Otherwise, we appear to be connecting to the bizarroverse. People are very polite.
Thank you for letting me know about the songfic thing. I was not previously aware.
ZeraX7A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12551665/ Thank you so much for the feedback, and yes I’m not a native English speaker as English is my second language.
I will put your notes in mind for next time.Regarding some of your notes: [Pallet Town is known for being the starting point for many Pokémon trainers since it houses Oak’s lab.]
[Professor Oak give its starter Pokémon Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle each year to new trainers]
Nope. Professors are not the sole arbitrators of trainership. If you’ve read the manga, you really have no excuse for saying this.
I didn’t claim for every single trainer there is, I just said “many”. And I wasn’t using a specific canon as a basis for this. The games, anime and the manga each has their own version of this. In the anime for example, several episodes showed Oak and Elm waiting for trainers to pick their starters. In the Pokemon Zensho, Oak offered the starters for Red and Blue, while in Adventures it was entirely different. Regardless, I wasn’t trying to use strictly use any media as a basis here.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12551802/ I would just like to say, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to give such an in depth review. I am planning on getting out chapter 3 soon, but I will try to go back and fix as much as I can. I will say that I plan to focus on this being a more realistic scenario, and also in the future a few years. I felt that the age restriction would make sense with so many dangerous wild pokemon that could be roaming around, and crime, etc. This would also include that you could buy pokedexes now. I see now that the date might not be so clear, so I will try to fix that as well. Another thing that you mentioned, I am not planning on making it just focused around the gym curcuit. While it may seem to be the MCs objective at many points, it will not be all that takes place in the plot itself. Anyway, your review is really helpful and I will make sure to touch on all the things you pointed out. Thanks so much, and I hope you check back later today or tomorrow to see how it is!

[I felt that the age restriction would make sense with so many dangerous wild pokemon that could be roaming around, and crime, etc.]
Because a 13-year-old stands such a better chance against those than a 10-year-old? Really, the more you try to justify it the more problems you’re going to run into. If you want to write about an older character, just write about an older character without baking it into the setting. https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/142926917/1/TRAINERS-START-AT-TEN discusses this in further detail.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12551855/ Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a helpful review! I’m not a very good writer so reading reviews like this helps very much to see what faults I had in my writing. I will take what you wrote in mind and try to write better in the future.Thank you again for the wonderful help! :)
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12553307/ So what else would you say is wrong with the story?
secs ago
Well, it’s hard to say since, as I said, there isn’t much of a story yet. I’m generally leery of academy settings since there isn’t usually much that can happen in them, but if you do have a plot planned it could work.
You are capitalizing pokemon species, which is awkward and distracting; you don’t capitalize animal or mouse or dragon, after all.
4m agoWell, with the plot, there’s going to be a team that seeks to take control of the government of the region. When the headmaster of the academy steps in the way of them, they kill him. So, the team goes on to start taking control of everything. Thus, in the now anarchy ridden region, the students of the academy band together with the leftover professors to try and fight back.
What exactly do you mean? Don’t capitalize words like Treecko, or don’t capitalize words in their species category, like Double Headed Pokemon?

Sounds fine, but maybe you should have that at least start to happen in the first chapter.
[What exactly do you mean? Don’t capitalize words like Treecko, or don’t capitalize words in their species category, like Double Headed Pokemon?]
Don’t capitalize words like treecko or pokemon.
5m agoWell, I had that first chapter as the prologue. The actual first chapter will be the next part.
Okay, I’ll try and steer clear of it. I may slip up here and there, but I’ll try not to.
secs ago
[Well, I had that first chapter as the prologue.]
That’s not what a prologue is. A prologue is separate from the main story, often involving characters other than the main cast or being somewhat removed from the main plot, setting it up in some way, etc. This looked like an ordinary chapter to me.
Basically, I don’t see what is added by a chapter that’s just showing their ordinary life before the plot starts. Especially in a SYOC story, you need to get to the plot as soon as possible so people know what they’re submitting for. “Bad guys take over the school and the students form a resistance” gives us a lot more to work with than just a generic school setting.
What do you mean?secs ago
Of course not. But you might get more bounce than you would otherwise; people who might like the later chapters could get bored by the first chapter and leave before they continue. In terms of the submitted OCs… well, maybe, but you still get the final say on which ones go through. You’ll likely get more unsuitable candidates than you would otherwise, however.
I think the easiest solution here would be to combine your current first and second chapters so all new readers have an idea of the plot.
Then you can combine it when you finish, no worries.secs ago
Thinking on it, I honestly don’t think you should take OCs in the first place. Read this for an explanation: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/142912324/1/Stop-Asking-For-OCs
If you have trouble coming up with ideas for characters, it’s better to ask for just that: ideas. It’s much, much easier to work with a general idea than a fully-developed character; the latter often restricts you more than it enables you. If you want inspiration, I would recommend looking at this thread with that in mind — look for the forest, not the trees: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/128021680/1/Character-Bio-Thread
Poor baby does not have much SYOC experience I see. I submitted Chara and they got annoyed with me.

