Thank for the submission. The personality traits are a bit interesting for a hero. Can you elaborate a bit more? I don’t want to get the character wrong or anything.

Jun 16That’s all I have from my master copy. I don’t think there’s much more to be said about them. Do you have any specific questions?I’m not going to hunt you down if you write them a little OOC. In fact, that’s the fun of these things, isn’t it? If you need a guideline, they’re sort of a tongue-in-cheek reference to the behavior of RPG players — obsessed with power through killing to the exclusion of all else.

Jun 16Okay. Well, I do like the idea of this character. I apperciate the reference, though RPG games are not really my style so IDK much about them. I do want give her a bit of a sad backstory. As the series progresses, everyone will get character development. I do just have one question: How do you want Kara to interact with the team at first?

Jun 16[though RPG games are not really my style]

…Says the person writing Pokemon fanfic? o_O

[I do want give her a bit of a sad backstory.]

Would you like me to provide you with something, or do you want to come up with that on your own?

[How do you want Kara to interact with the team at first?]

I don’t know what the rest of the team is like, so I can’t answer that question. That seems like something you’ll have to determine yourself. All I can say is that they’re generally pretty cold and standoffish, as stated in their bio. They are probably using the team for some ulterior motive, and their behavior towards them will probably reflect that.

Jun 16Okay, the RPG games thing was oxymoronic as hell.
As for backstory, I feel like since it is your character you should come up with it.
The other characters are as followed:
Jared (Red): Kindhearted but knows when to stand his ground. Doesn’t like to see others hurt.
Adam(Blue): Bit of a geek, kind but a bit rough around the edges.
Kay(Pink): A musician with talent on the guitar. Daughter of a rich business mogul, but she doesn’t like the way her father has basically sold his sold in his work and hasn’t talked to him years.
There is no green yet and if I don’t get a submission for one I’ll make one.
Jun 16Update: I now have a Green. His name is Moses and he’s quiet, compassionate, and easily amused.

Jun 16[As for backstory, I feel like since it is your character you should come up with it.]

I mean they don’t have a tragic backstory. You could spin their misanthropy as stemming from some kind of abuse or other trauma, but I don’t have anything specific planned. They’re mainly just a horrible person — and I consider it very important not to try to excuse that by saying “well they may be a mass murderer, but their parents beat them so it’s totally okay!”

I don’t see anything in the team that would make them behave differently than default. Humans are, for the most part, interchangeable to them: they are all but lambs to the slaughter.

Jun 16I’m thinking of something like maybe guilt to save someone she cared for like maybe the person that gave her that locket. I’ll definitely set aside a two part chapter that will help establish her character a bit more. I’ll make sure to work on her personality through interactions with the villains as well as her fellow rangers.

They really do not take the hint. Going by the story (which contains the line “Kara was about to argue, but she thought about what Jared was saying. He was right.”), I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t reading my replies at all.

what do you mean by that, can you tell me what wong with it

Jun 17It’s completely incoherent. I could not understand it. You didn’t end sentences with punctuation, and you dropped spaces everywhere, making everything run together into an incomprehensible mess. Are you not a native speaker?
Jun 17sorry i wrote this a while ago forgot about it then finished it.I forgot to check it over so it had errors and yes I am a native speaker

Thank you very much for the review! As I mentioned, this started as mostly writing practice, so getting critical feedback like this is super helpful!

Some things you mentioned, such as Amos turning on Disc, is actually planning on being addressed in the future!

But again, thank you very much! This is all very helpful!

Thanks for the advice! I’ll make sure to take it into consideration. As for the capitalization of Pokemon, I just feel like it is a proper noun since it is the name of a species. Kind of like capitalizing Cheetah.(I’ll make sure to edit the dialogue.)

Thanks again!

Jun 18[Kind of like capitalizing Cheetah.]

You… don’t do that, though, as outlined at the start of the paragraph. Species names aren’t capitalized. Other orders of classification are, but not species.

Jun 18Yeah, alright. I was just trying to justify capitalizing Pokemon. I just don’t feel comfortable not capitalizing it. Maybe I’ll try not capitalizing it in the future.

Been a while since I wrote anything,
Next chapter will be better
Jun 18Please check out the new version and check if you have enough time the next chapter’s coming soon.
:)))))))))))))))))))
Jun 18Have you fixed the old errors I pointed out?
Jun 18yep ,atleast I think so

They actually did, or at least some of them. The story was still incomprehensible.

