuitable for what I’m going to do. Like I said, I really don’t ever have this many restrictions with an SYOC, but this situation is different.
You have very valid criticisms, and I’ve never been one to shy away from criticism when it’s valid. But the way you picked apart the first chapter of my other story, Be Somebody, and seemingly haven’t come back to it makes me think you only picked it apart just to pick it apart. Now, I can understand completely if as the story progressed with chapters 2 and 3, you lost interest. That’s fine. But you were somewhat critical of the entire basis and structure of the story, and then just sort… left and never exactly reviewed again, not even to say “Hey, I’m glad you took my advice on something” or “Hey, this still needs work” or even a simple “Yeah, no, sorry, I’m not interested in this story anymore for this and that reason.” Though, that’s mostly just a courtesy thing in my opinion, and you don’t have to do it.
You reminded me a bit of Farla, how when she essentially picks apart the first chapter of a lot of stories and uses copy and paste paragraphs, telling everyone the same exact thing with no personalization. I’m not saying in any way that you’re like Farla, as you strike me as someone who only wants to see people improve. But to me personally, at times it just feels like you’re picking them apart JUST to pick them apart. You haven’t exactly given me areas I need to improve on, just pointed out flaws. Now, I can understand why you haven’t done that, as its only the first chapter of a story and thus a little hard to identify a running problem someone has, or let’s say someone’s inability to properly structure a plot or write a character. But even so, I’m someone who does better with criticism when someone flat-out tells me what I’m good at and what I need to improve on.
I once looked at one of Farla’s stories after she tore apart a chapter of one of mine. I can’t remember which one, but it was a long time ago, and I went to go review a chapter. Once I reviewed, I decided to look at other people’s opinions to see what they were saying. I can’t say I was surprised to see people copying and pasting her reviews and just spamming her stories with them. It even got to the point where she put a link on her profile where you could ban her from reviewing any of your stories, and that just struck me as a little messed up. Then, I went to one of your stories after you reviewed mine, but I didn’t read it. I went to the reviews, and people were calling you all sorts of names and just spamming it with hate. Whether or not the hate was deserved, if it wasn’t, if you were just trying to help, or if you were genuinely being overly-criticial or just a jerk is not my place to say.
What I’m saying is, I feel as if you should work on your delivery. Like I said earlier, you have very valid criticsms of my story, and I’m not saying your criticism is unwanted, and nor am I saying you’re going too far. But you haven’t told me what I can improve on, or what areas I’m doing good in. All you’ve done is picked apart my chapter and kind of made me feel like there isn’t anything good to it. I think when a review is all criticism and the reviewer doesn’t even bother to say “Hey, you’ve got a decent thing going on here,” or “I think this has potential” or even just flat out say “Listen, I don’t think this is a coherent idea and I think you should take some time to really analyze and think critically about what you want this story to be” can just deter someone from wanting to respond to you. While I do appreciate the fact that you respond and hold a discussion with someone, unlike Farla, I just felt like you came across as just a little too critical. Everyone is different and everyone responds to feedback differently, and I’m sure you know that. I’ve read your profile, and I know you aren’t trying to be critical, but to me personally, you came of as being a little critical. I know how someone can interpret your review is entirely out of your power, but I’ve just been taught to do the “Review sandwich” and when I review or critique a story, I find that it’s worked better for me personally, rather than just have it be all criticism. I like to hear what I need improvement on, but I also like to hear the areas I’m good, or at least decent in. But that’s just me, I suppose. Some people could work really well with the criticisms you give them, and improve exponentially, while others might struggle and need something more outright that can sum up what they’re having trouble with and need to improve on.
Tl;dr: I appreciate your reviews and criticism, but I just felt you were a little critical, and never painted me a solid picture of what I could improve on, and what I was doing at least halfway decent in. I’d rather not see you amass the amount of hatred Farla has, but that’s up to you and the way you conduct yourself.