MissMassDestructionA response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12552277/ Thank you for taking time to review this, I know I’m not too great at writing so I’ll fix it and try my best to make the story a bit better :)
Qazzywaffles88A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12553269/ Thanks so much for your insight!
I’ll try to address as many of your points that I can.
(I apologize for the length in advance)
1. Weapons details
-looking back at it, it really doesn’t add much to the plot. I’ll try and revise that.2. Lack of other global powers
-I really just kind of wanted to create some sort of conflict here. For example, if I changed the story to “Russia attacked Eastern Europe and then the entire NATO alliance beat them back to Siberia”, which is a far more likely scenario then Russia taking on the entire world alone and winning, then that would take away a whole lot of the conflict. It’s the same reason why I left out nuclear weapons, and introduced the MiG 55 instead. Mach 5 means five times the speed of sound, which is nearly twice the speed of the fastest military aircraft; the SR 71 Blackbird (a spy plane with no armament). Anyways, I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m thinking of revising this to be more of an alliance between Russia and China, since they are already kind of allies as of right now. I do, however, plan to keep America as the leading opposition against Russia (and probably soon to be China, too). I know I may sound ignorant and naive when I say this, but I firmly believe that America is and will continue to be a global superpower, just as it has been in the past. Sure, the economy isn’t doing so well right now, but it wasn’t doing so well in the 1920s and 30s either, and right when America was attacked in 1941, it got itself together and basically beat Japan by itself while simulateously attacking Germany. Of course, that’s just my stupid 16 year old opinion, but I plan to keep it that way.
3. Draft vs selective service and opposition to draft
– The Selective Service System is the system the government uses to register young men in the event that a draft is needed. I now realize I should have included that the US was forced enact a draft in my story, and will add that in soon. Now as for the protests to the draft, Vietnam and WWIII as I have (unrealistically) depicted are very different in nature. Vietnam was supposed to stop the spread of communism in a country halfway around the world. People protested the draft for several reasons, ranging from voting rights (as you had mentioned), to political corruption (i.e. Imperialistic goals), to unclear objectives, and many more. In Vietnam, however, there wasn’t really a direct threat against the US itself (the Vietnamese did not directly attack the United States, and there wasn’t any real danger of that ever happening). In my scenario, however, the Russians are attacking South America, which is much closer to the US than Vietnam. While an attack on the US mainland would much more realistically gain support (in fact, I’m thinking of changing it from South America to Alaska), there is a threat of Russia gaining a foothold in the Americas, which is much more of a threat than if they were to gain control of Vietnam. Given that there is a clear threat against the well being of the American people (Russia aggressively expanding as it had done in Eastern Europe), and that the alternative is possibly not having enough manpower to successfully fend off Russian aggression (Mach 5 is fast enough to outrun most missiles), I think the people would be a bit more leaniant with a lowered selective service system age and an enacted draft. Of course, as I meantioned before, I am 16, and my arguement may be completely unrealistic and stupid, but I will revise the story to the best of my ability.
4. Various grammatical errors, format issues, and incorrect word usage
– Oops, my bad. Will fix ASAP.
5. Use of “Later” and how it ties in to Pokémon
– I used the word later to try and save some of the suspense for later chapters. Everything will be (hopefully) explained by chapter 4, which I plan to have published sometime this week, and if not, next week at latest (I already have chapters 2 and 3 prewritten, they need to be edited chapter 4 is halfway done). However, If you want to know how this ties into Pokémon right now, I’ll tell you, but it will kind of spoil the next three chapters for you. Before I get to the spoilers, however, I could send you the prewritten chapters I have via PM if you want to edit them. I totally understand if you don’t want to edit them (you probably have better things to do than to revise my doomed fanfiction), but help would be greatly appreciated.
Once again, thank you very much for taking the time to review my story. The rest of this response is going to be how this is going to be related to Pokémon. If you don’t want the main plot info I’ve been saving for chapters 3 and 4, you can stop reading now (not everything will be spoiled). If you’re fine with a few spoilers, read on.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Okay, so I’m going to arrange this story so that chapters 1 through 4 are explaining how Calem gets to Kalos. It is not canon whatsoever. If you’ve ever played Pokémon x or y, you can most likely recall the story of AZ and the terrible war that took place 3000 years ago (if you haven’t played Pokémon x or y, or forgot this part, go to YouTube and search “Pokémon generations episode 18”; they made it into an animated short. Don’t worry about copyright, it’s on the Pokémon official YouTube channel). AZ ended the war in the creation of the ultimate weapon. In my story, the “terrible war” that took place 3000 years ago is WWIII, and Albert Zay, as I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, is AZ. The ultimate weapon does not run off the life force of Pokémon, but instead creates Pokémon by affecting wildlife and objects in unexpected ways (this is not the main focus of the story, though, and most likely will be very minimally touched on if at all). The reason why I meantioned time dilation in chapter one was sort of as a plot device hidden in Calem interrupting Ryan. The beam of energy grazing the side of the plane interferes with the internal components of the drive, while also disrupting the mentioned electromagnetic field (also a plot device) for protection against time dilation. Of course, I’m pretty sure this isn’t scientifically accurate, but neither are Pokémon, right? Anyways, the field is down and Calem is unconscious due to the rapid acceleration to light speed. He is experiencing time dilation but only for two minutes, right? Wrong! The internal mechanisms damaged by the laser allow the drive to keep working, but inhibit the auto deceleration feature, which means the drive keeps going and going until Calem finally awakens two and a half weeks later from a coma-like state. During the two and a half weeks in orbit, three thousand years have passed on Earth due to time dilation (inspiration for the time dilation comes from both the movie Interstellar, and the TV series Ancient Aliens). Anyways, the rest of the story is going to consist of Calem traveling with Ash’s group from the anime, while also having Calem in his G suit (which everyone calls “Infinity”) acting as sort of a hero for various situations (I don’t want to spoil any more for you. If you agree to edit and/or you are fine with a few more spoilers, I can tell you more).
Once again, thanks for your review.