Thanks for the criticism. But this isn’t the first chapter. This is the prologue. When the first real chapter comes out it will be in a completely different style and definitely wont be centered.

Jun 19You deleted the story… Is this the one with, like, three sentences of story? That’s not a prologue. A prologue is a self-contained story that takes place before the main plot. What you gave was a summary, like a back-of-the-book blurb.
Jun 19Agreed there, made a mistake. The reason I deleted the story was that specific reason. But for some reasons it keeps centering my text. I’m a little bit of a noob to this site. Any advice you can give will be perfect.

…The last thing I expect from a review was a grammer lesson, but thanks!

The main reason why I capitalize the word “Pokemon” is because – if I don’t – the red lines underneath will bother the hell out of me endlessly, even after I post it. The correct dictionary term for “Pokemon” hsa the “P” capitalized, and for the Pokemon themselves, the names are just that: names, and I feel like they should be capitalized accordingly.

As for the dialogue, I’ve been taught the formatting of it in so many different ways, I’ve grown to not care anymore. I’m not the best writer, and I’m just trying to write a story here, not a full essay. Still, I’ll try an take the criticism and integrate it later. Thanks.

Jun 19[The main reason why I capitalize the word “Pokemon” is because – if I don’t – the red lines underneath will bother the hell out of me endlessly]

You can add it to the dictionary, if that’s the issue.

[I’ve been taught the formatting of it in so many different ways]

That’s surprising, actually. It’s not taught often. Did you learn it in school?

Jun 19Meh. I could.

Waaaaaaaay back in 1st grade and – for some reason – twice in SAT practice. Dunno why the instructors wanted to review something like that, since all they did was add to my confusion.

I really do appreciate the feedback! See when I was writing it I figured I would have a bunch of mistakes as I didn’t have a beta yet. As well as I am aware it was horribly generic and overdone, the plot for this story will be intricate and odd so perhaps a different start might very well be what is needed.

In most of the stories I’ve read, at least one Pokemon was never named before the trainer named them.

I always put commas after quotes that have a descriptor.

Jun 12[In most of the stories I’ve read, at least one Pokemon was never named before the trainer named them.]

Yes, and in those cases it also doesn’t make sense. Think about it. You’re portraying this zorua as having human-level intelligence and the capacity for language. Why wouldn’t it already have a name?

Choosing someone else’s name for them also just carries… disturbing implications. This post explains it in better detail: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/3/Capitalization-Thread#151597458

[I always put commas after quotes that have a descriptor.]

I’m not sure what you’re referring to here. Do you mean the sentence I pointed out? You don’t have to put a comma at the end of dialogue if you already have punctuation, for the same reason you wouldn’t end a normal sentence in !.

Jun 12In the story, although not explained very clearly, tells you that Leo has a necklace that enabled Leo to talk to Pokemon.

I know that Zorua are considered a “Tricky Fox Pokemon” and I assumed Zorua to be intelligent.

I’m a new writer, but it may very well be the case that I was portraying the Zorua to have human intelligence.

Choosing names for Pokemon happen all the time in the games. I don’t get what point you were trying to get across with the link you sent me.

Jun 12[In the story, although not explained very clearly, tells you that Leo has a necklace that enabled Leo to talk to Pokemon.]

So… the necklace is a translator, yes? It’s not giving the zorua the capacity for language, the zorua was always intelligent and always had a language, she just needed a translator to be understood by humans. Why wouldn’t an intelligent language-having creature have its own name?

[I don’t get what point you were trying to get across with the link you sent me.]

Argh, it referred to the wrong post. FFN is really annoying. Okay, just read from the top of this: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/11834/55376155/3/Capitalization-Thread

The relevant section is:

[Here’s a minor example. Over NaRe this January, I ran into a couple fics of talking pokemon, where, as usual, there was this scene:

“I pick Starter!”

“Yay!”

“I’ll nickname you Firsty.”

“Okay!”/”No, I want a different name.” “How about Secondy?” “Okay!”

And I said to the author, why doesn’t the trainer just ask this talking pokemon what their name is?

And I got back these incredibly long justifications for why pokemon just don’t have names, okay, but at the same time are totally 110% in favor of going by a name as soon as a human decides on one. They didn’t make sense, they were convoluted and impossible to explain in the fic, they relied on the idea talking cooperative pokemon not only act nothing like humans but also nothing like all the other social animals we’ve found who use language to give their kids name…

This isn’t even getting into the major issue of them pointing at another person and saying that’s going to be their partner without the pokemon having any say. Just the idea of a trainer saying, “So what’s your name?” as opposed to “I hereby name you…”, when the author could still have the pokemon just give whatever name the author had wanted, was unacceptable. They weren’t willing to give even that up.

