Telepath Tactics (Guest Review)

Telepath Tactics is the latest entry in the Telepath RPG series, and is markedly different than its predecessors. It ditches the vector graphics and awkward birds-eye camera angle for more a more traditional 3/4th view and pixellated style, and streamlines the experience into a linear series of battles like Fire Emblem rather than a free-exploration RPG. I believe that the latter change makes it a better game, but at the same time drastically hinders its storytelling ability. (more…)

It’s a Mad, Mad Max World

So, Mad Max: Fury Road seems to have been a hit. I’m very surprised – I’m a big fan of the original trilogy (well, more of the two first movies, but even the third one has its moments), but I didn’t think a new movie over thirty years later would be so well-accepted by the audience of 2015. Of course, the joke’s on me: I had forgotten how the original movies had also been surprise hits (again, at least the first two).

Chronicles of Prydain

The Mabinogion is a collection of several prose stories which were found in medieval Welsh manuscripts (written sometime around the 12th-13th centuries), but were actually based on an older oral tradition (although we’re still discussing exactly how old). It was first fully translated into English by Lady Charlotte Guest, scholar of Welsh language and literature, in the 19th century. Besides just being a very good read, this book would prove very influential in literary studies about the Arthurian mythos – and (more relevantly for this post) would also inspire the fantasy series The Chronicles of Prydain, written by American author Lloyd Alexander during the sixties (the first book was written in 1964, the fifth and last one in 1968).

WTH Moments: “Thor – God of Thunder” for the Nintendo DS

I’m a huge fan of Thor, Marvel’s comic book series. Oh, you might think it’s just because I’m a Vikingophile, but no, actually; what got me hooked was Walt Simonson’s amazing run writing (and also drawing, at first) for the character, from Thor #337 (1977) to #382 (1986). He basically reinvented the character, and he did it not by discarding everything that had been done before him, but simply by changing the focus of the series – Thor still acted as a traditional super-hero, but now his stories dealt a lot more with Asgard and fantasy-mythical elements based off real-life Norse mythology. The character had other great writers – Tom DeFalco’s run comes to mind -, but Simonson is my favourite to this day.

Webcomics Recs

Hey everyone!

There’s a yearly webcomics battle going on right now. There’s too many to read all at once, so the best option is to just read whatever’s opposite something you want to vote for. (It requires facebook to vote but doesn’t seem to care how old the account is, so if that’s an issue you can easily make a dummy account. Or, if your favorite webcomic is losing, a few dozen.)

Anyway, since that’s on we’re going to have a recs post now. Webcomics are free in every way except time, so these range from those I absolutely love to those I found enjoyable enough.
