“I named him Charmander because that’s what happens when pokemon hatch and you don’t name them that was my point this takes place in the future where trainers are hard to come by so that’s why Charmander wasn’t named.”
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/11679068/ Thank you for reviewing the story. However, I find your reviews so annoying. I don’t see your work on the site often and yet, you have the audacity to comment on everyone else’s story with such blunt comments. I don’t mind you commenting on my work, just provide a positive comment for every negative thing you have to say. Thanks.
[I don’t mind you commenting on my work, just provide a positive comment for every negative thing you have to say.]
And if there is nothing positive for me to comment on?

So I should ignore the people who don’t do anything right at all, and who therefore need the most help? That seems backwards to me.
This website is not a safe space. This is a website with a public commenting feature where you can be exposed to potentially anything by potentially anyone. If you don’t enjoy such a volatile environment, it is on you to curate your own self-care, perhaps by moving to a website where you have more control over comments. If you feel that I alone am the problem, you can block me and you’ll never have to hear from me again; but you cannot tell me that I cannot use a feature of this website for its intended purpose.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12534479/ As I’ve said before to a different author, Pokémon names should ALWAYS be capitalized
secs ago
[As an example, Gyarados could refer to the species as a whole and also to Misty’s Gyarados]
Thank you for demonstrating exactly why this is a problem.
If you had actually read what I said, you would know that the place for discussing this is here: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread
Why?

https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread
Brand names are capitalized as any other name. In our world, there’s a person who made up a bunch of letters for imaginary magic animals and then trademarked them so other people can’t use it. That gets capitalized. In their world, pokemon are real and no one owns a copyright on any of it, while any imaginary brand names you make up do get capitalized despite not being actual brand names with actual real world legal protections. Also, Bulbapedia currently capitalizes all uses of “professor”, so they’re just generally wrong here.
For another example of this, the first line of the book The Hobbit, which contains a Hobbit ™ owned by Tolkien estate with dire legal consequences on else anyone using, is In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.
When it is used as part of a name, yes. Not when it is used as a standalone object.
No. In that case it would be capitalized; titles are usually capitalized when they are used in place of a name (because then they are standing in for proper nouns). I mean when they are used as common nouns, such as “Barack Obama used to be a law professor” or “Kukui is a pokemon professor”. Notice how that sentence differs from the one on the Bulbapedia page for Kukui.A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12533923/ You know, for a drabble without that much thought put into, you’re really analyzing this. Seriously, I wrote this for fun, not because I was trying to adhere to the many and confusing rules of the Pokémon universe. Analyzing the rules of the anime versus the games would be headache inducing.I usually put in lines, for once I just forgot.People really argue about that stuff? Seriously? You know, I understand I’m not the best when it comes to spelling and grammar, but this is kind of ridiculous considering I’ve seen other people write the same way. That’s what you got on my case for?
I’ll repeat what I said, you’re taking a one shot I wrote for fun very seriously. I could understand if this was one of my bigger stories that’s still ongoing because there I completely understand why someone would be critiquing it. But for this…..I’m sorry to say your review left a bad taste in my mouth. Not that I think it was a flame, but it still came across as kind of condescending.
Still, I do thank you for reviewing.

For future reference, this is a lot easier if you quote the sections you’re referring to.
You’re taking the analysis awfully personally for something you just “wrote for fun”. Overanalyzing stories and trends in the fandom is what I do for fun. I understand if you don’t want to do the same, but I think it is pretty self-evident that you are under no obligation to engage with a stranger on the internet if you don’t want to. If you’re not interested in my opinions, ignore them.
7m agoI messaged you because I always try to thank those who review me as well as address any concerns, questions, or misunderstandings. I would have messaged you even if it had been a one sentence review.
Though I would suggest if you critique something like this again, maybe you should also say what you liked as well as your problems with the story. That way you’re a lot less likely to get someone mad.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12535520/ Thank you kindly for your review! To be honest, I haven’t really read a whole lot of pokémon fic, so it stands to reason I’d end up on something overdone. I just read BT and loved it and wanted to do something similar. That said, I would like my story to stand out if it can, so I will gladly take your advice into account. Thanks again!
