The Other Pokeauthors, Part 61

Pokemon are usually spelled with a Capital even when its not a single member of a species. I’ve seen that being the case for alot of other Pokemon Fiction here & its a force of habit for me that will very likely never go away.

The Summary is cut off, i was limited to how many words in the Summary unlike FictionPress where i could post as big of a summary as i want. I had a more detailed summary there but i had to cut it down to size here. Also using “and” would be impossible with the character limit & i prefer to use “&” anyway.

Really? Didn’t see that on the TOS. Also that is my righting style & i’ve seen many other stories doing that writing style that have been here for years & don’t seem tio be a problem, so i’m a little skeptical about that claim.

I find it very funny that i originally posted this on FictionPress & i was told that Pokemon stuff don’t belong there & i need to post it here & when i do, i’m now getting told that my story isn’t allowed here for my writing style? secs ago[Really? Didn’t see that on the TOS.]

Then you didn’t read it very thoroughly.

16m agoI did read it thoroughly, in fact i just read it again just now & not only do i not see anything about my writing style. I’ve seen many other things on the guidelines that aren’t supposedly allowed but i see it regularly both here & FictionPress on stories that are years old & are still up. So its quite obvious that the rules & guildlines aren’t being enforced
secs agoEntries not allowed:
6. Chat/script format and keyboard dialogue based entries.

Rules exist for a reason. Just because they aren’t being enforced isn’t a reason not to follow them. Script format is not a “writing style”, it is a format used exclusively for screen and theater writing. If you’re going to be submitting to a literature archive, write actual literature. Your flagrant disregard for the rules is extremely rude and inconsiderate to both the site administrators and your audience.

Incidentally, the rules are enforced, they’re just enforced unpredictably. Stories can and will be taken down without warning or explanation. Keep breaking the rules if you want, but know you do so at your own risk.

11m agothats why i’ve seen many stories also Chat/script format and keyboard dialogue based entries. up for years on here & yet they are still there. Including this story has been on FictionPress for over a year. If you aren’t gonna enforce the rules, Then there is no reason for them to be there. Perhaps they should be enforced. Also the fact that there are many stories i’ve seen doing this shows that its NOT just exclusively for screen and theater writing. People use & prefer this style, including me & its not gonna change. Also seeing how you’e the ONLY person complaining about this. Perhaps people don’t care about it as much as you think.

So if FanFiction has Rules about their stories, START ENFORCING THEM, enforced unpredictably is not a good excuse

I had no idea I lacked so much here, first of all. Secondly, I made pheromosa different from your stereotypical pheromosa: give her a personality, let her have some hints of kindness. What’s wrong with her being DIFFERENT?! Third, I was gonna go straight to the apocalypse at first, but I thought I would be rushing it, which was what I was trying to avoid. I figured I give what exactly happened with everything that led up to it, like this movie I saw called “The Martain”. That’s the movie that inspired this… in a way.

Fourth and final thing: I’ll change the writing style to what I usually do, if that’ll make you feel any better, but as for pheromosa and the story itself, they won’t change… well, I might change the storyline a bit. I’ll see how I feel about it whenever I look back at it. Until then, deal with what I got for now.

secs ago[What’s wrong with her being DIFFERENT?!]

Because you’re writing fanfiction, not original fiction.

There’s a fine line between being different and throwing canon out the window. When you’re writing derivative work, not everything goes. Fanfiction’s greatest strength is that it draws from a shared pool of knowledge (the original canon). This allows you to get into the thick of things without having to establish every little character and setting detail, and lets you engage with ideas the whole fandom has been examining — likely branching out in different interpretations, as you say. But in order for that to work, you are constrained to work within that shared pool. All fanfiction readers go into a work assuming the canon (and/or their personal fanon) holds true by default. If you deviate from that unexpectedly, your readers are going to feel frustrated, confused, and betrayed. What else is going to change? Is your portrayal of their favorite character going to actually turn out to be an original character with the favorite character’s name? Is a fundamental component of the setting they’re really invested in going to turn out to not exist? If that was the only reason they clicked on your story in the first place, they’re going to feel cheated, and rightfully so. It’s chaos. Maybe the story is good on its own merits, but it’s still not going to be what your readers expect, and that’s only going to lead to dissatisfaction.

Like… you can still have a pheromosa being kind and learning to care for the world. But that’s not something that would happen automatically. There are obstacles to overcome — being a stranger in this vast world full of inhabitants that must seem as strange to her as she is to us, for one, and, well, there must be a reason why ultra beasts seek out the wormholes so obsessively. Are they in pain, like humans are in their world? Is their experience simply diminished without it, like losing a sense? Whatever the reason, there is clearly something they miss about ultra space. It’s not impossible for her to love the world in spite of all that, but her situation would be more complicated than just love at first sight.

