EverLasting

Some of you may remember Farla’s review of the game Lasting and perhaps my own comments where I described a peculiar glitch I’ve encounter.Since then, I’ve played the game many more times, returning to it every few days. It takes only a couple of minutes for me to find a glitch now that I know what I’m looking for. The game changes doors’ “locked” property sometimes, and when a previously locked door gets unlocked, sometimes nothing is created beyond that, allowing the player to escape the confines of the game.

Basically, all you need is to find a closed door and click on it until it unlocks or until you die, at which point you should start anew.

While the game itself is very atmospheric and intense if pretty simple, I find the glitch more interesting and worthy of exploring.

Not a single object can be found there.

Dresden Files RPG, by Evil Hat Productions, Part 1 (Presentation, Introduction, Basics)

Just look at his face, so silly

OK, so, a proper review of Dresden Files RPG. The game is set right before the book Changes, so there are going to be some spoilers, mostly concerning supernatural creatures, metaphysical concepts and such rather than specific events and characters as I would try to avoid talking about them.

For all the three of you who care, you’ve been warned.

The City (A Setting for A Penny for My Thoughts)

(A bit of self-indulgence here. Simple homebrew setting for a game I reviewed here.)While Mnemosyne helps to break down the barriers between your mind and the minds of your fellow patients, it also weakens the barriers between the compartments of your mind. Memories, dreams, books, graffiti – all of these can mix together. To help you distinguish fact from fiction, we have prepared this guide to the world you live in. You may treat the following statements about the world as true:

Dresden Files RPG – Our World, Introduction Story (TRPG)

Since Farla is summoned once again from her home dimension and is doing another DF book, I thought I would look at Dresden Files RPG. More informative posts (the game is huge compared to the ones I normally talk about, so there probably would be more than a single review) will be soon-ish, but for now I have some things to say about the introduction short story provided for the second volume of RPG by Butcher himself.

Relying on Unreliable Narrator to Wave Away Problems Doesn’t Work. Reliably.

So, being active in a fandom I won’t name but that’s totally Harry Potter as well as criticizing various other work like Hunger Games, Name of the Wind, Twilight and such, I’ve noticed a peculiar thing: fans of said work would defend them by citing unreliable narrator. Why is a character hated by the narrative for no good reason? The narrator just has a bias against them due to personal reasons. Why show contradicts tell? The narrator is unreliable and tries to make themselves look better/worse because of reasons. Why killing these guys is a good thing, again? It isn’t, Katniss just rationalize it as a defense mechanism.

This argument is really annoying because countering it is not even so much difficult as tedious since it involves combing the text to demonstrate that, no, really, the narrative agrees with the narrator, we aren’t meant to question it.

So I think it calls for a talk about what unreliable narrator is and how it should be used.