And it’s all the worse if you’re familiar with, well, how that’s kind of exactly what we did to people the last time we owned them. It’s not how we treat our respected equals. It’s Robinson Crusoe, three centuries back:

In a little time I began to speak to him; and teach him to speak to me: and first, I let him know his name should be Friday, which was the day I saved his life: I called him so for the memory of the time. I likewise taught him to say Master; and then let him know that was to be my name]

Your character is literally doing the exact same thing SLAVEMASTERS did to their SLAVES. Do you see how that’s more than a little disturbing, especially since you reinforce it by having her call him “master”? Why is it okay for him to have this much power over a thinking, feeling person?

Jun 12Layla the Zorua was suggested several names and refused the other names. If she already had a name, I would have already had here tell Leo that fact. Layla would have also told Leo if she wanted a specific name. Layla was given options and a name was not forced on her. She decided herself that she liked the name that Leo suggested.I get what you point is, however I don’t believe that Layla never had a choice.

Jun 13Okay, but you chose to have it play out that way. Why did you purposefully choose for her to not have a name so Leo could give her one? I get that, in the context of the story, she doesn’t have a name and it makes sense that Leo would have to give her one, but why is it that way? Why didn’t you have him ask “What’s your name?” and have her answer “Layla”?
Jun 19Because I’m new and didn’t think of that.

Holy shit, Soft Chara is a memetic virus!

    And you are a carrier.

    1. Mini-Farla says:

Sadly, I fear it’s more that changing the name to “Kara” made the author see them as a girl, and as we all know girls aren’t actually dangerous and can be converted to the side of Good with calm rational manly man logic.

I have since changed the name again to something more gender neutral. Let’s hope this is the last time.

…Someone seriously named their kid Justice? Enough times to become a statistic?

I guess if you go by the logic that it’s in the Bible…

Either way, a good name for Chara.

        2. Mini-Farla says:

As much as I love “Justice” it’s far too suspicious, but Riley may be of use.

Just curious, is dialogue not commonly being taught a public school problem? Or is it not usually taught anywhere? Actually, this subject gets more confusing to me. I’ve taken college classes where over half the class did not know what an adjective was. Is English just poorly taught? Do people not pay attention?

Other than that… Chara’s not being easy to write due to representing the common way people play video games brings up an interesting subject. It’s curious how certain stories can work so much better in one medium than another (say, video games to books). Sorry if there is a better place to post this, but do you all cover topics like that? Farla’s forum on FFN is kind of like that, but a bit more narrowed.

Wish I could convince myself to get more involved in all this, but keep getting distracted. Always fun to see what’s up here though.

    1. Mini-Farla says:

Just curious, is dialogue not commonly being taught a public school problem? Or is it not usually taught anywhere?

Well, I only have a sample size of my own schools, but no, we did not learn dialogue. Admittedly it is a niche thing, and my high school creative writing class did cover it, just not in much detail (it focused more on content than formatting). I’ve heard that English class is generally taught quite poorly, but I thought my classes were alright. I think the problem is more that they focus too much on analysis, which high schoolers literally do not have the brain capacity to do, and that just makes everyone hate English class and assume everything in it is arbitrary, lies, and/or a waste of time. That would explain why so many people are willing to argue to the death that grammar is just an arbitrary style and doesn’t mean anything.

Honestly, I figure Chara should be easy to write, since you know better than anyone how you play video games? Of course, if you don’t get that that’s what Chara is, they’ll probably be hard, but they’re still ultimately a pretty simple character. I think it’s more that people are assuming I want them to be a fully fleshed-out character who gets to participate in fun friendship adventures when I’m totally fine with them being a background character. Part of this is teaching SYOC authors that they need to be clearer about what they want.

If you want to talk more about this, the Undertale discussion post might be good? I doubt anyone would mind if you started a topic in Complain About Farla either, it’s been pretty quiet lately.

      1. Childish says:

Now that you mention it, I don’t recall how in depth my writing classes went on dialogue. I just know it was covered, and I’ve never had much trouble outside more vague areas… Guess disliking English is not too surprising though. Before essays became the norm, English was probably the most monotonous of all school activities.

I see your point on Chara. I was a bit distracted by the concept I’d somehow connected with it. Think I’ll follow your suggestion of making a post on the Complain about Farla forum.
