I don’t think there’s really any review for this. Whether or not it’s a good game, or really a game at all, is kind of irrelevant. It exists and you’re either playing it or you’re not.
I’m here for my mandatory complaint about the looks.

Here’s what I saw when I started the game. It’s almost fine except for that godawful hip, but such is the price of having female characters, is it not?
Well…googling for that image also hit a bunch of images from the hype period before the game was finalized. Here’s what it used to look like:

So here’s another reminder that this doesn’t just happen – when it happens differently, marketing fixes it for you.
First time I heard of this game. Now that I know what it is, I am mildly terrified. Pretty sure that’s how the matrix was created.
(though wikipedia tells me it’s good for depression and anxiety and stuff?)
Also, what’s the weird white/orange blob near the boy’s waist in the old image supposed to be? It looks like they drew him with his dick out and then censored it.
This game is everything and i will entertain no argument to the contrary.
…but yes, the hip. Reminded me of Hawke from DA2. It actually makes me feel better it was originally different though, for some reason.
Maybe because it shows that sometimes actual creators do try to do better?
But mild positives! When you get to level 5 and have to choose your team affiliation, two of the three team leaders are women! You can’t see how (im)practical their outfits are because they’re all silhouettes, and they come up literally never again because the game constantly crashes, but it’s a start…?
Oh, and the two women are the “brains, strategy, and analysis” and “brawn over brains!!!1!” team leaders, while the man is the “follow your heart and feelings~~~” team!
I noticed that! It was awesome.
I think that’s why seeing that the original concept art was normal makes me feel better; it seems like the dev was well-intentioned and Creepy Marketing Guy struck later in the process. We all know about CMG, he’s everywhere, but that it seems it wasn’t *also* the dev team means there are net fewer terrible people than if it were a bad design all along.
Let’s blame Takeuchi.
Well, she’s not blonde, so0o0o0o…
I suppose it depends on wording, but couldn’t that also be sexist because it implies men are animals and women have to be the smart ones?
Are you actually trying to argue there’s an institutional bias against men as scientists? Because I would like to see this argument, as it would be a complete disaster.
Nope, I was just curious would the reverse be as bad, and figure I’d ask, even if my thoughts were wrong.
On another note, we finally get to join the Teams and be villains, which sounds cool.
Okay, but why would subverting a sexist trope be “as bad” as the trope? There’s a logic gap here somewhere that I find a bit concerning.
That the idea of men being outnumbered 2 to 1 in one specific instance has you looking for ~reverse sexism~ or w/e says nasty things about our expectations for male as default. Women are never cast as scientists because sexism + a single game actually casts more women as scientists than men =/= matriarchy.
I see. I am sorry for what I said then. I will do better next time.
It’s all good, ty.
I’ll admit, my only thought when I saw the avatar choices was “I get to wear actual clothes that a person could move in!” I think this is the definition of either “inured” or “jaded.” *sigh*
Playing adds a layer of bearability to slogging around in the Phoenix heat, which I’ve got to do anyway. There’s this new urbanist/city planning thing that posits people find an environment more “walkable” if we can see intermediate destinations in short bits. That’s never worked well here, where we have long blocks and deep parking lots… until Pokémon GO provided the intermediate destinations with pokéstops and intermittent monsters, as well as a layer of “I’m not just tromping the same dratted half-mile I do every afternoon, I’m hatching an egg.”
So far, I haven’t joined one of the big play nights at a public spot, but I need to do that this week as part of the full experience.
two out of three leaders are female though!
Hips of the female model are bad indeed but the game is awesome. We even liked it so much that we’re actually using it in a marketing campaign to reduce the litter on the London streets.
One thing I liked about the game was that, when choosing your character’s gender, you were asked “Which look do you like better” instead of “Are you a boy or a girl?”