[Draft vs selective service and opposition to draft]
I think you really underestimate how much the US populace hates the government forcing them to do things. And if they lowered the draft age to 16, there would be a lot more than just 16-year-olds protesting the government throwing *literal children* into a war. This would be more plausible if you removed the age drop and switched the focus to a country that is not so vehemently anti-government and has garnered less distrust towards its military.
[Everything will be (hopefully) explained by chapter 4]
Okay, but see, that’s exactly my problem. Your readers shouldn’t have to wait four chapters to learn what the story’s about. You should always reach the plot within the first chapter or restructure your plot so that you are able to do so.

“5. Use proper textual formatting. For example: using only capital letters in the story title, summary, or content is not only incorrect but also a disregard for the language itself.”
I assume the same goes for lower case. In terms of Pokemon. The names for the Pokemon should have a capital letter at the beginning as well as related people like: Pokemon Professor.
But hey what do I know? I’m a troll who likes making stuff up to harass people. (Sarcasm FYI)

A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12555926/ Thank you. I have always had a hard time with understanding proper grammar. For some reason my brain just can’t process it properly and I get confused. This is actually a big help.
I did know about capitalizing when it came to the pokemon like: the pikachu vs. Pikachu, Ash’s companion, but sometimes my phone wants to capitalize it for me and I don’t always catch it because I don’t think to look for it.
I thought I did put it under Anime, guess I’ll have to go back and double check.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12555909/ Damn, constructive criticism is one thing, but this is really just nitpicking at unnecessary details.
The capitalization argument falls flat when you consider how it is officially spelled in-canon. For example, in-game, Tapu Koko is ALWAYS referred as “Tapu Koko”. Even a ‘Machoke’ in Alola is ALWAYS referred to as ‘Machoke’. This is going by how CANON treats it, so you can’t say the capitalization is incorrect.
The second paragraph is nitpicking to an unbelievable and insane degree. Who on earth CARES between:
[“Hello,” she said]
[“Hello!” she said]
[“Hello.” She said]
[“Hello”, she said]The third paragraph more or less misses the entire point of the fic, and it is EXPLICITLY spelled out here that the Pokémon are anthropomorphic. If you have a problem with it, that’s not an issue on my part.
I don’t even know why I entertained you with a response, but I’m really not taking this ‘constructive’ criticism seriously.