10h agoI write these stories because I love to show my fandom towards these characters. I write for my enjoyment and so should the readers themselves: read for the entertainment. How we all portray these characters is entirely up to the writer’s imagination and the readers should have an open mind that’s big enough to accept it all from left and right, no matter what.

I’ve been writing these stories since I was 14 years old. I’m 27 years old now and have written 29 more stories than you, compared to your 5 within the past 10 years since your first completed story. Apparently, since 2007, it seems like all of my other 33 stories are okay to you. I’ve had more experience and I know what I’m doing.

Besides, it’s been about two years since I’ve written a brand new story from scratch and, despite all this expertise, I’m a bit rusty. Give me some time to revive my first chapter writing skills, okay?

And this time, don’t repeat what I write to you. Just reply without my echo.

secs ago[How we all portray these characters is entirely up to the writer’s imagination]

I’m sorry but no, it really isn’t. If you don’t like that, you can always write original fiction. But the rules are different for derivative fiction. That’s just how it is.

12m agoOkay, you’re right. But still… it wouldn’t hurt to think outside the box every once in a while. I’m keeping my pheromosa the way I wrote her. I already worked too hard on even thinking of this story. Get used to it!!!

Many thanks for the constructive feedback. I won’t make excuses of myself, I’ve been trying to get better with formatting dialogue. This should help greatly. I actually got a few grammatical things, like not capitalising pokemon, from reviews from you and… Farla I think. Haven’t caught them all it seems…

For a few things, for Keira’s name. I actually do have a thing in this story where pokemon DO have names, except they are very personal and few ever learn what they are. Keira hasn’t told him because of personal reasons.

I have thought a lot over the legal and ethical considerations of pokemon training, battling and all that. It is a messy, perverted, even twisted thing. But it is the norm in that world. It won’t be something just completely glossed over, I might not be able to really do it ‘right’ from our point of view, I try though.

The first/third person switch is something I’ll need to think hard on. You are right, it is disorientating and evoke different responses. It was originally third person, so I should be able to switch it back… the main reason why I kept it like this was that my beta did enjoy it.

Finally, I do agree. On some reflection, nothing happens beyond just the very end. Normally I do tell the backstory slowly, when narratively appropriate. I can’t believe I’ve made a mistake like this. This’ll be interesting to sort out.

Other than that, thank you for taking the time to help ^^

secs ago[But it is the norm in that world.]

But humans understanding pokemon isn’t the norm. N was a complete doormat and it still took a whole game of arm-twisting for him to decide battling was fine. I’d argue that basic human empathy would make one at least feel a little uncomfortable to learn that things we treated as dumb animals were in fact people. It’s not impossible to justify someone going on the beat-up-pokemon-for-personal-glory quest anyway, but they need more of a reason for it, and you have to acknowledge that there aren’t many workable reasons beyond “they’re a horrible person”.

I feel bad for you, getting those hateful reviews telling you to die only because you spoke the truth about other people’s stories instead of hiding your disappointment with nice words. This story was and is amazing, and being a trial captain would be a perfect fit for hau. I don’t know who’s behind the screen, by don’t be depressed about the reviews, and write more awesome stories!

Criticism on my story
Jul 24PurpleKirby21
Firstly, thank you for the constructive criticism. This is personal my first full on story, so every bit helps. Second, I know that Arceus is overused and misused… but I chose Arceus due to its ability to become any type. That way, it connects all of the heroes together. Third, the OOCish characters is mainly there to make somethings like a smarter ash or a partnership that would normally never happen. Finally, for the writing advise, I’ll keep it in mind when writing the next chapter. Thank you again.
-PK

secs agoI don’t see why other gods can’t make a chosen one of each type just because they can’t change type themselves.

[like a smarter ash]

A smarter Ash is not Ash. Stupidity is a fundamental part of Ash’s character. If you hate Ash so much, just make an OC instead of using his name.

15m agoI understand that you may dislike the idea of Arceus, but I feel that works for my story. As with Ash, it was just an example. Ash will still be the lovable idiot everyone knows… just a bit more mature. He’s 18 in this story.
Now while I accept criticism with open arms… I feel as though you just hate the concepts I’m using. Others before me have done the same thing, WAY before I even started writing. I accept the grammar criticism… when it comes to plot however, the plotline has been preset.

And another idiot responded to my review with a review:

StarburstC

Yeh, I know about the line thing. but sometimes it just doesn’t appear, therefore the different font. and this is a short story emphasis on like 300 words? paragraphs… meh… it’s just a random story.

Blocked when I said that’s not an excuse. This is what I get for combing for off-the-record responses.

Wow, that first guy is pretty much the perfect summation of why you review absolutely everyone, isn’t it? Everyone else does it, so it’s okay if he does it, and because it’s okay if he does it, it’s okay if everyone else does it.

