I thank you for the critique and help for my story, this will be really helpful.

But, I do have to say that people do like to write differently. I’m not trying to make this a tv show, what I’m trying to do is make it feel like a tv show, because that’s what it’s supposed to be, a tv show, just in a different world where pokemon are the dominant species and humans do not exist. The only reason I write to make it feel like a tv show isn’t to try and get it to become a tv show. The way you spoke on that was a bit harsh and you should realize that people do like to write differently, or that some people like to portray the writing to make it feel like something else other than a book.

Also I enjoy centering it, personally. I don’t feel like it changes how difficult it is to read, all it really does is centers the text, which can be used to make it look more formal, though I only really use it because I personally prefer how it looks over left or right centering.

This is a fanfiction website, not a place to publish books, yet you’re critiquing it like it is a place for serious books to be published, which isn’t something you should be doing to be honest. The criticism is accepted, something people do need, but being harsh about it is just going a bit too far, all it will really earn you is some blocks, seeing as some people do see criticism as a bad thing already. And just because the pokemon are acting like humans doesn’t mean it’s not pokemon fanfiction, although I do see how it should belong in Pokemon Crossovers. They are still Pokemon, just because they’re acting similar to humans doesn’t just make them not pokemon.

Thank you for pointing out the grammar errors in my story! You have some good points that I really appreciate. I must say, however, that I won’t be changing much to fit everything you suggested, simply because I don’t feel the need to. For example, in real life we hear and read news about countries on the other side of the world, so why would it be any different in the Pokemon universe?
secs ago[For example, in real life we hear and read news about countries on the other side of the world, so why would it be any different in the Pokemon universe?]

Well, no, but this goes a bit further than that. You don’t just have characters being generally aware of foreign affairs, you have them incorporating them fully into their life. If an American heard about a terrorist attack on US soil, it’s weird for their first thought to be that the yakuza did it, and not the K** or ISIS or any number of domestic terrorists that are far more likely to have the means and access. And while it wouldn’t be impossible, it’d also be really unusual for an American to swear by a Japanese god unless they were a Japanese immigrant themselves. Topaz is acting like they’re in poke-Japan where these things could be happening right next door, and not a world away.

1h agoAlso you might want to turn the swear filter off, it does annoying things like censor the Klu Klux Klan, apparently.
11m agoTrue, true. I didn’t think of that. I’ll edit the story when I have time to include input from her mom, since she’s currently in Johto and has been for a few months. That’ll make more sense. Probably should’ve done that in the first place, huh?

Also, I just turned off the filter. It IS a bit silly that they feel the need to censor KKK.

What even is the FFN filter.

Thanks for the review

Jesus…sorry if you don’t like it. It’s kinda funny, though. I have this story published on two other sites, and no one’s ever said a thing. And have you SEEN half the stories on this site? I can’t believe you’re getting on to ME about format. So what if not everything flows together? This is only my second ever story. It’s all part of the learning process. And I’m sorry if I don’t happen to be a professional author, I’m only 16 for crying out loud. I know my story isn’t perfect- I never intended it to be- but there’s no need to come at me with some BS college essay about what all I’m doing “wrong”. Maybe you plan on being a professional writer someday, and if so, good for you. But I don’t, I just write for fun, to get my mind off other things. So, I hate to say it, and I mean no offense, but pretty much everything you just wrote doesn’t really mean anything to me.

secs ago[I have this story published on two other sites, and no one’s ever said a thing.]

That’s because reviewing is dead. There used to be a time when your story would have double-digit reviews by now. Few people have the courage to say anything, fewer still have the courage to say anything negative.

[And have you SEEN half the stories on this site? I can’t believe you’re getting on to ME about format.]

I assure you, I am by no means targetting you specifically.

[It’s all part of the learning process.]

Yes, exactly. Getting feedback is an essential part of the learning process. Even if you’re just doing this for fun, you seem to want to practice and improve, and I don’t see why you shouldn’t. Proper grammar will make your stories better, and it’s courteous to your readers. People will be less inclined to read your story if they have to decode your meaning every other line.