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12533752/ First of all, thanks for leaving a review of my story in the first place. I appreciate anyone who cares enough to spend time writing something as long as what you did. That being said, a lot of what you say really doesn’t hold up when I tried to look at this as a serious objective critique. The capitalization “problem”? It was my choice to do it that way. The same thing with the Arceus being referred to the same as we would God subject. Aesthetically it makes sense to me.There is no explicit rules for Pokémon fanfiction writing and the only reference you provide when it comes to the “rules” are http://www.fanfiction.net forum topics started by what appear to be condescending authors who feel like there is only one correct way to write for the Pokémon universe (especially the person on the capitalization issue, damn. That person needs a chill pill). Now, you might not personally like the way that capitalization is done or the way Arceus is referred, but that is not a point of objective critique, rather it’s something that I wrote that you personally don’t jive with. That’s fine, I just don’t feel any need to change it.
[…So he can talk to pokemon and therefore knows without a shadow of doubt that they have human-level intelligence, but he’s still making them call him “master” and stuffing them in balls. Well, my sympathy for your protagonist just evaporated. I don’t care about how hard life is for a slaveowner.]
implying that people in the Pokémon universe don’t know that Pokémon exhibit higher intelligence
implying he makes her call him master
implying that being inside a Pokéball is tantamount to being a cage or something
Hilarious.
Given this reaction and the other points you had above, something tells me you take this whole Pokémon thing a leeettle too seriously. I’m just in the business of telling fun stories that subvert an element typically reserved for fetishy material.
You did however bring up a good point with the summary: I should have put a notice in it about the themes of the story because it could be a deal breaker for some people. In fact, most of the stuff you said about the summary are pretty good points, but it did have you asking questions which is actually encouraging to me. If the description had too much information, you wouldn’t be asking any questions at all. But yeah, I did copy it from another website where descriptions aren’t limited.
I really do like that you cared to leave a review even though I didn’t get much from some of your points, my friend. The description of the story has been updated, so that’s one that’s better at least.

[I tried to look at this as a serious objective critique]
You do understand critiques are by their nature subjective? I’m expressing my opinion on your story. You can disagree with that opinion, but don’t be surprised that it is one.
[The same thing with the Arceus being referred to the same as we would God subject. Aesthetically it makes sense to me.]
This is the first time I’ve heard that and I’m very interested to know more. If you can give me a good reason why it makes more sense, I will change my position.
[implying that people in the Pokémon universe don’t know that Pokémon exhibit higher intelligence
implying he makes her call him master
implying that being inside a Pokéball is tantamount to being a cage or something]
I fail to see how that addresses my arguments at all.
If people know that pokemon exhibit higher intelligence and still treat them like animals, that is even more awful, because they don’t even have the excuse of ignorance. Why is it okay to knowingly treat people like pets? We have a word for that, it’s called slavery.
It doesn’t matter if he makes her call him “master” or if she’s been Stockholmed into it. He allows it. Why does he encourage such an unequal dynamic between someone he considers a friend? Why does she behave this way in the first place?
She expresses confusion when she’s let out, so she is unaware of her surroundings inside the pokeball which means yes, it is tantamount to a cage. If you didn’t intend to portray pokeballs that way, you need to make that clearer.
There are ways to make the canon setup not slavery. This is not one of them. I, too, am in the business of making and reading fun stories. I just don’t find casual slavery to be very fun.
[It was my choice to do it that way.]
Then your choice is wrong. The God/Arceus thing is a point of subjective preference, but this is not. Pokemon are not proper nouns and should not be capitalized by English capitalization rules.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12534947/ Thanks for nitpicking my story instead of actually reviewing it. I really needed that. Like everyone cares about the how the author note is written and a typo in the summary. I really do want advice to improve my grammar but that is not my only problem. I also didn’t know that this website did not allow links to other websites, so do you really need to point that out in your “review?”
[I also didn’t know that this website did not allow links to other websites, so do you really need to point that out in your “review?”]
