Thank you for reviewing. It will help me to write correctly next time. Sorry for capitalizing random words. I wasn’t paying attention to that. And I don’t speak English with my family or my friends. They don’t really speak it. We just speak in French, normally. Sorry if capitalizing pokemon’s names is making you an hard time reading.

You did said to not message you about it, but sorry. I think you need an explaining. I don’t consider pokemons as simple animals. I don’t know why. But you’re right. I shouldn’t capitalize species’s names. I’m gonna correct it as soon as I can. I can’t capitalize random words.

Thanks for reviewing ! I will take your advises for my next chapters. I like reviews like these.

secs agoOkay, look… quite frankly, your English isn’t advanced enough to be writing stories in the language. I can barely understand you even in conversation. You need to really master a language before you can write stories well. I think you should write in French for now.
1h agoWriting in English helps me understanding it and writing it. If I continue to get some reviews like these, my stories should get better. Sorry if you can barely understand what i’m trying to say. It’s okay. After all, I really like useful reviews like the one you do.
1h agoI will try to edit my work.

Thank you for the review! And, while I do think that it’s nice of you to try and do this for me, some of the things I do are stylistic choices, and I DO makes mistakes sometimes. I admittedly didn’t put much effort into this story, since I’m mostly busy with other things, such as my actual book. So, if it’s hard to follow or it seems like I’m distracted while I’m writing it, that’s because I am.

I’d read that link, but then again, this was just for fun, and I don’t care much about it~ I had a plan for it, but by now I’ve long forgotten it, and I’m considering taking this story down.

Thanks + apology

I saw your review on my story. I found it a bit confusing at first, but after reading it through, it made much more sense. Forgive my mistakes, I’m a bit new to this whole publishing concept. Thanks!

(If you read my pm to you, then ignore this; it’s essentially just a repeat.)

I capitalized the words like “Discharge” only because it was in front of “pokémon.” So the Discharge pokémon was another name for Manectric. However, I completely agree with you on the over-capitalization problem. Thank you for the advice, as well as the horizontal line button. As for the “world:any” issue, I failed to see it while working on the story. My bad :/

You are right about most of the things, except I know that a prelude is, I was writing an introduction pretty much. I forgot to add the lines.

I will take the name of the story out of the document. This one was too short for paragraphs. And now I know that I should not capitalize the names of Pokemon. Thanks for the advice, I will try to write better, and thanks for the review bro. Or sis, I don’t know. But please continue to read the next chapters.

Your welcome for the response. Please continue to send me your thoughts on my later chapters.

[This one was too short for paragraphs.]

That should be a sign that it is too short to be a chapter.

What is a prelude, in your own words?

13m agoA short background to the story. So how about you listen to the story first?
12m agoIts like an intro.

secs agoNo, a prologue/prelude isn’t short, and it’s not necessarily an introduction either, though it can be. It’s a full story in and of itself that is separate from the main story in some way. What you have is just a first chapter — or more accurately, one scene of a first chapter, because chapters need to be more than single scenes. Again, you should really read this

Hi,Thank you so much for your review.

I guess the title is a little strange with the inconsistent capitalization. Thank you for pointing that out.

I thought that I had added lines in all the places I had them in my word document, but I’ll be sure to go back over it and see if I missed any spots.

As for not writing the chapter numbers in the chapter, I understand your opinion, but I think I’m going to keep that as is. I find that when I read something with multiple chapters, I usually just click “next” and don’t pay attention to the chapter numbers in the dropdown menu. The only way I know what chapter I am on is if I scroll all the way down to look at the bottom or go back up to look at the top where the chapter number is, so I appreciate it when authors put it up top as well.

Thanks for the tip on capitalizing the species name. I was using Bulbapedia as reference on how to do that, but after looking over the thread you provided as well as other fics that I read, I get why capitalizing it all the time can get confusing. I’m currently going over the chapter to see where it would be appropriate to capitalize and where it would not since Gemma is at a weird point towards the end of the chapter where she’s kind of taking ownership of Gilly, but not calling her by her name (after all, she doesn’t want to get too close) and so in the edit it may be a little inconsistent at those points.

I hope you continue to read this, I’m pretty excited about what I have planned. As I said, it’s mostly a character driven plot with major points already sketched out, but still pretty variable on how the characters get there. In the chapters I’ve already written, there have been a few times where I wrote something down and it turned out to change the story quite a bit. I’ll look into the other threads you provided to see if there’s anything I can incorporate to make my story better.

Thank you again for your review. It’s my first time publishing, so getting constructive criticism like this is really helpful for my future writing!