24m agoReviewing is dead? Whatever gave you that idea? I’ve gotten plenty of reviews on this story on other sites. And I only posted this one here DAYS ago. As for what I said about feedback, I didn’t mean I need a snob pointing out every grammatical mistake I make. I could care less about all that. The feedback I do like, if I have to get any, is things like how good the stoy ITSELF is, like if I have any plot holes or if there’s something I failed to explain. If grammar was a problem, somebody would have pointed that out in the year that I’ve had the story. Yes, not all chapters are up yet, solely because I haven’t taken the time to post them. I almost want to now, just to see what snobby response you’ll have for those.
secs agoIt’s not snobby to care about grammar. Proper grammar is the lowest possible bar to hold a story to. Grammar exists for a reason, and that reason is to facilitate understanding. It’s a courtesy to your reader. If you found my explanations unclear or frustrating, this thread explains things much better: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/21887406/1/Writing-Guide-Part-One-Grammar
14m agoIf you found my story hard to understand, I’m sorry, but that’s really not my problem. I didn’t write it for you. I wrote it for the people who ENJOY reading stories like this. Because that’s what reading is about, enjoying the story. At least, that’s what it is to me. Again, I don’t plan on majoring in literature, so if I’m not 100% up to your expectations, well, sue me. I really don’t give a damn.

Whenever a trainer calls their Pokémon by name, it’s always capitalized. Misty’s Togepi, for example, is called Togepi

Japanese does not have capital letters.

Here’s what I know, and honestly, this pretty much decides it. You wouldn’t capitalize animal or mouse or dragon, that’s true, but Pokémon are different than that. In the BOOKS and MINI NOVELIZATIONS that are OFFICIALLY published by the Pokémon Company International, a Pokémon’s name is ALWAYS CAPITALIZED. That’s just the way it is, and if you guys disagree with it, that’s fine – but on the subject of Pokémon, the Pokémon Company International are the experts. ;)

Jan 11, 2015 #5 Report

secs agoAnd what was the response to that?

The capitalization thread is an ongoing discussion. To pick a single argument as if it’s the final word is missing the point.

But congratulations, you finally went to the thread. Why don’t you actually contribute to that ongoing discussion instead of wasting your time with me.

1h agoWhat name is used for non magical people by the wizarding community in Harry Potter? Muggle. Capital M.
1h agoOh I saw this question and I almost scrolled over it with a sigh. Almost.

Proper nouns are names of people and places, such as Alex or Birmingham while the names of animals such dog or cat are known as common nouns.

You can see the different because of the capitalisation.

However pokemon are a collective species in the same way as mammals are.

Let’s use my favourite as an example. Gengar.

I have a gengar. His name is Gengar. He is a gengar, which a pokemon.

If you’re referring to the name of specific Pokemon, so the gengar with the name Gengar (“Go Gengar! I choose you!”) then it’s a proper noun. However if you’re looking to catch a gengar (“Hey Misty, I was killed by a group of ghosts which included a gengar”) then it’s a common noun.

Be nice if it was so cut and dry right?

Unfortunately, cursory research on GameFAQs suggests that there isn’t a standard. Usually it’s up to the users preference.

The Quora app keeps telling me the correct spelling of gengar is Gengar. And it’s not wrong. Language is truly beautiful. But;

An example;
I was looking at different types of mammals such as Humans and dogs.

Always remember the one rule of the English language.

There are no rules. Only guidelines.

1h agoI got that from Quora
1h agoSpecies names can go either way, like Tyrannosaurus rex or Tyrannosaurus Rex
1h agoUpon one’s death, they go either to Heaven or to Hell
secs agoI’m sick of doing this. Argue your points in the open or stop talking to me.

You’re in almost every Pokémon review section, aside from the ones written before 2011-ish or before. Might need to check more, but it’ll take ages to do that.

Wait, who pays attention to the category section? I understand… but I happen to use it rarely. Did you intend to make the story more visible when it’s indexed when someone is searching for the type of world, like games/manga? Would it matter to them?

I’m not going to banter on pointing out grammar errors. It’s pretty common here.

I’ve read that there is absolutely no standard for capitalization, and it’s up to the writer’s judgement on capitalization. There are four standards, #4 is most likely yours, according to the second URL I have listed, but some have created their own standard. Is #4 your opinion that you want others to follow like Cris Formage’s cult? People have different opinions, and I think you need to respect their words, like “Should X be executed?” or “Would Y win the game?”. Just simply ignore the capitalization things, and look at the grammar errors! They’re probably even worse than capitalization errors! Only published stories require appropriate capitalization, but your act makes me think you belong with a publishing company. Authors have varying styles of unique writing, some may be too unique for cable TV. Of course, there’s that terrible but common Its/It’s and TheirThereThey’re error many people notice. I don’t want myself drafted into the Capitalization Flame War for that.