[I’m not saying in any way that you’re like Farla, as you strike me as someone who only wants to see people improve.]
So does Farla.
[I’d rather not see you amass the amount of hatred Farla has]
Eh, that’s kind of being a concern troll, quite frankly. I don’t care about the hatred. Can’t please everyone. What you don’t see is that even more people appreciate my reviews and take what I say to heart, which is a success in my book.
I do discuss what I think can be improved when I can think of something to say. The problem is, that’s just not always possible. A lot of Pokemon fanfic really is just rote, plotless stuff that never goes anywhere, and the most I can do with that is check for grammar and point out that hey, maybe think about what you’re doing a little more.
Other times, the reasons I don’t like the story are subjective and there’s nothing I can really say beyond “Sorry, just not my thing.” I do remember “Be Somebody”, and I didn’t have interest in it because it felt like over-the-top grimdark for the sake of grimdark, and that’s a huge turnoff to me. It didn’t look like the world, characters, or plot made a lot of sense, and I once again got the feeling that I missed the first act of the story. This looks a bit more focused, but it still looks like it probably won’t be my thing. I’m here for the pokemon, you know? There are a zillion stories about superheroes fighting monsters already.
[what about that method creates a situation where the person you’re critiquing thinks that the praise isn’t true? You then went on to say that if you said you liked something, then that meant you really did. So why or how can the praise sandwich create a situation where someone thinks you’re lying?]
If reviewers are required to put praise in every review, then if they don’t have any genuine praise to say, that requires them to lie, does it not? Authors aren’t stupid. They know when people are reaching or lying to them. However, knowing whether the praise is truth or a lie? That’s harder. If you set up a culture where people have to churn out meaningless praise all the time instead of only when they mean it, praise becomes devalued, because no one can be sure what’s real and what isn’t. This creates an atmosphere of fear and paranoia where people will accuse others of faking praise just to look better or soften the blow (which has actually happened to me).
Treat authors with respect, not like dumb toddlers made of glass. Don’t entangle them in a web of lies.
Anyway, if you want OCs, here’s a whole bunch of them: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/128021680/1/Character-Bio-Thread

34m agoWell, with the way Farla conducts herself, it can be a little hard to believe she genuinely wants to see people improve and become better. For me, that kind of gets lost among the things she does like copy and paste paragraphs into reviews. I mean, I can on one hand understand why she does that because a lot of people do things that she doesn’t necessarily agree with, or are objectively wrong, but to a lot of people it just seems to come off as rude, lazy, or just kind of mean.
It kind of sucks that you think I’m being a concern troll when I say I don’t want to see your stories get spammed by idiots taking out their frustration on you.
There isn’t too much more I can say about your next two points about a story not being your thing and about how giving people specific things to improve upon because for the most part, I agree with you.
I’m by no means saying people required to put praise in every review. I’m just saying in a community where a lot of people know about Farla and hate her, perhaps a little praise every once in a while can sometimes go a long way. Show people that they’re doing stuff that’s good too, because maybe they don’t know. Like me, for instance. While I’ve been around on the site for a long time, I’m still a pretty inexperienced writer. Sure, it’s great to know what my weaknesses are, but I’d like to know my strengths as well. That and at the end of the day, writing is more of a hobby for me than anything else. It helps me feel better, and it isn’t something I’m necessarily too serious about (if I were, I probably wouldn’t be doing SYOC stories to be completely honest). The fact that I can write is great, but of course I do want to get better.
I think I got a little off track at the end there. But I agree, putting praise in every review you write can create a situation where you’re unsure if the praise is genuine. As you can probably tell, I don’t exactly have a good rebuttal to most of your arguments here. That’s because when it all comes down to it, you’re right. I’m just saying maybe this critical approach you have could been done better is all. I guess I was just mostly disappointed by the fact that I didn’t get a clear layout of what’s good and what needs work with me, because you seem like a pretty knowledgeable person and you know what you’re talking about, and it could have really helped me out. But like we’ve both said, that’s not always possible. That and it’s interesting to see your take on things as a critical reviewer who actually responds, unlike Farla.

“Treat authors with respect, not like dumb toddlers made of glass. Don’t entangle them in a web of lies.”
True thing. I just realized that you actually are treating them with respect. Most people, even when they just write as a hobby, want their work to be taken seriously and that’s exactly what you do.