…Yes? If you don’t know something, shouldn’t people inform you?
secs ago
I can’t assume that, given the story publicly aired without you figuring it out.
I genuinely do not understand why you’re taking this so personally. If my information is useful, then you can use it; if it proves unnecessary, then you can just ignore my review. You can only benefit from this.
secs ago
[All I see you is saying how awful my grammar is.]
No. I told you how to fix it, and where you could go for further assistance. You said yourself that your grammar is horrible, so why are you upset that I’m telling you how to fix something you know is a problem?
[You could have just recommended to me the beta reader and not say that I NEED it. It just really makes me tick that you only complaining about my grammar and you say you’re having a hard time figuring out what’s going on and you’re not telling me how I can make it more clear what’s happening]
The fact that I couldn’t understand what was happening is why you need a beta reader. I didn’t tell you how to fix it because that is the job of a beta reader; you would need to rework the entire chapter. Fixing the grammar mistakes could have helped a lot and allowed me to pinpoint more specific problems, but the grammar errors were endemic. You have to learn how to fix those first.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12533580/ Thanks a million!
I’ll keep those things in mind, when I write it, next time! Thanks a lot for the information! And for correcting my mistakes! ; ) Wait.. a thought is not supposed to be quoted? Should it be like this, ‘What is he saying?’ or just in italics without any quotation marks? Also, what should be the correct form of the sentences in this, “Besides,” she said. “you do the same with May, don’t you?”
Should a comma be added after said?
(“Hey,” she grinned) is not correct, right? Since, it is an action…it should be full stop before the quotation mark?
And what about this (“He is so stupid,” she giggled.) Is it correct?
Sorry, but I’m just confused on this part. Sorry!
[Wait.. a thought is not supposed to be quoted? Should it be like this, ‘What is he saying?’ or just in italics without any quotation marks?]
Just italics, or no notation at all, is standard.
[Also, what should be the correct form of the sentences in this, “Besides,” she said. “you do the same with May, don’t you?”]
It should be [“Besides,” she said, “you do the same with May, don’t you?”]
My paragraph can be dense and hard to follow; a better explanation can be found here: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/21887406/1/Writing-Guide-Part-One-Grammar
Grey Gear CoperationA response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12535164/ I will have a check it. This story is original fiction? I didn’t intend it to become one or I’m missing something here. It was surprising.
It is effectively original fiction i.e. if you changed the Pokemon-related names to something else, you could publish it without legal consequences. Heck, you’ve already changed the names of everyone except Arceus.
CoolCordovaProductionsA response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12533442/ Hello, thank you for the review and I will take your advice to make my chapters longer and better. I occasionally struggle with writing summaries, but I will change that soon. In the future I will use better grammer and sentence structure. I named him Charmander because that’s what happens when pokemon hatch and you don’t name them that was my point this takes place in the future where trainers are hard to come by so that’s why Charmander wasn’t named.I am going to rewrite the first chapter to be better before the second one is posted.
[I named him Charmander because that’s what happens when pokemon hatch and you don’t name them that was my point this takes place in the future where trainers are hard to come by so that’s why Charmander wasn’t named.]
Why can’t social creatures come up with their own names?
Okay I think I get where your coming from next time I’ll name him something like Charmander with a group of numbers and letters. I am really appreciative of how polite you were and how you gave me advice. Please know I appreciate you reading this and taking the time to write all of that advice. I genuinly appreciate you.
I’m just in the business of telling fun stories that subvert an element typically reserved for fetishy material.
And the award for “weirdest reason to get into writing fanfiction” goes to…
You do understand that critiques are by their nature subjective?
Proooooobably not the best thing you want to say in a fandom that has such issues with capitalizing things (even though, as a prescriptivist language, grammar is still technically just a bunch of consensus rules, but that’s besides the point)…
Aesthetically it makes sense to me.
Aesthetically, it still sounds ridiculous. If you don’t want to include the implication that there is a judeo-christian god in your setting, don’t use exclamations that presuppose the existence of one like “Oh my God!”
It’s not hard to work them out of your dialogue. Just have them say “Oh, my!” if you really have to use it. That’s what the actual anime does.