I guess from your perspective, it means that pokémon (intentionally not capitalized, but in your perspective technically correct) are the only animal species living in the Pokémon World. Imagine those suckers existed in the real world, along with animals, let’s say, “Holy crap, I found a cute Larvitar/larvitar near West Coast Customs!”. Do they have to be capitalized like Apple owned them, or are they still generic like dragons?

Another question: is it logical to spell Mewtwo as “mewtwo” when that pokémon was made by scientists? Don’t bring up trading, because the games have unrealistic logic. I’m saying that because there can be only one trainer per save, and trainers from other saves can trade other pokémon (including Mewtwo). In reality, if one catches Mewtwo, then the whole “WHERE IS MEWTWO” story would end within two minutes, since only one Mewtwo is featured in the R/B/G/FR/LG. Please don’t bring up the anime, because apparently there are two of them.

-quora (dot) com /Are-the-names-of-Pok%C3%A9mon-proper-nouns
-pokecommunity (dot) com (slash) showthread(dot)php?t=241132 (This URL doesn’t want to bypass filters)

Both URLs link to unofficial responses, by the way.

Most would capitalize Pokémon species, because they are used to it in the games, and certain species are found in the US Trademark Office database (though I highly doubt the United States exists within Pokémon itself, even though Ash mentioned the Minnesota region). Yes, even the Trump administration capitalizes names of species themselves.

If I do write Pokémon with pokémon, I will be writing the species name with the first letter capitalized, to respect the people that made the series. I read Pokémon books before heading towards fanfics. There are so many writing standards that writers are still debating to this day, which irritates me, and maybe you.

The whole capitalization debate is like that one Democratic mayoral candidate ranting in my town newspaper every time, with the Republican side saying their rebuttal over and over again, even after that Democrat lost. Can’t wait to see him lose next November (2018).

If this entire piece of writing bothers you, the best thing to do is, well, respond, and maybe contact the Modern Language Association and have them set the standard for 90000+ Pokémon fics, with some predating (as early as 1999) those copypasta reviews, and some not featuring the species at all. Their aim is to “strengthen the study and teaching of language and literature” ), so could they be helpful? Maybe the people from Pokémon themselves could help, but they would most likely not respond to anything unrelated to the games, merch, etc.

Weird thing is that you’ve been in this site for many years, but you’re not a beta reader. Maybe beta reading would be better hobby, instead of typing public copypasta. There are people that have condemned you on Reddit, but I can’t seem to find the URL. What’s consuming your time? Maybe the copypasta is taking up your time. Don’t list anything personal. How, when and why did you start writing copypasta reviews?

If this is confusing to you, I’m going to (sorry for word choice) hate breaking down everything in detail. Especially when I mentioned Mewtwo, if that happens. Overall, you are an expert over-analyzing stories like the people that purchased Scrotie McBoogerballs, but you bring up the capitalization facts that people seem to debate still. Don’t link to the capitalization thread, because it’s completely like the Vietnam Flame War there, and I don’t think anyone would like to see that. Refer to an outside thread about grammar standards, because it is completely (sometimes almost, in one, but I forgot the URL) peaceful.

Also, many more things: whenever there’s something bad about a story, usually, when you leave a review, you seldom say anything positive, nor does the review look like anything positive. It could be mistaken as flame. I am aware of this, since you don’t use the “praise sandwich”. But you don’t seem to use any humor and/or sarcasm, so leave something for the author for their laugh, though be aware that there may be 10 year olds plaguing the site. Or simply flat out say one random positive fact with so-called “strong” words in the end like, “X is the only coherent character that can be tolerable to readers.”

I imagine Pokémon capitalization questions appearing on the next presidential debate.

Have a good day, and I am awaiting your response. It’s almost 4 in the morning, and I gotta go to sleep. ALMOST THREE HOURS OF WRITING.

PS 1: Has anyone ever mentioned the MLA or contacting Pokémon to you before?
PS 2: Have you ever favorite stories that you left a critical review on?
PS 3: Man in Motion?

secs ago…Do I know you?

You sound very interested in the capitalization debate. I’d prefer you do so in public where your views can contribute to the public consciousness. The thread for that is here: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/1/Capitalization-Thread

As someone who does most of his writing solely for himself, I’ve always wondered why the people like this and the guy above, who say things like this, post it to the internet. Who did you write it for that required posting it on the internet, if not people on the internet?
