The Other Pokeauthors, Part 98

“It’s amazing that you don’t know anything about writing.” Responses are otherwise appreciative, however.

This was for an old review, out of the blue:

1) This story has a mix of both anime and game plot. By the end, it will fit more under the game world than anime world.

2) I am literally an abuse survivor, and this story is about character growth and learning how real people react to real situations.

Get the fuck away from my story.

secs agoYou can block me by using the “block users” function under “Account” in the sidebar if you don’t want further reviews.

Is there a particular reason why you chose to respond now?

2m agoI only just came back to this account as I have mostly moved to AO3, but I was looking into moving my stories or perhaps finishing the ones I still have here.
secs agoAh, okay.

In the future, please be aware that FFN and AO3 are public websites with public comment features; the default assumption is that comments are allowed. If you don’t want people commenting or criticizing the story, you should make a note of that. AO3 gives an option to moderate comments as well, which may be helpful.

13m agoI don’t mind people commenting and reviewing. Being assholes is a different matter.
1m agoWhat I said was reasonable criticism. I didn’t say what I said out of snobbery. If you are trying to make a meaningful statement about living with abuse and how people react to it, you have even more responsibility to be careful about what you write. I object to your portrayal of abuse because it plays into dangerous cultural narratives that are often used to discredit abuse victims. I stand by what I said: abusers are really good at tricking people. They very rarely trigger gut feelings in people who aren’t skilled at looking for red flags. This is important, because we are TOLD that abusers are obviously evil and everyone can recognize it; so when people inevitably can’t immediately tell that something is horribly wrong, they’re more likely to think nothing is wrong.

I understand that from the inside, it can *feel* like the abuse is obvious and it’s incomprehensible that other people can’t see, but abusers are good at manipulating those feelings to protect themselves. If you are writing this to work through your own feelings or your own abuse, that is fair, but you should be aware that this is a complex topic with many competing views. If your work gets wide exposure, my comments are the kinds of things you will need to expect.

secs ago(Moreover, your intentions would be clearer if you state them explicitly in an author’s note, unless you are uncomfortable with revealing your status as a survivor.)

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated.

I was mainly testing the waters here, as while I have a lot of ideas, the exceution always seems to fall short. I feel like eventually, I’ll get it right.

Thanks so much for the in-depth critique. I’ll go through and correct the issues you pointed out.

I don’t write anymore. I don’t care about any mistakes, I just posted it to post it because me and some mates were fuckin around in discord. No need to take everything so serious
6h agoThough if my friend does take over the account like this summer, I’ll let him know to take your advice
6h agoLast thing because I’m stupid and think of stuff over time and not in one, I originally deleted the chapter thing I talked about in the one western story due to hardly any people looking at it (however many that was) and no reviews/follows, etc. no point in keeping it up though it’s up now as you left a hefty review on it.

But it’s all good and dandy, you’re just doin your job. No hard feelings since I don’t think you knew I’m not writing anymore. All the fun sorta just got sucked out of it

[I don’t mind people commenting and reviewing. Being assholes is a different matter.]

…and then proceeds to claim that you have no knowledge about writing even though you actually have some stories on your account, you take part in a grammar thread, AND that you’ve been reviewing for several years.

I always find statements like these ironic. It’s like “You’re not allowed to say bad things about me, but I can insult you back if you say anything I disagree with.”

On a side note, I’ve noticed an increase in reviews warning others to block you, Farla and Talarc. In fact, one author has begun reviewing your own reviews.

    1. St. Elmo's Fire says:

Oh yes, they did the same thing a few weeks ago and burned out after a few days. I’m curious to see how long they will last this time.

      1. Roc says:

Goodness, I honestly can’t imagine how you manage to immune yourself to all the insults and death threats. At this point, I’m starting to wonder if people on FFN actually know what a troll or cyberbully is. (And considering what they say to you… irony!~)

Out of curiosity, have you ever taken the time to make sure the grammar rules you state are completely up to date so that people won’t throw the “Rules are outdated!” argument at you?

        1. Act says:

Written grammar rules change so slowly I’d be shocked if that were necessary, especially the big points of contention like punctuation and capitalization. I’ve yet to see someone argue that ‘whom’ is outdated prescriptivism or that they’re trying to code-mesh. For some reason it’s the most objective stuff people flip about. People are weird.

Speaking of capitalization, Mr. Act found an interesting article a while aho about why English differs from other germanics in not capitalizing all nouns and I forgot to share it! I’ll have to dig it up again.

        2. Farla says:

I’m starting to wonder if people on FFN actually know what a troll or cyberbully is

They sorta do! Bullies are evil, therefore anything and everything must be allowed in response, so if you feel like doing anything or everything to somebody, you need to find a bully first.

      2. Talarc says:

At least the anti-spam filter has forced them to say more about the story before they issue their warning this time. Maybe I’m speaking too soon, but it’s already starting to look like they’re running out of steam.

        Edit: Yeah, spoke too soon.

Interestingly, I haven’t been receiving anywhere near as many author responses to my reviews over the last month as you have. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not…

        1. Farla says:

I’m suspicious the drama is scaring people into thinking any response will be taken to mean they’re on one side or the other.

That’s assuming no one’s actively harassing authors who say they don’t mind our reviews, which is sadly not an assumption I can be sure of.

          1. Talarc says:

Depressing. I feel sorry the authors whose review sections are getting filled with their scaremongering.