https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread
“No matter how far away things are, a Pilot’s eyes can see them!” The games do not model correct capitalization in other respects either. Go look up the actual grammar rules for capitalizing “professor”. Notice how the games spit upon that. Then go look at how the games started off writing it PIKACHU and POTION, so no, the games don’t even consistently do it your way.
The games also gave us the hideous “Legendary Dragon-type Pokemon” construction, either because treating all these words as trademarks in-universe means they can’t use plural forms so “Legendary Dragons” was out, or because they simply hate decent writing just that much.
[Who on earth CARES]
Everyone. Grammar is not optional.
But since you asked, this is actually very important. The difference between whether a piece of narration describes what’s being said (or what part of speech is being described) or whether it’s a separate action is frequently used by authors to convey subtle nuances in writing. When you don’t use the formats consistently, you make it difficult for readers and authors both to convey and understand those nuances. (Relatedly, the purpose of grammar is to remove ambiguity from writing and make it easier for the reader to parse the text. When you disregard grammar, you are outsourcing that effort to your readers, which is extremely inconsiderate.) From another thread:
https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/21887406/1/Writing-Guide-Part-One-Grammar
Verbs and Speech Tags:
There are also a number of verbs that are generally not speech tags at all, but occasionally can be used as one.
Laugh is a good example here. You can only use laugh with one or two word sentences.
“No,” she laughed: okay. You can manage a short word like no in the middle of a laugh.
“That was a good joke,” she laughed: not okay. You can’t manage multiple syllables and full sentences in the middle of a laugh.
In most cases, you want to use said or another speech tag and add laughed as a second verb. But this can also have problems.
“That was a good joke,” she said, and laughed.
Here, she’s just said it’s a good joke, and then laughed, something people rarely do. She either doesn’t think it’s a good joke and is forcing a laugh, or her statement and laugh are sarcastic, or she is a robot that has to complete the joke analysis before she can decide to laugh. You might also just use this with a more reserved character, who wouldn’t burst out laughing immediately.
She laughed. “That was a good joke,” she said.
You’re more likely to have situations where a person laughs, then speaks. Note that laughed ends in a period – more on that in the next section.
You can also indicate that she’s laughing the whole time.
“That was a good joke,” she said, laughing.
Laughing, unlike laughed, has -ing at the end, which makes it an ongoing action. If the joke was funny and she’s laughing over it before and after she speaks, this is how you’d refer to it.
Why is this important? Because all three things mean different actions. If she laughs once or if she’s laughing the whole time will change different characters and different situations. You may even write a story where you want “That was a good joke,” she said, and laughed. and when you do, you’re going to want people to know that was what you meant, not just that she was laughing at a joke.
If you write sloppily, people will just assume odd wording is an error on your part. And if enough other people write sloppily, people will get used to assuming all odd wording is an error on everyone’s part, even if you personally are more careful.
Summary:
Not all verbs, even sound verbs, are speech tags.
If you want to use a verb as a speech tag, make sure it’s possible to say your sentence in that manner.
If this is confusing you, just don’t use a verb as a speech tag that you’re unsure of. Pick a different speech tag to use and put the verb in the narration by itself, but pay attention to where you’re putting the verb.
Minor changes can change the overall meaning.
Farla wants to be able to write stuff like “That was a good joke,” she said, and laughed. sometimes and have people know she means something different than just that a character both laughed and said a sentence. So please pay attention to what you write.
[it is EXPLICITLY spelled out here that the Pokémon are anthropomorphic]
Yes, I saw that. I fail to see how it addresses my point. I don’t care what justification you have for why your pokemon are anthro. They shouldn’t be anthro in the first place. This isn’t a visual medium where it can be justified with aesthetic or visual interest; this is text, and your insistence that these humans are pokemon does nothing but distract from your actual story. You need to ask yourself why you are choosing to write this as fanfiction when original fiction is an option. What can you do with Pokemon that you can’t do with your own original setting?

