The Other Pokeauthors, Part 67

Someone has a new argument for using SYOCs, but in the process seems to have misunderstood how SYOCs typically work. Otherwise, nothing much.

Arceus isn’t actually a minor player in this story. It’s just there to start the story off. There is only one Pokémon god. I’m not trying to be rude but if all you’re going to do is criticise then don’t read my story. I’m not going to change it because of minor things if it only bothers you.

I’m sorry that you don’t like my story but I don’t really care if you do or don’t either way.

You say it goes off of the anime world. Yeah maybe it does for now but that doesn’t matter. I’ve never read the manga or watched a lot of the anime so I wouldn’t know. Most of my knowledge of Pokémon came from the games I’ve played over the years.

And can I just point out that this is a fanfiction. It doesn’t have to be classified under anything because it is my story idea with it’s own plot.

You don’t have to do anything, but people would appreciate it if you made searches a little easier. But if the story genuinely does blend canons, it’s fine.

[I’m not going to change it because of minor things if it only bothers you.]

I never expected you to. But I will still say my opinion. That is the purpose of the review feature.

[There is only one Pokémon god.]

Uh… Groudon and Kyogre ring a bell? Dialga and Palkia? Ho-oh and Lugia? Arceus has very impressive feats attributed to it, but it’s not the only pokemon with god-like powers. A few of the other gods have chosen ones (or at least prophecies associated with them), but Arceus either does nothing while the world is being destroyed literally right under its nose (if you’re using game canon) or actively hates humanity at this point in time (if you’re using anime canon). If you have a specific reason to use Arceus then by all means, but you should be aware that it’s become really overplayed by now.

16m agoI know that. I’ve read plenty of stories that use such things. Arceus is known as the original one.

The creation trio were made by Arceus to rule over space, time and… It think the last is dimensions but I’m not sure.

I was wondering if there was anything that you’d like to see in the story during later chapters. Would you like to see any specific Pokémon? Oh yeah. Earlier you said that I shouldn’t capitalize the word Pokémon. I just realised that it autocorrects to it whenever I type it.

secs ago[I just realised that it autocorrects to it whenever I type it.]

That’s easily fixed if you edit your autocorrect.

[Arceus is known as the original one.]

In one specific religion in one specific region that is not mentioned anywhere despite said region being the single best resource on mythology in canon, yes. Just because something is a creator god doesn’t mean anyone cares; the creator gods were the villains of the Greek mythos, remember. Arceus definitely wouldn’t have my vote. Thing is a lazy dick, couldn’t even create a universe without outsourcing the labor to its kids.

If you want to argue this further, I’d like to request you do it in the thread: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/162324520/1/Pokeworld-Religion

2m agoI found that out on a website called Bulbapedia. Just search Arceus and it pops up. I agree that it is a lazy dick. I wasn’t arguing to begin with. I was discussing it.

Guess there’s nothing you’d like to see then. No pairing you’d prefer?

secs agoI have no interest in pairings, sorry.
9h agoIt’s fine. Any Pokémon that you’d like to see?
secs agoThe pokemon you include should be ones that are relevant to the story, not what strangers think are cool.
Thanks for the tips.

Mind giving me an example for future reference?

secs agoIf you’re talking about the comma splices, your very second sentence is one:

[For a detective, it means that they always end up seeing a side that people often ignore, follow the cases of a Pokemon Detective.]

“Follow the cases of a pokemon detective” is a completely separate thought from “For a detective, it means that they always end up seeing a side that people often ignore.” The second comma should be a period here.

If you want a specific resources, the website Grammar Girl may be useful. I know there are many other online resources, but I don’t know names.

6h agoThank you very much for the help though. I really appreciate any tip. I think is obvious English is not my main language.

Thanks!

Hm- to me it was pretty clear what happened, which is that a shipment of pokeballs that were being transferred was delayed, and those pokeballs contain the OCs. (It’s still a problem if my readers don’t get it, but how? Was it too vague in general?)

Anyway, with the bigger issue my thought process was to throw myself into writing, since I usually deliberate for hours with my own characters and they end up slotting too neatly into the world around them. By asking for OCs that have enough wiggle room in their characters (the constrained form), that I can interpret their history and personality as necessary to fit while also being interesting, or a writing perspective I don’t usually have. So I don’t think I’ll find many characters bad or unusable, since I can pad submissions that would be mary sues (if the submitter could get away with such a thing) with traits that would make them fit. (The plot is more set pieces that the characters can encounter rather than overarching- since some interactions create plots, and so I can throw whatever characters into scenarios that will be interesting rather than ones that would give half the group the same thought process).

…which does make the setting generic, yeah. If the problem is that you need more information about the plot-that-depends-on-the-characters to create the characters, I don’t think I can provide that. Either way though, I’m more of asking for interpretable character prompts rather than full-fledged characters… which is why Chara, who’s a complete character, doesn’t have any wiggle room in how I can interpret them so they’d be workable with the other characters. If you still want to submit someone, use the form!

secs ago[Hm- to me it was pretty clear what happened, which is that a shipment of pokeballs that were being transferred was delayed, and those pokeballs contain the OCs.]

No, that isn’t clear. Regardless, that’s not the point of what I said. What is the PLOT? What is the story going to be ABOUT? What are its THEMES? Are there group or setting dynamics we can play off of? Those are the important questions we need to make characters. There’s no point in submitting a character if the story is never going to engage with their most interesting traits.

If you want wiggle room, SYOC is the wrong way to go about it. Most people who submit to SYOCs expect you to portray their exact character perfectly. It sounds like what you want is general character inspiration, in which case you should be looking to this thread: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/128021680/1/Character-Bio-Thread

Regardless, your character form is so general that you could have used a random generator. You made personality optional? Seriously? You can’t practice art by making other people do the sketches.

9h agoAn actual SYOC does sound like it’d crash and burn, with the sheer amount of characters that must behave to their own complex sets of rules.

[You can’t practice art by making other people do the sketches.]

There’s still something to learn by filling them in. Character forms have at least some semblance of logic by their creators, while RNGs result in more things that are self-contradictory and just won’t work.

And the same reason I don’t want to use complete characters as my previous message.

So in my eyes it’s submissions rng, and I don’t want to use full characters.

St Elmo’s Fire,

Story: At the End of Everything
Chapter: 1. Chapter 1

Anthony:This story is hilarious, interesting, original, touching, and unique. Haha just kidding.

This was the weird story I wrote to work out some of the feelings I had about I Miss the Sunrise. I honestly don’t know if this is a bot or a real person.

For some reason, all the text in this post is appearing as white for me, and it’s impossible to read normally.

(The plot is more set pieces that the characters can encounter rather than overarching- since some interactions create plots, and so I can throw whatever characters into scenarios that will be interesting rather than ones that would give half the group the same thought process).

People really need to rediscover the magic of pen and paper role-playing games.

    …That’s a bad thing now?