I do see what he says about capitalizing pokemon species names being a force of habit. It’s a force of habit for me as well. Could you tell? I actually skim these posts before I make them specifically to make sure I’ve capitalized pokemon and pokemon names correctly to try to break myself of this habit. I think I’ve gotten pretty good at catching it.

compared to your 5 within the past 10 years

You know, he raises a point about something I’ve been meaning to ask about: Why do you have so few stories? I would’ve expected someone so invested in reviewing Pokemon fanfiction and increasing the average quality of it would be writing more of his own. I’ve had pings of temptation to write things just to add to tiny fandom pools just skimming through AOOO’s meager offerings of some series I love (and even some I hate, which really surprised me), and I’ve never even wrote fanfiction before.

    1. St. Elmo's Fire says:

I’m just not very creative, especially not in the area of Pokemon. I have a few more fics on my AOOO page, but they’re all in other fandoms. Currently, I’m also spending all my time working on an ill-conceived Undertale trollfic that is looking to be longer than a NaNoWriMo novel because I can never say anything in less than ten thousand words.

      1. CrazyEd says:

About a week ago, I was so frustrated with the terrible quality of ASoIaF fanfiction on AOOO (not everything needs to be a harry potter crossover you guys), I actually wrote my own ASoIaF fanfiction. It’s nothing I’m insanely proud of, but it doesn’t have the Jon Snow/Sansa Stark tag, at least.

And because I am unable to say anything in less than ten thousand words myself, I decided to limit myself to drabbles. 700 words down, 9,300 to go.

        1. Hinebras says:

” I was so frustrated with the terrible quality of ASoIaF fanfiction on AOOO … I actually wrote my own ASoIaF fanfiction.”
Good. That was the main reason I started to write fics, get all the tropes that were repeated unendlessly on the fics I read, and subvert them just because I was so sick of all it. I wanted them to try something new, anything new. So, I wrote fics I would like read, mainly subversions and parodies from a genre in the community.

          1. CrazyEd says:

Yeah, until you start skimming through summaries of My Hero Academia fanfictions and are so frustrated with how bad the most popular shipping pairs are that you’re almost tempted to write My Hero Academica shipfic despite not being a shipper or a fan of My Hero Academia.

All who ship two characters together, regardless of how much sense it makes, just because they like those two characters individually will fall before my sword.

            1. Hinebras says:

“…that you’re almost tempted to write My Hero Academica shipfic despite not being a shipper or a fan of My Hero Academia.”
Yeah, been there. I’m planning on writing a SkittyxWailord shipfic just to troll the pokeshippings. I would like to write one with Ash, but I think fics with Ash as a prota come from all kind of bizarre scenarios and setting themselves up to the point that they have become a parody of themselves.

            2. CrazyEd says:

You’re doing it wrong. Anyone who sees a summary of that is going to know immediately why it was written. You’ve gotta be more subtle, and lure them in, and then bam. Envenomate them, liquify their insides, and drink them.

              Reply
        2. CrazyEd says:

Oh, actually, I would like to ask for a more experienced person’s opinion on how to post them.

I was thinking of posting them once I finished ten, but how should I arrange them? Ten chapters, each with a single drabble? Just putting them all in a single chapter and ordering them chronologically or some other internal scheme? I tried looking for what everyone else was doing, but most of what’s labelled “drabble” is actually around 500 words. That’s more than enough for a single chapter for each. But at 100 words, no more and no less, it seems like mine are a bit… scant… to merit posting to separate chapters (though I do like the idea that posting them separately would give me an author’s note for each one to give my director’s commentary…).

And then what if I wrote another ten more? Add them as chapter 2 (or 11 through 20)? Should I label the first batch of 10 as complete and post #11 through #20 as a second fic entirely?

And, on that train of thought, I have two more sorta-related questions.

1.) What would a good word for those 400 – 500 word fics be?

2.) Do hyphenated words count as one word or is “lady-in-waiting” three?

          1. illhousen says:

What would a good word for those 400 – 500 word fics be?

Ficlet or snap fiction are established terms.

Do hyphenated words count as one word or is “lady-in-waiting” three?

I’d say yes if they’re stable, established constructions that are used often in English. The primary purpose of writing drabbles is a writing exercise, so relying on hyphenated words to convey more meaning and bloat the drabble too much would defeat the purpose.

            1. CrazyEd says:

              Ficlet or snap fiction

Eeeeh, I don’t really like either of those. Oh well. I guess I’ll find some way to survive. However will I manage?

Doing these drabbles has taught me one thing above all: I’d really probably be happier with a length of around that (and a format that doesn’t require counting words). I’m going to see these ten drabbles through, but next time, I think I’ll do pentadrabbles or decadrabbles.

(And then, a month later, I’ll come back saying that doing snap fiction has taught me I really need 1,000 or 2,000 words, and a month after that I’ll say three chapters and a month after that…)

              if they’re stable, established constructions

The ones I’ve been avoiding using are things like “half-brother” and “lady-in-waiting”, so I think those would count. Your logic makes perfect sense to me, so that’s what I’ll be using.