Prodigal Writer123A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12553746/ First of all, thank you for the great feedback. It’s hard to get any constructive feedback on this site at all, I find. The links that you gave definitely helped me realise what I was doing wrong, although I am a bit daunted by the thought of changing too much of the first chapter. I guessed someone would mention the capitalisation errors. That’s mainly put down to the fact that my text editor auto-corrects pokemon to Pokemon and doesn’t have any feature for adding to dictionary, so assumes that garchomp is a proper noun.
While I can see where you are coming from with the age requirement being changed as a bad idea, but it’s really a catch 22 in my opinion. The pokemon universe can clearly be seen as dangerous, especially for things such as dragon types, and yet the games show preschoolers with some. Trying to make a realistic universe is just too difficult for something like Pokemon, with how inconsistent it can seem.
I read through tons of topics on the forums you sent, and want to drastically change how I make the story progress. I personally believe what I currently have is fine, but should be expanded upon. Please, if you mind, could you give some advice on how you personally think the story should start based on what little substantive information my story currently has.secs ago
[The pokemon universe can clearly be seen as dangerous, especially for things such as dragon types, and yet the games show preschoolers with some.]
…So they clearly aren’t actually dangerous, no matter how much it may seem. That’s not necessarily unrealistic; pokemon are consistently shown to be extremely tame and intelligent. This is likely a consequence of Pokemon being a kiddie franchise, but it remains true, regardless. You can make a more grimdark universe if you want, but you should acknowledge it’s an AU, and not necessarily more “realistic” than anything else. (I’d advise not worrying too much about realism, anyway. This is a fantasy universe. Your readers aren’t here for the realism. Before anything else, you should focus on what makes a good story.)
[Please, if you mind, could you give some advice on how you personally think the story should start based on what little substantive information my story currently has.]
I can’t, because as I said, you cut off before any plot starts. I’d have to know what your plot is to know how it could be effectively restructured. However, unless there is some greater purpose to them getting the garchomp egg, I would advise not handing your protagonist a super special pokemon right out of the gate, as it makes them look like a Mary Sue who gets massive advantages without earning them. I would also recommend retooling them into an established, older trainer who can therefore more, ahem, realistically interact with whatever black ops plot you have planned without tons of level grinding first.
Okay then. I didn’t think you would be able to give any ideas.I just can’t see the Pokemon franchise in a good light after reading some of the creepy pasta that’s around it seems. I will most likely take down the story and do a complete restructure from the basic plans.
A response to your review at https://www.fanfiction.net/r/12553659/ Thanks for those comments. I have already done what you have asked me to do. Please also review my newly Harry Potter and Pokemon crossover that I am doing with my friend. I learnt so much from you. Thanks.
Hello. You don’t know me, I’m here because of curiosity. I’ve been reading a couple of Pokemon Fic’s and sadly I hate to say, not many of them are very good. However I’ve ran into you’re recent one and despite it being a bit dull for my taste, I enjoyed it at the same time.
But I had only found it because of your reviews. You see, when I read a story and I don’t find it interesting by the second chapter. I see the reviews and I use them to give me a small hint, on why the story will be alright.
As much, as I understand what you are trying to do and trying to teach, I can’t help and frown at your words.
You may have forgotten, because of more experience or because you’ve been around longer, but I think you need to remember. Most people in he Pokemon fandoms, are young and inexperienced.
I highly suggest, when you write a review. Try to make it the positive and negative sandwich.
You say something nice, put the negative in the middle and end it of with something positive. I’m sure if you start doing this method, you will find, not only wouldn’t you look like a copy cat or a stuck up, but a decent person.
Or at least think about the way you would reacted, if someone was giving you advice. Would you be thankful, if a person told you something – like the way I suggested? Would you be less angerly or less hurt?
Have a good day.

Good luck, I wish you well and I look forward into you proving me wrong. After all, by the end of the day, you just want the person to improve on what they normally have. And if you still can’t find anything or if you don’t want to be proved wrong, than you can always offer to be a beta.

Brand names are capitalized as any other name. In our world, there’s a person who made up a bunch of letters for imaginary magic animals and then trademarked them so other people can’t use it. That gets capitalized. In their world, pokemon are real and no one owns a copyright on any of it, while any imaginary brand names you make up do get capitalized despite not being actual brand names with actual real world legal protections. Also, Bulbapedia currently capitalizes all uses of “professor”, so they’re just generally wrong here.
For another example of this, the first line of the book The Hobbit, which contains a Hobbit ™ owned by Tolkien estate with dire legal consequences on else anyone using, is In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.
When it is used as part of a name, yes. Not when it is used as a standalone object.
No. In that case it would be capitalized; titles are usually capitalized when they are used in place of a name (because then they are standing in for proper nouns). I mean when they are used as common nouns, such as “Barack Obama used to be a law professor” or “Kukui is a pokemon professor”. Notice how that sentence differs from the one on the Bulbapedia page for Kukui.secs ago

The thread. The thread with all the answers is right there. You’ve linked it like four times. I don’t understand, are they trolling you?
Could be they just didn’t bother to follow the link, opting to continue arguing instead.
This is amazing.
