Dreaming Mary

I really enjoyed Dreaming Mary. It’s really well put together, the dialogue and voices are simply incredible, and it has multiple endings that aren’t a chore to get and make sense rather than seeming like they’re just there because it’s custom. Play it with the sound all the way up! You need to hear what’s said.

Look at how pretty everything is! Go play it. Go play it now. Go! Now.

Heroes of Might & Magic III, Part One – Guest review

As I stated previously, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 was actually the first one I played – my sister played the older ones when I was younger, but I didn’t play them myself until I decided to do this review series. Unlike the previous games, I was actually able to play it (mostly) to completion, including both expansion packs. It probably colored some of my expectations for the series; when I revisited the others, I couldn’t help but compare them to what I saw in this game. So then, how does it actually hold up?

Heroes of Might and Magic II, Part One – Guest Review

The second game in the series. Unfortunately, it seems like the canonical victor of the four-way war in the first game was Boring McBoringson I mean Morglin Ironfist. It turns out that not only did he ravage the new land he found himself in for his own personal glory, he also left it with a succession crisis when he finally had the decency to die of boringness.

The Reconstruction Part 1 (Guest Review)

The Reconstruction is an RPG made in RPG Maker XP. When it was released in 2009, I absolutely adored it. It is still probably among my favorite games of all time, and is definitely one of the best RPG Maker games I have ever seen. It has since spawned both a prequel and a sequel, both similarly excellent in my opinion.

It’s not without its flaws, though, and I think it would be a pertinent exercise to look back and see how well the nostalgia holds up. This won’t be a single-post review, but a long series spanning the entire game, much like Farla’s reviews of the Pokemon games. Unfortunately, since I’ve already played it, I can’t do a running commentary. I can’t exactly do a retrospective nostalgia trip either, since I doubt most of the readers are familiar with the material, in which case I think spoiler-free is the best policy. As such, my own comments will probably be limited, but we’ll see how things go.

(Post-Completion Addendum: I was really bad at following through with this, and this will probably make no sense if you haven’t played the game yourself. I would advise reading my review of the prequel first if you’re skimming, as that one is more self-contained.)

Also: It is freeware, and can be downloaded here if you’d like to follow along. (more…)

Exalted tutorial/story + Starter pick + Next Time On

Let’s end this on a happier note!

This is the most adorable and best written tutorial to ever exist. It’s intended to (try to) introduce people to the infernal workings of Exalted’s combat system, but it’s done so well it’s worth a play for the story too.

Now, about the voting. It bugs me that I’m starting new series faster than I’m finishing old ones, so to address that, next poll will be just sequels. Your desire for me to start on yet another series in Daughter of Smoke and Bone has been noted. Let’s see about getting the existing stuff done.

Animorphs – a hella lot
Beautiful Creatures – 3 more books.
Chemical Garden – 1 more book
Eona – 1 more book
Gemma Doyle – 2 more books
Graceling sorta series – 2 more books
Matched – 1 more book
Unwind – 3 more books.

Exalted novel is also on the list because it’s definitely a thing that’ll happen.

Tomorrow (or the next) pokemon posting! In the meantime, you may make your case for which starter I should pick. Act quickly, you have until I finish transcribing the opening to that point.