Also, this idiot from way back in April decided to shout into the void again for some reason:

I really wish there was a way to let all these people know that writing fiction in English is not the way to get better at English, or any other language for that matter. Communicating to people in English is. Thinking on your feet in English is. The hardest part of teaching yourself a language is the lack of having a practice partner (who, preferably, is a native speaker of the language) to help you. And that’s basically what writing is.

With writing, you’re just throwing your words into the wind, and any mistakes you make are just reinforced. There’s no point in practicing something incorrectly. Practice only makes perfect if it’s perfect practice. Doing something one thousand times, incorrectly, only makes it harder to learn the correct way to do something. They’re really not helping themselves by doing this.

I understand how he considers the capitalization of pokemon species and the use of page breaks to be stylistic, but the rest of your criticisms weren’t, and if he intends on writing an actual book (which, from the sound of things, he wants to publish seriously), he should really write more seriously.

I can understand the idea of writing something on the side for fun. I do that all the time. I do literally all my writing for personal enjoyment, but when I get stuck, I might take some time to write something else (usually, a side story to what I’m stuck on) to kind of clear my head and give me some time to think over my knot, while still keeping my creative muscles active. It usually works out pretty well for me. But I still write my side-projects with the same level of technical quality as my main work. Again, only perfect practice make perfect. It’s far easier for me to keep the fluffy slice-of-life filler out of where it’s not meant to be than to keep improper capitalization due to speech verbs. Part of why I write the fluffy slice-of-life sidestories is to get it out of my system without putting it in my serious writing, come to think of it.

(Incidentally, I have a question about on speech verbs: Is there anything more to it than “only the things that are literally describing talking count as speech verbs”, like “stated” or “exclaimed”, and anything else like “sighed” or “laughed” are separate sentences that need to be capitalized? I think I might be overthinking this problem a little and messing myself up. I generally make people laughing or what-have-you be separate sentences regardless so I rarely think about it.)

This one was too short for paragraphs.

Maybe he thinks “prelude” and “teaser” are synonyms? I clicked to read the fic just to see how long it actually was. I was expecting him to be totally correct, and that his four or five sentence teaser would actually be too small for paragraphs. But nope. He’s not even right about how pointlessly short this story was. Despite how short it is, I didn’t even bother trying to actually read it, because there’s no way I could keep my eyes on the same line long enough to get through this.

Why do you torment yourself with this endeavour, Mini-Farla? I know there are people who might listen, but are those people ever the ones writing fic about fucking gardevoir?

(Interestingly, the day after you reviewed it, someone else left a review saying “Not bad. But you need to put in paragraphs.” So even the people who wanted to read it thought it was hard to follow.)

Just let me write my story.

The interesting thing is, when you think about it, this is exactly what you’re telling him to do. He posted his story before he’d even really written a single chapter of it. What would you tell him if he how to know when he’d finished a chapter one? I get if a chapter five is only a few paragraphs long for narrative reasons, especially if you’re jumping around quickly between several viewpoints to show different parts of a single event or something like that, but how do you know you have a finished chapter one and you’re ready to post it to the internet and start on chapter two? I’ve never done that before, so I’d like to know.

(Personally, I’d probably write at least five chapters before posting something, because I’ve written a lot of chapters ones that spent all my interest in a topic and then moved on to another chapter one. But I’m my only audience so I don’t really care when that happens. But if I was writing for a non-me audience, I’d like to make sure I could keep the momentum going before posting anything.)

    Dusklight77

Does anyone know what this guy is talking about? I just checked a random fic with multiple chapters I had bookmarked (oh hey it’s Farla’s brilliant thesis on why she’s better at pokemon fanfiction than anyone else and why they’re all evil scum for not doing it her way or whatever it is) and it totally has the chapter selection bar at both the top and bottom.

In fact, the chapter is short enough that I am literally looking at both of them at the same time. What’s the difference between scrolling back to the top to look at the bar or scrolling to the top to look at the first line of text? You’re still scrolling up.

    1. Mini-Farla says:

That’s actually a good explanation about using stories for language practice. Mind if I use it as a copypasta?

On the speech verbs thing, generally yes, but “sighed” can be used as a speech verb sometimes. Farla’s grammar guide explains this in great detail.

      1. CrazyEd says:

Hm, I think I get it. It’s like the “whatever” of a sullen and sulky teen. It is both speech and a sigh, so it can be sighed. Makes sense.

Fair payment. Use my explanation as you will (I’d probably edit it a little first, if I was you, though). Take the idea, make it your own, add it to your copypasta library.
