The Other Pokeauthors, Part 54

Some capitalization whining, but otherwise very calm.

Hilarious! I was reading random stories and came across one of your reviews none too long before you’d given one to me. How unexpected, haha.

I do appreciate the input, though! I’m actually pleased because you, well.. I think, unintentionally, saw the actual point in why I wrote it to begin with. Because they’re npc’s, they lack real meaning, real character, real depth, story. You only see a little of them, make of them what you will and resume the journey, as the star player.

It was a perspective from an NPC that will be met and then forgotten about. I think I’ll change the writing around to make it fit that narrative better so it won’t be as confusing.

Hi there! Thank you for reviewing my fic! I recognized your username from reviews of some other fics I read, so it feels kind of surreal seeing you here. I made that wishy-washy excerpt my summary because I wanted to keep it consistent with the one on AO3, and truthfully, I just didn’t feel like changing it. I understand the value of a more precise description, but here I decided to be vague.

I’m glad you enjoyed it! I was surprised with how much my style changed for Guzma this oneshot; I’ve been writing Gladion for another of my fics and my style’s much more clinical there. I really love Guzma and Plumeria, and I want them to have happy endings. Fingers crossed for more of them in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon!

As for your last point, I totally get what you mean! I usually prefer it as well that species names are left uncapitalized, like in Mass Effect how turian and krogan are uncapitalized like human. I understand all those points and 99% of the time I align with them too, but Pokemon’s the exception for me. I enjoy how it looks capitalized because that’s what most people are used to. Gotta lean on artistic license for that one!

Thank you again for taking the time to review!

Thanks for your support!

Thank you so much for taking the time to review! You are absolutely right about formatting and other things, and make a strong argument about using Arceus in place of God [yes I checked out the link]. I also checked out the capitalization link, and agree that I should adhere completely to those rules. I may or may not be rewriting this story to add more, because as I’m rereading it, I’m realizing that you’re right: it is, in fact, disjointed. I really appreciate the time you took to read and review, and I’ll work on bettering my skills! Thanks for the critique!

Thank you, this is a predecessor to my next story, which should come out soon hopefully.
I’ve corrected my mistakes that you pointed out, as for Lance moving from Kanto to Johto, in my universe they don’t share a league.

Hoi. Just looking through the reviews and I found your ‘proper noun’ section.
Technically, you WOULD call a species by its name, i.e. Charizard, Pikachu, and Pidgey, even if they are ‘wild’ and thus ‘have not been named’.
Just thought I would comment on this―I’m not trying to be rude, though, if that’s the impression you’re getting.

secs agoI have no clue what you’re trying to say. I think this would be easier if you posted your argument to this thread: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread
27m agoI’m just saying that, since it’s a SPECIES NAME, it is considered a pronoun, and should always be capitalized, regardless of origin/status.

secs agohttps://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread

Really? You’ve a Human? Oh wait no species names aren’t capitalized, family and genus are and even then only when it’s part of the official scientific name, which is why we also don’t capitalize ape or monkey or canine.

To quote Wikipedia, “Deer (singular and plural) are the ruminant mammals forming the family Cervidae. Species in the family include white-tailed deer, mule deer such as black-tailed deer, elk, moose, red deer, reindeer (caribou), fallow deer, roe deer, pudú and chital. Male deer of all species (except the Chinese water deer) and female reindeer grow and shed new antlers each year. In this they differ from permanently horned animals such as antelope, which are in the same order as deer and may bear a superficial resemblance.”

Note which words are capitalized and which aren’t.

Should you click on white-tailed deer, it says, “The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus),” the same format as always. That’s also why we’re H. sapiens – Homo is the genus, sapiens the species. And note this capitalization applies only to the official Latin name, as it is rightly capitalized Hominidae but we do not say Hominids to refer to members of the family. That’s why deer can be a term for multiple species, but it’s not capitalized until you refer to them as Cervidae.

33m agoYeah. I was talking about the genus and the species. My bad.
*Rubs back of head in embarrassment*
I’ve only finished, like, half of eighth-grade science, so I apologize again if I made you… how do I put this… “Huff and puff and blow the house down.”
secs agoWe could have avoided this if you had just read the first post of the thread, like I said in the review.
secs agoGood point.
Regardless, enjoy the rest of your day.
